Bob usually states this in all of his videos referring to this subject matter. There is a new handheld like every 3-4 months. There will never be a "great" time to buy one because the next best thing is always right around the corner. Similar to building a gaming PC. Find one that suits your needs and don't look back.

I'm with ya on that sentiment. Anbernic RG35X was as good as Bob said for beginners but it's not a high end product. Waiting on the actual high end handheld that is pocketable, meaning that'd be considerably smaller than a Switch or Steam Deck.

Okay... I just bought this thing about 2 weeks ago. And I gotta say my dude is wrong about a couple things... Of course these also might have been changes Retroid has made to the product over time but either way... The M1 and M2 buttons are definitely mappable to home and back. I have mine set this way and it comes with its own settings to do this. Next the screen doesn't go back far enough he said... This is technically true... But that's because there are 2 tiny plastic stops on the back. I took a tiny file or some light 400 grit sandpaper and sanded those stops like a millimeter... Or. 010 of an inch... And my screen comfortably goes back to the most comfortable point... (Mr. Wulff here is a bit of a modder so I'm surprised he didn't try this already) Oh and I moved 30 Gb of data from my computer through the cable it came with, to my device... So the stock cable does transfer data And the GameCube emulation is actually great... There are some guides online about how to optimize the quality. It might not be good to play Melee or FZero GX... Duhh. But Mario Sunshine and Windwaker I've finished 70% of and they have zero issues. I recommend using the PAL versions btw... Also I've played Twilight princess, Papar Mario TTYD and Star wars Jedi Outcast and they play perfectly...

Btw, i dont know how I forgot to mention this throughout the whole stream, but your retroid functioned exactly as mine did until I found out about the "sleep trick" where you'd put it into sleep mode for 30s and after, performance took a huge jump. The guys at retroid were aware of it and did nothing until like 3 weeks ago and they did an OTA(over the air) update which gave those performance boosts without the sleep trick. Before the trick, ds/gc/ps2 was nowhere near working but after they run pretty damn good. So if you haven't, turn on wifi and update because it makes a very noticeable difference. For reference I can run ps2 and gc with 100% speed or very close to it whereas prior, I could only dream of that. Hope this helps a bit.

While a lot more expensive and a lot larger, the Steam Deck has become my favorite retro emulation machine. It’s powerful enough for GC/Wii, and allows me to use very high end emulation features on older consoles. On top of that I can dock it to a TV and easily use any controller I want. I like playing retro games on handhelds, but sometimes I wanna play it on a TV. This has been the most seamless while also offering a huge library thanks to the extra horsepower. All that and it also just plays PC games. I really love the device.

@@Dracossaint ??? No? I'm very active at keeping tabs on this stuff, because I've been using emulators since age 9. Very good counterpoints there though... I'm not saying "It's not Cycle accuracy therefor it's trash!". It wasn't until like late 2020-ish that PCSX2 got particularly good. Prior to that there was no hardware mipmapping, Vulkan support was a dev-build only thing, the UI was borderline nonexistent, there was way less optimization for software rendering... And I can't imagine a close-source discontinued android PS2 emulator is much stronger than one designed for actual gaming rigs. And apparently it was bad enough that the dev quit development and the internet because of people hounding him that XYZ couldn't run. I mean, the fact these recent handhelds (including the steam deck) can run Saturn is more impressive hardware wise than being able to run PS2. With Saturn the software is mostly there, it just takes more CPU than a super computer to run. With PS2, the android arms of the emulation scene are behind what is already a scene far behind Dolphin. Like, me not getting the point of steam deck shilling aside, I'm speaking as someone who plays PS2 ON a gaming PC. PS2 emulation is still not amazing.

I really like the Steam Deck. The main problem aside from it being too big to fit into my pocket, is that when I boot the thing up I end up playing my Steam library instead of my retro games. It's like Valve knew they'll hook me in!

@warbossgegguz679 Жыл бұрын
@@Dracossaint I'm just very confused by what you mean... like yeah it's better NOW, but I've been following PS2 emulation since 2018, and it was ass for most games at the time even on a dedicated gaming rig. Which wouldn't have been disappointing if Dolphin wasn't fantastic even back then. I have no reason to lie, and I'm not lying. I'm just trying to tell people to taper their expectations for PS2 emulation IN GENERAL so they don't get upset/disappointed that it doesn't work amazingly just because "console old". Which imo is a pretty reasonable thing to tell people.

The GPD XD and the GPD XD Plus were both clamshell designs with actual recessed analog sticks. I had the GPD XD and it was really nice to play on (not the best shoulder buttons though). But neither of those are on the market anymore. Even if they could be found somewhere, both systems suffer from out-of-date hardware and their android versions are horribly out of date. I believe GPD mainly does mini handheld PCs these days. From what I've seen their clamshell PCs still use the recessed analog sticks. No idea why the design was never picked up by any other retro handheld manufacturer.

Just recieved mine two days ago. It's my first emulator as well. It's a lot more work than I expected to get everything set up and running well but I imagine that's similar across all android devices. As far as the flip is concerned, my only complaint so far is that the fan sound is obnoxious. But according to some other reviewers the fan doesn't do anything for performance and the device doesn't get too hot, so I just leave it turned off.

I got mine earlier this week as well. Previously, I used a PSPGO and 3DS as my portable emulation devices, so this is a first for me. Clamshell is a huge plus to me, and I actually do prefer sliders to analog for form factors like these. I do get wulf's similar complaint with the angling on the left analog slider does make me lean like 15degrees off when I go up and down on it. Would've preferred if the DPAD and left analog were swapped It did take a while for me to setup certain emulators and their control mappings, but I think most people will be used to that if they're used to these emulator apps. But no issues a quick web search couldn't resolve. Overall I like it. No issues running GBA/DreamCast/PS1/N64 games. Runs some RPG GameCube games with no issues, but wouldn't recommend GC emulation on it. It does also start running a bit warm while doing GC games, but no throttles. Haven't tried PSP/Switch/NDS/3DS on it yet though.

@@majzako When Retro Dodo and RGC reviewed this, they basically said that (like with the RP3+) you should view PS2 and GC emulation as more of a "bonus" or at least know that it's gonna require a lot of tinkering. Which I'm fine with because the main goal for me is to get a companion/upgrade to my modded N3DSXL, which can't really run anything past the SNES in terms of retro consoles, but has native GBA, DS, and 3DS support. So if I want to play those, it's already my best option even if Citra and DeSeMu/Drastic were easy to configure on this. I've heard it can run PSP no issue at all, so it seems like a great option for everything from the NES to the Dreamcast + GBA and PSP. Plus there are decent android ports of a lot of indie PC games, so that's cool. Literally my only issues are the flared shoulders being weird for a pocketable device, and the speakers being on the back when there's so much real estate on the front of the system.

"It's a nice option for people who don't want to mess around with emulation settings, it's easy to get started." I've been through tutorial videos and forum posts by the dozen and I still only have MAYBE 30% of my flip working after fighting with it on and off for a month. It's been a spectacular pain in the ass. I have to have 6 different launchers just to get what I've gotten working, half the emulators won't install because "it's not the correct version of android." and there's no control customization for the N64 games so they're all mapped REALLY badly. Either I'm doing something VERY wrong and nobody seems to know otherwise or the ease of use was greatly exaggerated. I also managed to get ahold of a Miyoo mini. That was a matter of dropping a couple files onto a micro SD card, letting it do it's updates, and it's super easy to use, 100% functional and has a whole buttload of nifty features the retroid doesn't have. Only reason I bought the retroid was to have something to hook up to my TV or a friend's TV that could run multiplayer games since the Miyoo can't. Kind of regretting grabbing it to be honest.

So if you love older nintendo and sega systems this will be a great buy. I recommend using retroarch for the bulk of emulation, and then switching it up for ps2, gamecube, and dreamcast(sorta). It's so far a wonderful handheld, that I can't seem to put down.

I mean Dolphin's moblie branch and PS2 emulators in general aren't super great even on PC, so that's to be expected. It's just that people don't tend to test multiple games on each platform. Redream is the best for Dreamcast, Duckstation for PSX, PPSSPP for PSP, there's really no "good "option for N64 Mupen is just the best we got atm, and I have no idea what's available for PS2 on android because given the state of PCSX2 on PC I don't really have high hopes for a mobile PS2 emulator being good for like at least another 4 years. Retroarch is a mixed bag in terms of emulation, because a lot of the best emulators don't have libretro cores. At the same time though there are some where I would say using them in retroarch is better than using the standalone versions (mainly in terms of Sega and GB/GBC emulators).

@@warbossgegguz679 I found in some cases parallel is really good for more intensive n64 titles especially on android, star fox 64 is a great example. ps2 is definitely a mixed bag aethersx2 is my next pick. Still not great. I usually lean towards retroarch bc it's a very clean front end that I can configure in fine detail, especially in individual cores.

@@protoseries I always have to be the guy to crush people's dreams when it comes to Android/Linux handhelds when I tell people that solid PS2 emulation is hardly a thing even on PC let alone something like an android device. Overall I like this thing because I'm just looking for an upgrade/alternative to my modded N3DSXL and that's about it. If it can do PSX - DC and PSP (which I know from other reviews it can) + the android ports of some indie games, it's worth the price I'm mainly looking for portability and durability over "jaw-dropping high-end PC level performance" so this fits my needs/wants perfectly. I'm just afraid to adopt early and get burned like people did with the RP3. Also, I would love to see a model revision that addressed my few issues with the design. Namely the speaker placement and flared shoulders. Not that those are deal breakers, it'd just be even cooler to see them changed given they seem to be a gripe that I and most others have with it.

@@warbossgegguz679 That's exactly why I bought it, I wanted to play psx dreamcast and n64 in a clamshell form factor. They all run amazing, and definitely an upgrade to a modded 2ds/3ds. I'm not going to worry about a retroid upgrade, bc I'm pretty happy with the preformance. If the next one ends up with joysticks and better hardware that's amazing, I'll buy that one for gamecube+. If your on the fence, and know what you want to play pull the trigger. It's a wonderful compact device with the power of a retroid pocket 3+.

@@protoseries I guess I just I have way lower expectations for these than Bob and other people in the comments. Like, I don't buy a >$200 handheld and expect it to be on the same level as my $700 gaming laptop just because both are technically portable. Like, yeah, if horsepower enough to run everything under the sun is an issue just get an Ayaneo (not the Air, the REAL ones) and blow the steam deck and most gaming laptops out of the water... for the price of a high-end tower gaming PC (like $1400+ last I checked). I don't even play RPGs on my 3DS in public for the sake of personal emotional/mental investment, so all I'm really looking for in handheld gaming is some decent "pick up and play" experiences without god-awful touch controls. So something like this is great. I just don't have the cash atm. But when I do I'm planning on getting one. Retro Game Corp's video already kind of sold me on it.

I had an odd problem. A first world problem. I have a Miyoo mini, an RP2+, and a Steamdeck. The T618 isn't really enough for gamecube. The odin is expensive when I could just put a clamp controller on my flagship android phone or use the steam deck. The RG405M is basically the PERFECT size... but it's STILL a T618... I need ODIN power in the RG405M size with the hall sticks and I would be good. I gotta wait a bit till full speed gamecube is like $150-200 AND SMALL. Basically what I am saying is, if it's the size of a switch light or bigger? I am NOT putting it in my pocket it goes in a bag. If it goes in a bag? I can just use the deck. I need the flip OR the RG405M with a BETTER SoC.

With GameCube, 3DS, and PS2 not working properly, this is almost certainly a "great in concept but bad in execution" handheld. Best to wait for one or two revisions so the power can catch up.

Why not 3D print a cover for the non-clammshell Retoid Pocket? either a face shell only with inner coutouts to fit the face buttons, or have it extend past the edge with cutouts for the side buttons.

"just make a new 3DS 4head" Pretty sure atm there are patents and such that prevent that, not to mention the manufacturing is a bit rougher if you want something more powerful than a 2013/2015 handheld.

I really want to want this, on paper it's everything I could want, but at $170 (+S&H&D ~$200 total) with the problems it has, it faceplants into that "no man's land" where just getting a grip and portable charger for your existing Android phone makes more sense. I'll just keep using my RG35xx instead.

I'd love this device if it had six face action buttons a la Nomad or Saturn instead of four. Other than space constraints I never did figure out why console makers (including Sega with Dreamcast) ultimately chose four face buttons.
