I remember being over the moon being popular for once, because I was the only person with a portable camera on a school trip. It was the game boy camera. And the school didn’t exactly have a lot of tech rules yet. I argued it was my camera, so I could use it. I was 15. I am now 35 (yes I’m old 😂)

This reminded me of the Dex Drive for N64, which could rip your save data from N64 memory cards onto your PC -- I remember making a Geocities page for people to upload and trade data, which was kinda cool for trading custom characters and maps, etc, but it turns out that NOT MANY OTHER PEOPLE had Dex Drives and also I was like 14 and lived in a tiny town and had one friend, and wow if you've read this far you must be bored

The way i get my pictures off of my camera is: GBCamera -> N64 Transfer Pak+ N64 controller -> Raphnet n64 to USB adapter + their pc N64 Adapter software to get the save file off of there, Then just take that .Sav file and use GBCamera Dump to get the raw .bpm files. I do it this way, since i already had a transfer pak and in my case just buying the controller adapter was cheaper than getting one of the other ways to rip a gameboy save file. So if one of you in the audience is thinkin' of doing something like this and have about the same stuff, do so! Taking these pictures and seeing them unfiltered is quite fun!

You're desktop background is amazing lol. I'm glad you finally tried using the printer in a video. Sorry it sucks. I've tried cleaning the heating printer element so many times and just can't get to it directly. It's essential a receipt printer that uses heat on thermal paper. I've actually threw a receipt from the store into and it works. Unfortunately, I left paper in it when I had it in storage and it became crusty and crumbly which is what all the mess is inside of it and why it doesn't print so great anymore.

I had one of these around 1997/8 and I was 12/13 at the time. This was insane! First ever digital camera, and before the Nokia face-plate brick phone came out in high school. I chose a green camera as I thought it went well with my see-through pocket GB matching the chip sets. Fond memories! Do I wish I still had it? No, it's f******* shit.

Awesome details and video! I was also inspired to try the Game Boy camera as a webcam. I made my setup slightly simpler again by using a Super Game Boy + a Retro-Bit Super RetroTRIO Plus 3 in 1, which gives your direct HDMI output and a cheap USB/HDMI capture dongle!

The gameboy camera gallery music is 8 bit lofi pre lofi 24/7 channels. That boop bu buh boo bu bu boo bu buh boo bu buh buhbuh boop bu buh boo bu bu boo bu buh boo bu buh buhbuh so relaxing I have a gameboy camera I picked up last year for old times sake. I only have a crap GBA original that you cannot see the screen on and has no battery cover to take pictures with using it. Overall it's cool but I've always wanted the printer. I wish there was a better way to print than the thermal printing that comes from the OFFICIAL gameboy printer. If someone made one that would print the pictures a bit better like how they were intended to look that would be cool. I never had the printer as a kid but the gameboy camera was one of my first digital cameras and part of the start of my love for photography. I just bought a new vlog camera this week the Sony Powershot DS (Digital Still) HXC80. I was considering the Canon Mark II for a point and shoot toss in my bag vlogging camera but it didn't have the flip monitor AND was over $600. The Powershot was only around $400. So far I am a lot happier with the Canon cameras I've used both for digital and analog over the years. In high school I took a photo class and had to learn how to develop in the dark room and also develop the film from the roll in this machine where it heats and dries the exposed roll or something. I barely remember the film development part but projecting the film to be developed on paper was a lot of fun and gave me a new love for photography. I now have a liking for somewhat older phone cameras which have that lagginess and distorted image that came with earlier mobile cameras before we had camera phones that are better than many old and casual cameras. I have the Blue Gameboy Camera in a plastic bag in storage in my closet and I found several mobile apps that ATTEMPT to recreate the gameboy camera but generally fail to do so. I still use them from time to time. All of them are on iOS except one called Retroboy I got for my Android. Retroboy is free and is probably the best of the bunch in terms of gameboy camera app knock offs. I wish my primary phone had Retroboy. On iOS I downloaded 8bit: Camera which is my favorite for its simplicity and relative closeness to the gameboy camera. I think it was 99 cents for that one but there's no adds and it works pretty solid. There is also one called "BitCam" which also is super minimalist and has a few basic color palattes and is much more "bitmappy" than the other apps. Finally I downloaded one called PowerUp which offers in-app purchases to unlock cameras imitating different systems. Of course the gameboy camera is one of the ones you have to pay for. It also recreates what photos would possibly look like on other retro consoles like the Genesis and SNES though to mixed (mostly poor) results. Powerup does have a fun user interface with a UI that imitates the controllers and themes of each system. If I was going to recommend one for iOS it would be BitCam because it's free and if you have 99¢ I'd get 8bit: Camera. I believe 8bit: Camera was developed a few years ago so it has a retro style feel to the app that is trying to imitate a retro camera. I think this is just unintentional and the logo for the app icon looks like it was drawn in MS Paint. I'm sure there has got to be someone who can do a better job making a gameboy camera app that shoots 1:1 or as close to imitating the gameboy camera as possible. It would probably take a lot of work to get that image to look as pixelated and messy as the original but I think they could just port the gameboy camera and then program some algorithm to interpret how the gameboy camera lens and software would interpret a picture. If Nintendo did it that would be awesome but I don't see that coming. Brian Eno has a great quote about outdated mediums. I think anyone could relate to it if you are into retro stuff. “Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.” ― Brian Eno, A Year With Swollen Appendices
