Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge indeed, as a matter of fact shooters tend to have AI on their servers to "figure out" what other players are doing so that data updates don't need to happen every single frame. Basically the necessary data is stripped and everything else is only calculated locally on your console, and every X frames all clients are "updated" and get new info from the other players. In between those update cycles, there's a lot of "i think the player wanted to do this" which is why shooters tend to freeze much less than games like smash, since they literally "skip" those dips. However when you're playing a fighting game clearly you cannot employ this method as frames matter substantially. You cannot "guess" what a player wants to do for 30 frames and then update the clients. This in all honesty is a serious disadvantage for fighting games as they freeze a lot more often. Unfortunately Nintendo's shitty online does not help since we do not even get servers for the games to help in this matter. However, dedicated servers would STILL not be good enough for smash, at least NOT for pros. I am sure there would still be ocasional dips that would be significant enough to annoy them.
@paulblart85686 жыл бұрын
I get that dedicated servers are expensive, but we are also paying for Switch Online. When I pay for something I expect to get my money's worth, and at the moment, there is not a single reason for me to be paying for this horrible excuse for an online service until Nintendo switches to dedicated servers.
@seanc13616 жыл бұрын
Thank you - heaps of publishers provide dedicated servers. Smash ultimate is selling amazingly, how can anyone say its too expensive.. After most people who got the online service only decided to for Smash. But it's just Nintendo being fkn clueless - so typical Nintendo. I assume it was too expensive to add that ethernet port too, cause only expensive items can afford those premium ethernet ports that literally everything else comes with. Such a big company and equally big dumb dumb.

@EskChan195 жыл бұрын
@@B33T33W Where did i say console games are Peer-to-Peer? Nowhere that's right. Most games are not. But again, i never said that. What i said is that you don't actually pay for the servers. Which is true. Because on console, dedicated servers can go two ways. Either a third party publisher hosts them themselves, then paying Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo for the online infrastructure does nothing, because they don't get a cent of your subscription. Or they host on Sonies/Microsofts/Nintendos servers. But that's pretty expensive. The publisher has to pay a pretty sum to the company they use the servers of, and that is how they are maintained. Either way, none of the money you pay for the online subscribtion actually goes towards maintaining the servers for online play. You could argue about First-Party Games now, but those are maintained easily by the sales of the games. Videogames have among the highest margin of profit of any medium on the world. Using some of that profit to keep their servers running definitely wouldn't ruin companies of the scale of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. And the overarching infrastructure is easily paid for by the PS Store, XBox Marketplace or Nintendo eShop, where every Sale made gives some of the money to their respective owners. So really, they can easily afford all of this without subscribtions. The only reason they have them is because people are paying them, and no company would refuse free money for doing absolutely nothing.

Smash over wifi is perfectly fine, i played with 2 switches connecting on the same wifi line while using videochat as well to a friend in the same matches from his own home. I could establish lag free matches. People tend to overestimate the wifi at there own home. Because you have full wifi signal, only user of the connection and connected to 5ghz doesnt equal great lag free gaming. Most complainers probably cheaped out on there home network or never spend a dime and use the free rental router they got from the provider. Never doubting they could be part of the problem as well. The lan adapter is not a real solution for most users. It only is a good option if you play docked mode exclusively and the dock is nearby there internet router / modem. Most houses dont have a way to establish a wired connection outside the living room.

Look up NAT type connections. You had a type D connection in your first video witch is why you had a bad connection. NAT B is typical for wired connections and some wireless connections depending on several factors. NAT C is usually wireless that is blocked by some sort of wall or other enclossed cabinet. NAT A is when you come directly from your modem to a device skipping the router/switch. learned this the hard way years ago with my PS3. I ran wireless and the NAT type was C as soon as I wired in it became a NAT B and my speeds were better.

I'll be trying a wired connection in a couple of weeks once I get an adapter, but as it currently stands it's not playable. Seeing as my PC always plays nearly perfectly in every game (p2p or client-server) I had just assumed the wifi adapter in the switch must be garbage for stability. We shall see!

I haven't done much digging on this, but the speed (in the case of speed tests for computers) is testing your download throughput to a specific server. So if Nintendo up'd the throughput (mbps) on wherever they have your switch testing against, that'll cause the speed to "increase" when you measure it.
@IAmADavidAMA6 жыл бұрын
also the latency on wireless isn't the best. It's usually dirty compared to wired. Lots of interference and the further away you are from the point the worse it gets. not to mention how much more overhead there is for things like packet collision detection, error checking, and other such things to make sure you aren't competing with other wireless devices.

Fight game players prefer wired connections because NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR WIFI IS, ITS STILL WIFI. Its going to have momentary hiccups no matter the speed. Ethernet cables remove this problem. There is nothing better than offline fighting games, but if you want to take them semi seriously and play online, USE AN ETHERNET CABLE. The other player gets the exact same lag spikes from your wifi as you do, no matter that anybody says. That is why online tournament organizers, like ESL, require you to use a wired connection. To emulate the offline experience as accurately as possible. Even then, there are small differences in what you can and cant do online in fighting games. Online strats a hella real.

Its recommended that the switch works effectively on a wireless connection that is 5G or 5Ghz compared to 2.4Ghz, which is used for most networks. So it could maybe the type of wifi or the amount of devices connected to the network. The network I have is 2.4Ghz which has many different devices connected to it bringing mine down to 800 kb to 2 mb per second while other devices say about 50 mb per second. So once again it could be the type of network. (I've made a reply about this, and yes this mostly covers wireless conections, but this could still be helpful.)

Had a couple laying around the house that got bad speeds so I bought the official thing Nintendo was hocking, still had crap speeds. Now as you said, speeds seem fine. I honestly think it's something on Nintendo's end with their servers. They either didn't have their server's upgraded, or weren't expecting initial server loads to be what they were, or had speeds capped or something or other. Or maybe it had something to do with them launching the 'you now have to pay for online' thing.

The only way to accurately test bandwidth is to disconnect all other devices from your network when you do a speed test. This is something people don’t understand when they’re experiencing slower speeds. They go test their network and see they’re getting a third or a fifth of what they are paying for, and they think it’s something faulty. Well, little did they know their roommate was downloading a new game, or watching Netflix, or their PC starting downloading updates automatically without them knowing. There’s too many factors to account for. The best way to test is to take your device and bypass the router entirely and plug directly into your modem. That way you can be sure there’s no other devices sucking up bandwidth.

Your other video is gold. However, average users struggle to minimize interference that can affect connection. Thank you for the other video that was super informative, and thanks for this one I guess... for the dumb-dumbs.
@sniperfox476 жыл бұрын
I mean it doesn't matter how much you cut down on interference, adjust wifi channels, and place your switch in a perfect place, you'll still get a much lower ping and stable connection out of Ethernet. Ethernet is typically on the order of 0.8-1.3ms while Wireless AC can vary from 1.5-10ms over the course of a few packets. The only thing worse than Wifi is Powerline Ethernet which can be 2-3x the latency of WiFi if you have noisy home powerlines. Edit: a kinda reliable source just to illustrate my point. It's a wireless N standard, but the AC standard didn't affect latency too much. Most tests you find will offer similar results if they've got it set up decently: linustechtips.com/main/topic/445640-the-powerline-is-low-latency-myth/
@SaintsXIV6 жыл бұрын
@@sniperfox47 This is true! For Smash and my small group of gaming friends that do hectic 4-player matches in the Battle Arena, we understand how our wireless connections work and already have dozens of hours of seemingly lagless, near-flawless matches. Enjoying sessions that go hours without any apparent hiccups. So while minimizing ping is very useful with ethernet, the wireless on the Switch is quite capable of providing a pristine experience.

@@SaintsXIV any tips on getting better connections? What's your speed averaging?
@SaintsXIV6 жыл бұрын
@@acooldude NAT B, ~50 Down, ~10 Up. Speeds aren't really super important since you really are only required to have 3D/1U (oof, haha), that stable ping time though is key. On your pc hit up command prompt and ping google for a while and see if there are any spikes in your connection (the ms time, as well as packet loss), (google how to command prompt ping test if need be). If the ms results are consistent, and low (lower the better), you should be in good shape, if there are spikes all over or even packet loss, something is wrong. Common things that affect connection are walls (or the electronics in them, and no one is getting through solid concrete/brick), appliances, lamps, electrical/energy sources, so a clean path to your connection will help the most! There are of course various settings on routers that can cause some issues with data passing through, as well as other devices on the network soaking up the bandwidth - but a good rule of thumb is if you can pull a solid, stable connection with low ping on ethernet, then your service should be capable of providing a near identical experience while gaming wireless on the Switch. Xbox/PS4/PC may not be so nice. Variables are the worst when trying to determine what an actual cause is to connection issues. For ease, Ethernet it all day, but if you're willing to do a little bit of a fight, Wireless on the Switch is perfectly fine!

Yeah I changed that MTU number that a lot websites recommend and am still using wifi, which is mostly stable as the modem/router is next to the hub getting 60mbps down speed at most times of the day when tested. I usually play with one or two specific people, so to your point if you have a regular group then everyone getting one may bring some notable stability or hopefully a lag free day. I’d like to know what kind of speed is recommended for ideal experience. I can say right now even with the recent download speed, I often find myself either having to repeat input that were missed by due to very short but constant lag spikes (especially during sensitive moments like off stage recovery). I’ve also noted that some character using just my wifi connection are absolutely unplayable as they are when playing offline- specifically Ken and Ryu, and now terry. These characters have classic inputs from that arcades that often muddled up or just entirely missed due to connection instability. That said, I’ve sort of trained myself to play a version of online sMash where my inputs are more deliberate and I can used immediately tell when I’ve missed now from experience. Anyways, I intended to buy myself and my buddy an adapter, so if end up back I’ll let you know how that work out. Thank you the information. (Didn’t watch the first video)

One other thing to consider is that the Switch seems to be very unforgiving when it comes to WiFi interference. I have gigabit internet, and while my Switch downloads games very quickly over WiFi, it’s unusable for multiplayer because I live in a high rise and there are literally 50+ WiFi networks within range of me. All of these networks are competing over the same slice of radio spectrum, which doesn’t cause too many problems with streaming or downloads but is a huge issue for games where latency and reliability are important. I couldn’t even finish a single Smash fight without getting disconnected until I got a LAN adapter. If you live in an apartment or just somewhere with crowded WiFi, the LAN adapter may really help significantly.
