as someone who is consistently paranoid about their hygiene: i think the main issue that has folks so heated in this debate is the automatic assumption that your cleanliness or dirtiness says something big about you as a whole person, when in reality it’s just a temporary state your body happens to be in due to existing. we will all stink at some point, it is inevitable lmao. so it’s best to not get twisted up about it and just do your best with what you have available. the “coming home from the club” scenario stood out to me because i feel like neither opinions are worth getting all that upset about? like yeah sometimes people are too physically exhausted to clean up right after big events. is it gross? yes. does it mean that person is always unsanitary and should be given a value judgement? no. life happens, shit happens. luckily most of us have access to running water lmao.

I'm allergic to one of the main ingredients in soap, which honestly is not a very uncommon allergy. Cocamidopropyl Betaine will be found in basically every liquid soap and shampoo and can also be found in lotions, sunscreen, toothpaste, and other toiletries. It makes me break out and have huge rashes, so its more harmful for my health to be using so many products because if anything that stays on my skin has Coca, it will make me react. There's very very few soaps that don't have Coca so yes I do shower but the idea of having a whole "skincare routine" is impossible for me.

Just because their skin can handle five showers doesn't mean everyone can, Some people have sensitive skin or skin conditions, I have eczema and I shower every other day bc I can't sweat too much without it flaring up but its also why I can't shower every day. Types of hair can also affect how many times someone takes a shower, If they have oily hair they usually shower more times than people who don't have oily hair. And the ones who don't have oily hair if they shower as much as one with oily hair it will dry their hair out real quick. I totally relate to this! The only reason I bathe as often as I do (2 times a day) is because I'm very sensitive to the sensation of sweat. So if I sweat, even the tiniest bit, I have to have a bath or I'm going to have a mental breakdown over how gross I feel. It's kinda like the same sensation of clothes that just aren't right. Other than that, my hygiene is bare-bones. Wash my hair once a week then braid it and leave it. Wash my face like once a month. Because doing those things zaps my energy (while bathing gives me energy). I'm always astonished when I see people with these 3+ step skincare routines because how?????? That's SO MUCH. Even just having a bath scrub, body wash, body lotion routine is wild to me. There are already so many steps in just making sure you're not smelly, your hair isn't matted, and your teeth don't have a week of plaque on them that doing much more than that seems so crazy to me. I've recently started starting washing my face daily, but it took me years of really hard work to get there. Before, I'd do it in the shower when I washed by hair which has varied from once a week (now) to once every few months (my early teens). Executive (dys)function makes "simple" things impossibly huge and difficult. To Explain: Hygiene is very complicated. And it's hell with executive function issues. A main part of executive function is struggling with planning, organization, the perseverance needed to see a plan to the end, and the self-awareness to understand why you need to do it. Struggling to plan: Figuring what steps that have to happen is... stupidly hard. It doesn't come naturally. Brushing teeth isn't just brushing teeth. It's picking up the brush. Picking up the toothpaste. Removing the lid. Putting toothpaste on the brush. Rinsing it. Brushing the teeth. Making sure you get every area. Spitting out the toothpaste. Rinsing the mouth. Putting the toothpaste back. Putting the brush back. And every step is just as huge and impossible to tackle as the last. It takes considerable effort to remember each step and in what order. Organizing that information into a plan: Like, yes, I know I need to wash my face, but when? What are the steps? Do I do it before I wash my body, or after? How do I move my hands? Keeping the perseverance: I know I have to do this stuff to wash my face. I rinse my face. I get the wash in my hand, then sit there, waiting, thinking. Should I keep going? Is there any real reason why I need to this now? I've already done plenty I can just stop. I did it yesterday. What harm could missing one day do? I'm just so tired and exhausted, I can just Not Do It. And it's a fight to get myself back into the headspace to continue. The self-awareness needed: Yeah, I get I should wash my face, but WHY? It'll get rid of dirt and oil. But... why? Why should I care about removing the dirt and oil? Because it'll make my skin healthier. Why should I care about having healthy skin? Because then I'll have less pimples and a more even complexion. Why should I care about that? And that's constant, endless loop with everything. And that's not even to delve into sensory issues. The feeling of the toothbrush against my teeth makes me want to punch something and pull out my hair at the roots. The feeling of wet hair on my back makes is so excruciating, like I got shocked, and I can't help but panic and cry. Water on my face feels like pins and needles and it's just so painful and uncomfortable and like I'm suffocating and I would peel my skin off just to get away from that horrid sensation. It takes so much hard work and dedication to get past those things and work through them. I couldn't even put my ears under water until I was 8 because the feeling was so disgusting and horrifying to me.

19:00 no because you're right. not completely hygiene related? but I've noticed after covid more people are forgetting to cover their mouth when they cough? I don't know if it's just my area but the amount of times i've seen people straight up cough into the air is a lot more than before.

No offense to kids, but that feels like a thing exclusive to children. Are some people not taught to sneeze into their elbow, or cover their mouth? ...or is it just "anti-mask" brain rot that has made some people really nasty? The only "anti-mask" agenda people should be supporting is for ND people, like why do we shame the person stimming harmlessly and not the people intentionally or not coughing into the air like babies?

I went on a vacation with a friend recently and actually had to ask her to cover her mouth while coughing the nastiest cough ever bc it was making me really uncomfortable to sleep in the same bed as her while she was spewing everywhere. The difference between us and the TikTok neat freaks is that for us (and most of the population) it’s not performative. I’ve seen so many of these tiktokers use ocd as a reason and that’s upsetting because (even if they have ocd) they’re just adding to the stereotype and cause people to discount those who’s ocd manifests in a hyper organized way. @@user-kx5en8dg7uuh, I get you're aware of mental illness, but sometimes... it's not that simple. I mean it hardly is that simple. Do depressed people, and I'm mainly thinking younger people/teens without jobs since that's me, go outside often? Maybe I'm projecting but I don't think depressed people head outside all that often, especially if they live alone or if they're ND/disabled as well. If anything the people who don't smell great probably don't have the time/access to water, or they genuinely don't smell themselves. Or another possibility I just thought of, maybe they aren't exactly in the safest environment to be clean, unfortunately. Yes the stink can suck. I've been on both ends, thankfully in my own home, but again you don't know what someone's going through. It's a lot easier to say you get it and not, looking at someone who is literally incapable of taking a shower due to something like autism/ADHD or severe depression, actually get it. There's certainly been some progress but I feel we still have far more to work through if we want to destigmatize mental illnesses, and the wringer it puts people through. Sometimes that effort is spent on making sure they eat for the day (recently I've been going days without eating until 11 at night), or that they make it to work on time, or managing to brush their teeth. It may suck for the external party, but I can assure you it sucks more knowing you physically can wash your body, but the thing that makes your body move refuses to act on it.

@@Vesperad0 i'm aware of all of that. that's why i suggested the literal bare minimum of wiping your armpits and crotch. i also struggle with taking full showers when depressed but it's a compromise i learned in therapy that works. honestly part of the treatment of depression is still to force yourself to do *something*, even if it's not completely up to normal standards. if you have enough energy to leave the house you can grab a napkin or cloth and swipe your pits for two seconds with sink water. also, i can't believe i have to say this, but i am obviously not talking about people who do not have access to clean water. and i would never comment on someone's smell in public because i know that cleanliness is a privilege for many. but let's be real the average american does in fact have access to clean and running water consistently. destigmatizing mental health does also not mean letting people fall into bad coping mechanisms. i am not judging anyone by offering a middle ground solution to bathing when struggling with mental illness. yes it's important to remember that people with depression etc cant always do what needs to be done. but any good therapist will tell you to find somethings that works for you to maintain some level of routine. again not saying anything in judgement, but i am a firm believer that some type of cleaning should be done to offset smells in public period. still i am not the type of person to comment on someone who smells in public, as like ive said i dont know what they are going through

Ok in defense of not washing legs- my dermatologist literally recommended to only fully wash them after sweating and/or making them dirty via sunscreen, working outside, or swimming. Washing them all of the time removes a lot of natural oils that help protect the skin, and as long as the shower is warm and you are actually putting enough soap on the rest of your body it’s not like your calves are dirty. Obviously I still wash my upper legs and private areas but washing knees and calves every single time always ended up with my skin being mad at me even if I put lotion on. But yeah I still wash them if I do sweat or do anything that would actually make them dirty. However just chilling over the weekend resting? I’m not bothering with scrubbing. Constantly sanitizing contributes to microbial resistance, the skin barrier can be damaged, it can weaken your immune system, etc.

Yeah, the entirety of Australia had 3 minute showers for about a decade during the Millennium Drought and we were perfectly fine. Like, I’m sorry, but what is everyone else doing in the shower? I know some friends with really thick hair would turn the water off if they had to condition, and washing hair and shaving on the same night sometimes meant I would do the same; but 99% of the time it was a non-issue. Maybe the knowledge that we were on the brink of running out of water helped as a motivator but…IDK.

As a person with both depression and OCD, I oscillate between having a hard time getting myself to even shower when I relapse into depression, and having obsessive and thorough cleaning rituals when I'm managing my depression better. And I understand that both of these things are obnoxious, and people shouldn't be glamorizing either problem - but I do think you should extend a bit more grace to these people. There's a chance that they're only bragging about these things because they sincerely have no self-awareness about how unwell their behavior is. I would just... ignore these people and move on, honestly. I don't really understand why seeing someone clean a jar of mayonnaise would bring anything to your mind except pity for how far gone they must be. I think you might be overthinking this issue a bit.

@@TheNwr1 it's not that it's being criticized, it's how she's doing it. It's this argument she made of "if you're washing your groceries, you think you're better than me", which I just don't think is productive since that's absolutely not what obsessive cleaning is about. She's talking completely past the issue. It's about an internal nagging driving you to do something and has absolutely nothing to do with other people. I also think that she makes a massive assumption when she calls it "performative", as it implies they wouldn't be doing this if not to post on tiktok, and I frankly don't understand what went through her mind when making this leap. I don't understand why she thinks anyone would pretend to be obsessively clean. It doesn't really make sense and there's no real evidence that the people cleaning their jars of mayonnaise on tiktok weren't doing so before deciding to record it, and don't continue doing so after recording it. It is a strange and baseless assumption, and once you take that assumption away, you just have a buncha clean freaks, being themselves in public. @@zenleeparadiseI totally get this, I agree with some of your sentiments...but there really does feel like performance. And I get a feeling means nothing compared to what it actually is, but at the same time I think you're going ""too far"" in the opposite direction by extending so much grace to those who definitely are doing it for show. Or ragebait, who knows atp. Either way I've seen my fair share of people both before and during tiktok lie constantly about whatever it is they do, hype beast or "aesthetics" channel or something more serious like activism/social work. It's like everyday somebody is trying to find something that makes them unique and/or better than others, something that will cause their comments to say "yeah me too girl!!" but neither the commenter or uploader actually does what they claim. It's not like we need proof or anything, I don't like the idea of people having to prove themselves online over things that don't matter, but again just too many people heavily attached to what society considers beauty: and because of that, they're coming up with microtrend aesthetics like "clean girl" and making posts about celebrities aging "gracefully" when they're "unproblematic"...as if people weren't partying while there was (and IS) an active pandemic going around. As if your beauty or proximity to "godliness" is in your fleshy mask. But hey, that's only partially related. Of course my issue doesn't lie with the people who have OCD or other disorders that make them do these things. I'm autistic, it'd make no sense for me to be accusatory to them. My gripe is entirely with those that most definitely say "omg I'm so OCD lol" as if it doesn't severely impact a person's life. People who use this for ragebait, or the average "doesn't want to admit it" racist/xenophobe who straight up believes all brown people are inherently dirtier than white people. Which, yeah, is unfortunately a thing that has and still does exist. Which then compels some brown folk to prove they are clean, harming their psyche and physical body at the same time just to disprove the bull that is racism.

@@Vesperad0 I'm sorry, but there is no way to "overcorrect" in this case, seeing as the options are 1) be upset with a bunch of strangers because of what you cynically assume about them or 2) don't think about it and move on with your day. The second option might not be "correct" in the sense that it might not be correctly punishing these people for being like "omg I'm so OCD", but also there's no downside in not socially punishing those people, and doing so is in fact giving into the idea that it's rage-bait, and ignoring them isn't giving them anything to work with at all... So, yeah, I just don't agree that granting them grace is any sort of "overcorrection" and I don't really appreciate the suggestion that I'm not obsessing enough about this, considering I think I've already spent way too much time thinking about this BS as it is.

Besides the fact that hot water feels great and it’s relaxing to linger, I think an effective shower could easily be done in just a few minutes. washing your chicken ONLY makes sense if you clean everything with boiling hot water or bleach afterwards. cause if your chicken has salmonella, it will die after cooking, but the counter may have some of it on it. and the apple you put on it (even after cleaning the counter w a towel) won’t be processed with heat. that’s how you get salmonella in your apple. realistically, meat from supermarkets is 99% safe, but if you trust your local walmart to have germ-free meat, there is no reason to wash it. you’re just spreading the bacteria.

Everything in excess is perjuditial. Including washing too often. Our bodies not only have bad bacteria, but good bacteria also. This is also why it is very bad that people get antibiotic resistance or get antibiotics when they dont need them; it kills your good bacteria. So washing yourself 5 times a day...i cant think of a day schedule that would have you needing 5 showers a day. I understand showering in the morning and if you later exercise or go to the gym obviously get another shower afterwards. Or maybe showering at night after a long day outside or very hot day. The max times i wash myself a day are 2, and obviously its quick showers. Thats another thing, some people abuse the cleaning products. You dont need body scrubs, sponges, etc everytime you take a shower. You just need a body wash most of the time, and you dont need to be scrubing it all over your body all the time. Your skin gets too dry, it gets itchy...sure you can have a body moisturaizer afterwards but you dont need that everytime you get a shower. You need to wash more often the areas in our bodies that get the dirtier everyday, you dont need to wash your hair, whole body everyday (yes, including people who get greasy hair easily; you dont need to wash it everyday, you can be with a greasy hairstyle for a day or two, or get dry shampoo, but i understand some people like to have their hair like freshly washed all the time). And with your body is the same; you dont need to be scrubbing your arms, your legs...all the time with soap. It is okay if you went out and caught some outside smells; like it happens to me when im near people who smoke or places where people smoke mostly. 15:40 i think is totally possible to take a shower in like 4 or 5 mins. You dont need to wash your hair everytime you shower, how much time do you take to wash the rest of the body? Or some guys because they have short hair can wash everything in 5 mins or less. And yes, be good clean. Like you just need to get under the water, then take gel or shampoo, apply it where it needs, scrub for just seconds or max a min if your are shampooing, and then rinse it. Thats all a basic shower takes, you dont need to be body scrubbing, i dont count getting shaved as part of the cleaning routine...so yeah
@yagirlzee4 ай бұрын
i agree with what you said about the body scrubs/sponges...exfoliation every day (or twice a day) is excessive like you're defo scrubbing away too much oil and causing too much trauma to the skin. 5 minute shower to me isn't crazy either. On long days, I tend to shower twice a day and for the second one, it's usually just a quicker rinse, focus on the arms/legs because I am tired and taking 20 minutes per shower isn't good for the Earth (or your water bill)
