@@yoshthebeast2052not how it works, though. resellers are actively buying up any clothing the deem expensive or sellable from affordable thrift stores and in turn making the stores realize they can price items higher. this in turn makes it so not only are there little to no clothes at thrift stores that one might want to own for themselves (and connected to that, clothes that others would be willing to buy for a higher price) and that even if there were nice clothes, they would likely be priced higher than most would be able to afford, and wouldnt turn a profit being resold unless the price was concerningly high. so no, you cant just "do the same thing resellers are" unless you already ride off daddys money and are able to sustain a reseller business from the getgo. i feel your logical thinking skills may have been thrown out the window while you were typing this, you might want to go grab them logic went flying out the window, huh

@@yoshthebeast2052 so youre going to ignore the part where i directly mentioned how high resale prices drive thrift stores to raise prices, meaning that charity stores specifically created for homeless and low income people to buy clothes are getting more and more out of touch? resellers arent forced to resell. there are about one million other side jobs hobbies and hustles that can help low income people stay on their feet without actively taking away resources from other low income people & households. also, f off with that last sentiment. you cant say "lol just go to thrift stores and buy stuff you want" then say "resellers are taking the good items huh". if a reseller hits a thrift store for stock, then the items in due time will become more expensive and out of the price range of any average person going there because they quite literally cannot afford anything more expensive. also means those average people will be unable to afford any clothes they want to actually wear as the majority will be resold, and the rest will be out of their price range.

I once witnessed herd of resellers doing the depop thing IN REAL LIFE OUT IN THE WILD. They were looking up things online to see what they could resell it for, and debating about it. Like, girlypop, this here is not small business activity. You are actively stealing from those in need to fuel your greed. Unless you are doing something to change these items (repairing, designing, some other method of transformation of the clothes) there is no need for you to see a pretty blouse for $5 and say "This goes for $40 on eBay!"

im not REALLY disagreeing w u, bc i agree w ur sentiment (i am a poor person who dislikes resellers taking clothes i need from the thrift store.. but i also sell maybe 10% of my thrift buys and yes i do it based on item value), but i want to say- supply & demand are what inform prices. i’ve taken sm economics courses and that is simply the logic of 90% of people. even if you dont AGREE, it is the truth. depop sellers price for their demand, and since their audience is a high elasticity market, upselling works Well for them. so… why would they stop? there needs to be an entire overhaul of how society talks about preused clothes and the value of clothing in general. resellers contribute to this system but tbh are one of the victims of it (not MORESO than us poor ppl, but they are cogs in the machine!!!!)

@@gabeminson I’m not mad at people selling one or two clothes every now and then. I sell my stuff to Plato’s Closet when they don’t fit me or when a certain style is no longer what I’m going for. I’m talking about people who use this as their “side hustle.” I have a problem with people bulk buying a ton of cute clothes just to upsell them. They’re taking from people (like you and me) who don’t have the money to buy from the mall or stores that sell tops at $20 or pants at $25+. You're right, if you buy clothes that are of quality and use a ton of resources to create (most jeans if I'm not wrong use a ton of water to make- for example) then prices would *In an ideal world* reflect that. Prices as low as $2 and $10 for great clothes is absolutely insane when compared to what it costs to make them. But we don't live in an ideal world. I don't know where you are, but I'm in the U.S. and I work part time while studying, I don't buy clothes just to buy clothes, I buy them to wear over- and over- and over again because I know the opportunity to spend money on nice jeans or a cute top doesn't just roll around every pay day for me. So when I go thrifting and see people planning how they are going to upsell clothes that I would have loved to get my hands on for an affordable price WHILE AT THE THRIFT STORE (not mad- just saying that it's a setting for used clothes at usually affordable prices), I get upset. It's very unfortunate that we live in a world where people are NEEDING to find side hustles that'll earn them more money to live. You're right, some of these people are just as much of a victim of the system as we are. I understand that. People do what they have to so they can live. I am not mad at them in that situation, it is the system. HOWEVER, that still doesn't make it "right" you know what I mean? We do what we have to in order to survive while taking away from others (which is just the way life is currently, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism and all the other slogans). But it still sucks, and I will grumble about it, because when I've been looking for a pair of shoes that aren't beat up to wear and I see someone with a cart of the nicest shoes in the store- I'm not thinking about "Supply VS Demand" I'm thinking about "I need these shoes for work- and this person is potentially just buying them to sell them at 3x the price." These resellers are taking from the less fortunate to sell to the more fortunate, not RICH people, just more fortunate people. Instead of going to the thrift store they can hand over a few more bucks to buy from the trendy online thrift store. At the end of the day, we're both reaching for hand me downs- but even then there are those among us who NEED them. And taking from them will never be made any less annoying to me. They deserve a chance to dress stylish too. And before they had a way to- before thrifting became a literal hobby for those with a lot of expendable income. System, capitalism, supply and demand, be dammed. I still stand that groupies of "Small Bussiness owner" should not be raiding thrift stores in order to line their pockets. There is no finder's fee when it comes to finding trendy clothes at a thrift store, yet these Depop girlies make it seem like there should be. And they won't stop btw. My bitter annoyance and slight disgust means nothing when faced with $. So morals, the market, and the invisible hand, elasticity of a consumer base, the true price of clothes, and child labor, eco-friendly consumption, and whatever else can be thrown into the talk about Clothes in general (because it is VERY complicated and messy), The Market, Consumers, Production, and Brands means nothing. If you really want to boil it down to its base- people are just selling goods. And that's what everyone else is doing. So no, in that sense, there's no reason to stop. I'm talking morals, you're talking market. And I don't disagree with you on a very simple sense. I understand. But I am still upset lol. (I'm not mad at you btw, just word vomiting my full opinion and thoughts on the matter)

People will buy these clothes off of Mercari Japan, and resell them on Depop for sometimes even a hundred dollars. They take advantage of the fact that most people aren’t aware of proxy services so they upcharge a lot. Like I said, it’s a children’s brand, so they run small. These resellers will often lie about the sizing of these clothes and will say that a size 130cm skirt (or about a size 8) would fit a size xs-s, when I’m and xs-s in us sizing and can only fit their largest size (160cm/size 16) in bottoms most of the time. omg your bit about "toy story".. i have a story! back in the 90s when the first movie came out, my mom (bless her) wanted to get me the woody doll they made that had the pull-string to make him talk and everything. she thought it was cute and fun and 4ish year old me was like "sure whatever i just wanna go to toys r us to look at plushies". as the story went from how my mom would tell it, we got through the whole shopping experience without a hitch, she had woody in our cart, i was chilling and reading a picture book in the cart's little seat, all good. until! we got to our car and my mom put the bag with woody in it next to me in the back seat. according to her, i slowly turned my head to the bag, opened it to look at the doll in the face for a few moments, then turned to my mom with huge eyes and said "take him back". she was like what?? why? and all i did was shake my head, stare at the doll, and repeated louder "take it back!" my mom had just started the car so she just turned it back off and we returned to the store. cut to my mom, bag with woody in one hand and me, still looking petrified in the other, walking back to the register we were just at only a minute ago. the cashier was confused then she and my mom had a little laugh at my expense because the cashier said that she saw that happen more often than people think and for similar reasons (i.e. kids being nervous about a talking toy or those who've seen the movie and found the living toys horrifying) and assured my mom that it was fine. fast forward to today and i don't feel any type of way about the toy story series besides wondering why they're still milking that franchise after over 20 years now and laugh about my authentic 1998 woody doll that never was because baby me got scared at the very last minute

DEPOP SELLER HERE!!!! I’m grateful Im not like every other seller: I sold 3 pieces of sweaters for $32 😤 spend $23 on all of them. But when people bundle on my store I pay shipping. My outcome (profit) came to $5 🥲. I underprice my items. And I always offer 3+ stickers on all orders and 25% off their next order. It’s hard to make profit on Depop is because of the Fees.

I’m pretty sure that when you’re selling something that was previously owned, the idea is to actually sell it for less than what you paid as value has been lost. with the exception of a piece that’s really old where inflation has had time to marinate. for example. $5 in 1970’s could be $15 now. therefore sell for let’s say $10. (not fact checked, just rough example) other than that, you’re still off for trying to get a profit. as the whole idea is that the money you spent on the clothes was spent months or years ago. you’ve made money back since then. the money you receive now from selling is all profit.

Idk I can’t really hate them. I should say I’m not a reseller of any kind. But I do live in a small rural town so unless I want to pay an arm and a leg for new high-quality cloths (I save up money to only buy natural fibers cause it’s better for the environment) my only option is thrifting recently deceased old people clothes or shopping online. I know what Depop sellers offer is way higher than what it was thrifted but they are honestly really cheap for me considering if I want something new of similar quality it would be more expensive. $50 vs $190 goes a long way. Plus I think people honestly forget how much clothes are donated to thrift stores. If what’s in the bins aren’t sold they are sold by goodwill to wholesalers and we get the same problem. Or some of the clothes end up shipped to low-income countries and pile on the streets. Idk, maybe it’s because I’m technically benefiting from this that I can’t say it’s the biggest deal ever. I don’t think struggling families care that much for $5 shoes worth $35 or $5 worth $350 and if they checked they’d buy the $350 shoes to sell them cause they’re struggling. I wouldn’t be surprised if struggling young people are the primary group of Depop sellers.

This has been around since the first thrift stores opened up; the issue is that a ton more people have not only jumped on the trend realizing one could make money doing this, but they've also gotten real greedy about it. What was once a leisurely pass time even for resellers has become a competitive mess... And the absolute worst is how its pushing out the people who those places were MADE to sell to (people like me, who are too poor to pay retail prices on new nice things). It used to be that you could find tons of luxury and branded things for cheap because the thrift store people didn't know what they were putting out, it meant a lot of overworked moms could afford to get "nice" things for their kids who otherwise would have had to make do with hand-me-downs only (nothing wrong with those, but anyone who grew up like that knows it feels so much better to have something new-to-the-family and entirely our own). Now, they've started to list these more luxury sort of items at higher prices to deter the resellers from buying them, but it also means that the nice thing the low-economic person would have otherwise had funding for, they now once again cannot afford even AT the thrift store. This is no good. :( I'm all for the quiet respectful ones that are making efforts to go around the whole town and maybe only taking a couple things from each location, if that. I have a friend who does that, like how my grandparents used to go antiqueing. It's the ones that are ferally grabbing up absolutely everything of any value, then listing them for extortionate prices, just because "well I saw THAT one sell for THIS price, so why can't i?" because its extortion, and its wrong. My friend has a HOBBY depop or whatever, and they only list it up to a reasonable amount (its never that high and certainly no where the sort of markups these people do, like 5-15% from what they paid maybe).

Absolutely infuriating and ruins the hunt, which is the best part 😢 My example is a dollar figure, cheaply made, and can't find it any lower than 15, which I refuse to pay. It's just frustrating because these companies are trying to throw us affordable things, and these have been the only way I could have a collection. So selfish to just take items from people that find joy in them

Agree w it allll except the vintage Dior handbag example lol. Depop is mostly curated vintage. Selling vintage Dior for 400 is not upselling or an unfair markup, it’s selling the item at market value. Curated vintage is simply selling an item for the price it is inherently worth (quality, demand, etc). I hate the scalpers but I’ll never knock the hustle!

My whole outfit’s thrifted (with the exception of some of the jewelry) god can’t rich people just leave things alone? Shit like this makes the act of making money at all feel gross, because whatever I can scrape together to go thrifting, somebody wealthy will just come by and take whatever they want. And we don’t want the same stuff. And they have more than they could ever need. It feeds into the compulsion to horde whatever I can as an individual bc I’m terrified of going without, and that means I’m not giving away resources I don’t necessarily need, when morally I’m aware that’s what I need to be doing as much as is safe and sustainable for me. The solution is simple, people need to STOP DONATINIG TO THRIFT STORES. When I have stuff I don't need, which is rare, I give it to friends/family or put it on the curb for someone to just pick up or if I'm able to, go to to a homeless shelter or church, I've even donated clothes to my local library. I get people have been doing it for so long nobody gives it a second thought but they're making money off your free items, doesn't that make you mad? Idk I'm just stick of these places, I don't even shop at them, I got to estate sales or yard sales or flea markets or Craigslist if I need stuff.

I bought a pair of Unif sandals that I'd been lusting after on Depop. The seller CLEARLY stated they were in great condition, worn once, and a size 10. Even the photos showed a size 10. What I got was a pair of size 9s, with toe prints, and deteriorating straps. I sent her a message and she never answered so I contacted depop. They tried to contact her and she never answered, so they gave me a refund bc I had evidence. Finally she answered and said "hey did you request a refund? What was wrong?" NOW YOU KNOW DAMN WELL

I also bought a pair of shorts from her and she didn't state that they had period stains like bffr. Those things happen but you need to say that??

I sell clothes/shoes/designer accessories on poshmark/mercari to help make money back to purchase new items for my closet. I can't tell you how many times I see counterfeit items being sold as authentic and I report the listings to make sure people don't get scammed. It sucks to see people get scammed over clearly fake items.
