Heathcliff is a brute, but it was they who brutalised him, think this aspect of Bronte's remarkable book deserves to be highlighted more. It is a perceptive depiction of violence and the abused becoming abuser. They twisted Heathcliff and they ended reaping what they sowed. Karma. It does not excuse Heathcliff's dreadful violence but it goes a little way to explaining. I have always loved his return, both in the book and the film, will always stay with me, he conquered his poverty.

Nellie is the one female character who challenges Heathcliff and she also called him out in an earlier scene. She is not afraid of him and of all the characters she is the one with the best inner eye. Think this may reflect some social commentary on Bronte's behalf. Ultimately, obsession and hatred consume. The book has some very memorable passages but this line was always my favourite: "We'll see if one tree won't grow as crooked as another with the same wind to twist it". Tremendous writing.

And I pray one prayer--I repeat it till my tongue stiffens--Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living; you said I killed you--haunt me, then! The murdered DO haunt their murderers, I believe. I know that ghosts HAVE wandered on earth. Be with me always--take any form--drive me mad! only DO not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh, God! it is unutterable! I CANNOT live without my life! I CANNOT live without my soul

That's the agony depicted in this book. They're both screwed up with passion for each other (Cathy and Heathcliff) .. it is a love story, believe it or not.. I used to live in that part of England, brings back memories of how beautiful it was and the events that happen..

Oh yes he does! I.also liked Tom Hardy's emotional take on the cursing scene in the 2009 version but Ralph's presentation is my favorite. It's so intense and he seems already to be staring into the abyss without Cathy. It's the beginning of the haunting of Heathcliff and he signals it so well. Gorgeous rendition. 👍

Heathcliff is really a great character because he is more realistic than prince charming. At least he doesn't pretend to be good he shows you who he is from the very beginning. Men who do that are really the ones who deserve love. They do not intentionally deceive do they? And though they put you through hell because they have conflicts, emotional problems and are damamged they are more passionate. And how much more do they appreciate the love of a good woman. The eyes don't lie.

I love the symbolism in this part. Think back to when Cathy told Heathcliff "The surest way to kill me is for you to kiss me again." And how, just after he makes his declaration, Heathcliff clutches the tree that he willed Cathy's spirit into at the beginning of the movie.

If you notice, when Heathcliff talks in his quiet wisper while he's crying, he sounds JUST like how Ralph plays voldemort! hahaha. When he talks regular in this, its not quite the same, but there's always a hint of voldy.

Healthcliff was orphaned as a child and brought from the city of Liverpool to the bleak North English moors. The one love of his life was Cathy Earnshaw and although they agreed that they were soul mates-she wished to improve herself socially & married Edgar Linton. As a result of this betrayal-Heathcliff spends the majority of his life seeking revenge on those that have wronged him-Cathy’s ghost is instrumental in bringing about Heathcliff’s madness and death towards the end of the book.

I find Isabella's story sadder than Cathy and Heathcliff's. Heathcliff is an abusive, manipulative villain! His actions as a child are somewhat forgivable due to Hindley's cruelty towards him, but as an adult I find him unbearably horrible, and his brooding sexiness in no way makes up for it! Although Isabella is foolish and spolit she doesn't deserve this physical and emotional abuse!

Something I find fascinating is the symbolic link between Catherine and trees--for example, the beginning scene when the tree branches turn into Ghost Catherine's hands, the moor scene where Heathcliff says something like "I send your spirit into that tree" and they pretend that the tree has come alive and is saying Catherine's name--and in Heathcliff's "I cannot live without my life, I cannot live without my soul" scene, he's sitting exactly where he and Catherine had sat a few years ago, and ends up holding the tree next to him that had witnessed their conversation then. I can't find any literary scholarship discussing the link between Catherine and trees, but I find it really interesting that a) Lockwood's nightmare scene sets up an undeniable connection between the trees of Wuthering Heights and Catherine's lingering spirit, and b) at least two memorable scenes that include or mention Catherine also include trees. (Other literature nerds may disagree, knowing Edgar is compared to foliage/trees a few times in the novel and also that Catherine is much more like Heathcliff than Edgar, but I personally find it hard to argue against the prominent inclusion of both Catherine and trees in the first and third scenes that provoke such emotion!)

Bravo. Interesting and wonderful observation. And Cathy's response is, "My love for Heathcliff is like the eternal rock BENEATH. A source of visible delight, but necessary. Nelly I am Heatcliff." Which may be a reference to Heathcliff and where he is seated beside and under the tree where he sent her spirit! The 'rock' representing a solid foundation. Nelly, I AM Heathcliff." Heathcliff representing his love for her and their eternal love for each other. (Also if you want to get more intricate) Heath is a purple flower that grows on the moors. Purple representing the highest form of spirit. Cliff representing ROCK. Eternal Rock= Twin Flame. :)

Its very effective the way while this film does not show Heathcliff physically abuse Hindley, you can see the man's a shadow of himself and cowering away when Heathcliff enters. You then look at what he's done to Isabella and you can kinda imagine what his previous tormentor must be going through...

Everything heathcliff became was forced upon him. He was plucked off the streets and tormented his whole childhood and then fell in love and had to watch her love someone else which is another torment added on. It's hard not to sympathize with him even though I the books he like everyone else is a monster. It's just he is the monster they created.

If you'd read the book, you'd find that there is much to pity in Heathcliff! he was unloved, uncared for, beaten and constantly humiliated, and simply for being a gypsy! - Cathy was the only person that made him feel human and important, she was his only friend and companion. Unkindness breeds unkindness (and hatred).... The hell he caused others, was only a small fraction of what he himself received. Yes, I pity him!...(especially when even Cathy rejected him in her conversation w/ nelly... )

I think the comparison is interesting. I believe both men loved her, but I think Heathcliff’s love was more passionate and powerful. At her casket, Edgar calmly walked up, rubbed her hand and gently kissed her veiled forehead and walked away. In comparison, Heathcliff feverishly breaks in, yanks away the veil and deeply cries as he grasps her body and holds it tightly to his. His sorrow is palpable.

I hear ya. I felt the same way. As excellent as Ralph is in this film, Andrew Lincoln in the 2009 version played an equally excellent version of Edgar. You couldn't but help feel pity for him and how he suffered the love and loss of Catherine. He loved her too and suffered a similar torment with her. After all, they had a child together! So yeah! Definitely relatable.

Arrgh! It's not the same in the novel! Isabella is not beaten by Heathcliff! She just becomes aware of the difference between the Grange and Wuthering and dislikes the way she's welcomed. Fienes plays good his role but Binoche seems too weak to play Cathy. And in the novel there is no mention of a kiss.... This film looks like a melodrama instead of a Tragedy....

Heathcliff threw a knife at Isabella in the book and cut her across her cheek or ear. She ran from the Heights in the dead of winter to the Grange to escape. He was a bitter, abusive jerk so the Ike and Tina Turner scene from 0:01-1:44 is somewhat valid - not 100% accurate but what adaptation is 100% accurate?

Don't mean to justify what he does but he never loved Isabella or claimed to love her she was a Linton he hated those. She could only be a pawn. Not to mention he was ill used and humiliated too but not so much after he aquires capital. What I don't like about Healthcliff is if he loved Cathy how he could mistreat her daughter who looks like her. That makes him an asshole and rather not spiritually devloped but then men like him rarely are w/out aid of a woman they depend on as moral compass.

if we have to detest heathcliff, we cannot love any character in the novel. They are all full of vice. And they pay for it!Edgar lives after Catherine.Hindley becomes a drunkard when he wife dies. Heathcliff suffers the most bitter life without Catherine. The latter despite unhappiness finds peace before everybody.Bronte didn't want us to despise her characters(who would we love still?) but she wanted to show that as much as much as we can suffer, we can also cause suffering.
