Unfortunately a lot of that comes down to lazy devs cashing in on the coomer market(understandable considering that the developer of the highly divisive Summertime Saga makes about 60k a MONTH on Patreon), but it turns out art is hard and free asset packs for naked goblins on the Daz3D marketplace are easy. On rare occasion a game will come out in that sector that's high effort, well drawn or well modeled, and either tells an interesting story or is mechanically sound, and it gets three purchases and one refund because it's not cheap, trend-chasing slop being pumped out en masse. It's honestly a shame because a visual novel I thoroughly love gets roundly ignored in broader circles because of these issues, but on the other hand I'd rather the dev stick to their guns and keep pumping out a frankly bonkers story that managed to make me laugh, cry, and confront the dark heart of familial bonds in the stretch of about three hours.

Yahtzee is me, apparently. I've never gotten the whole "ecchi tease" thing that everyone seems obsessed with. Like if I want porn, I go get some porn and then I go back to just looking at people as people. I never got the appeal of living your entire life in porn mode where all non-porn must contain a bikini babe lest your brain perceive reality for longer than thirty seconds.

@Medytacjusz7 ай бұрын
There are two separate issues here: first there's trying to turn everything into sexually stimulating material, which I dislike as well (hate when supposedly "serious" art is overly sexualised) but then the other thing is softcore porn / erotica vs hardcore porn. Like, I myself like looking at beautiful sexy people (softcore), but generally don't care as much about watching people fuck (hardcore). The tease is the porn, to me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices how absolutely random this anime clothing is, like the clothing has to be a character itself and needs 16x the detail of everything else, covered in random tibits of completely useless shit like "hey, I'm gonna put a ribbon in my arm, wear asymmetrical socks, have 3 hair clips all on the same side, wear an elbow pad specifically on only one of them and my beanie will look line a neapolitan ice cream".

That kind of random-ass fashion sense has been around in animu style games for quite a while now. As an example: Guilty Gear's fashion throughout its existence is something to behold, though there's some charm and consistency with the themes each character has, the rummage sale rejects they are. It reminds me of Kingdom Hearts attire choices: why the crap is Donald Duck's hat made of friggin' zippers? What's with all the belts on everyone and why does one have eight all over?! Nomura, what is up with your costume design?

Having played both, the base game is basically the same between Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves, but there are some key differences. WW's combat is more involved, with dodge+countering, enemy attack-countering, using the creatures you've captured to attack. You can switch characters more quickly, often being able to switch characters mid-attack, and have the previous character finish their attack while you're using the new one. This is actually really fun to use, albeit tricky to use effectively. GI instead has its elemental system, which makes combat more puzzley. This is fun to use, but it makes team composition much more important. WW's interface is basically the same but worse. It's missing quite a few quality of life features, and it often feels less responsive. The recent updates of GI have greatly improved in this way, streamlining inventory use, crafting and upgrading in many places. WW is very Unreal Engine themed, with somewhat realistic environments that don't run nearly as well on my graphics card. It can be hard to identify collectibles from environment props at times, but it's not too bad. GI has more of a Unity feel. Interactable objects are more distinct and it does well with its art style. WW's character movement gives more abilities, like stamina-free sprinting (out of combat), sprinting up walls and grappling around the place. However, this also comes with a bit of jankiness, it is certainly lacking some polish. Many areas in GI have a unique movement ability, the grappling tethers in Inazuma, the grappling four-leaf sigils in Sumeru, The swimming in Fontaine, the grappling adeptal things in Chenyu Vale (Idk the name, but they're the best grapples). There's also the upcoming Saurians in Natlan, which seems to be a beast transformation/substitution for traversal and puzzle solving. The story in WW seems pretty flat, but it hasn't had time to cook yet. It suffers a lot from translation issues. The goals of the main antagonists don't yet make sense, and there isn't much of a goal for the main character, other than dealing with their amnesia and finding their place in the world. The Story in GI is a slow burn, but it is consistently progressing. There are two main parts of the Main Story, the Character's travels through the nations of the world, and the Character's investigation into their lost sibling's past which is intertwined with the great cataclysm of the past. The goals of two main antagonistic groups are shrouded in mystery, but the groups have clear direction towards those goals. Overall, WW just lacks polish over GI, but the combat is different and interesting enough to give them both a try.

The vast majority of your points are completely valid, I'm not gonna contest them since honestly no point as you are correct. I do want to point out that having now played the Genshins and StarRails, I am extremely disappointed to say, they do (occasionally) actually have far better story and writing than any other game I've played lately, even the ones who claim to care about writing. Despite having my eyes roll around in my skull at all the painful fan service and stupidity, they still manage to produce actually moving and engaging stories not infrequently. Which is still way more often than I get from most games these days. No joke, several quest in Genshin and Star Rail (Not Wuthering Waves), have made me literally cry, in real life, tears from my face. Some quests are tragic, or beautiful, or just moving. Star Rail especially frequently makes me laugh and cheers me up, it's writing is often very Disco Elysium-esque. I interacted with a trashcan that had fallen over next to another trashcan and was treated to a tragic story of a trashcan passing before their time and the trash they left behind. These are things I value very highly when I spend time engaging in a vidyagame. So much wants to emotionally deaden us these days, I like to celebrate the things that don't. Obviously some gold emerges from other studios, usually studios named Supergiant Games. I love those when they do happen. Mostly wanted to make this post for people who genuinely wonder *why* some of these games do well, this is the reason for me. Not trying to convert anyone or anything, just provide a opinion for the curious. The other reason is the demonic monitization but that is pretty well known about. If anything I am actively disappointed that this is the state of things.

Oh, certainly. I have been playing Genshin, and off the top of my head, I got quite weepy during the Thelxie event with Freminet. I cried. It was quite touching. Problem is, there's a story with a lot to chew on, and characters who can be quite engaging, but a game like Genshin doesn't seem allowed to treat them right. Whole lore-heavy events passed long before I picked the game up. Entire characters and their stories are unavailable to me in-game because they just haven't had a banner since I started playing. Sure, I could read the wiki, or watch uploaded videos of past events, but the point to playing a game myself is to experience them myself, in my time and at my pace. Even ignoring how the plot has to go glacially slow so the game can last for years, or the characters not being able to grow into the power I'm supposed to believe they 1) had and 2) are regaining, so much of the game has to spin its wheels or put its toys back in the cupboard. Where's another in-game chapter on Klee, for instance? Nowhere; here's a chapter on Chlorinde this patch, and one coming up on a nurse in about a week maybe. You want another chapter about Albedo or something? Can't have it, we need a new character, not an old one. Frankly, I'm surprised Cyno got a chapter 2 at all, I thought they would only do that for archons, and not even all archons. I enjoy the story we get, but that feels more like passionate creatives managed to sneak some goodies out to us, rather than the goodies being the point. The fun characters or neat considerations make me sad, because all the stuff I enjoy is being held in the grasp of a monster that wants my credit card information.

I'd give it props, maybe even a chance, if it wasn't a Gacha game. The fact that a good story is trapped in a game with such a horrible form of monetization is stupid, no amount of good story will make me play a Pachinko machine.

@@danielschallert1738 Honestly these are all very valid points that I myself have felt and agree with. Guess I'm just at the "I'll take what I can get" stage right now. I actually especially agree with it feeling like some good writers get to sneak great stories in statement, I've noticed that too. edit- I will say Star Rail is... sort of better about this? I mean they aren't but the entire concept of star rail is built on the concept of what it is to be on a journey, and have people come into and out of your life while leaving huge impacts on you long after they are gone. As such, it works better, even if the fault is the exact same. edit2- Honestly I feel a bit bad because I feel like my response comes off as dismissive and it is not meant to, you just wrote a well argued comment so there isn't much I can actually say in response! I do actually really appreciate it though, I did not expect that and you have given my faith in humanity a boost. @jwithextrajj Yeah that is entirely fair and honestly the right choice. I guess my only small defense I can have of me playing is I'm not feeding money into the hate machine, though I do know just playing it is a small contribution itself. I guess I view it as taking as much as they are this way.
@raksjaja7 ай бұрын
@@jwithextrajj Honestly it really isnt' that bad...if we're talking about Genshin. The FOMO in this game is not too strong because most of the 5* (the legendaries) are often worse than the best 4* (the common characters). Of course there are some really good 5* but they're few and realistically obtainable. And the game is not so hard that you're locked behind the paywall in some challenges. So you can definitely play Genshin without spending and have fun. Only for Genshin though (maybe Star Rail too?). Now the whole gacha greediness is true for the other games. I think FGO is the worst out of them.

Yahtzee's remark "they say it's not Genshin Impact - meaning it is EXACTLY Genshin Impact" is WAY more correct than he even knows. Speaking as someone who has put a considerable amount of time in Genshin (I love gambling), Wuthering Waves is like if someone took Genshin, handed it out to all the interns at the office, and said "Can you make this again but technically legally distinct?" It wants to be the successor, the usurper of the "Shitty Gacha Anime Game" title, but somehow manages to be SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE despite copying it beat-for-beat in literally every category. This is not an exaggeration; the menus, the buttons in the menus, icons, in-game currencies, and even all the little UI elements are BLATANTLY lifted straight from Genshin for literally no reason other than to copy. Seriously, look up a comparison - it's like you downloaded a PNG of Genshin's menus and used the bucket fill tool in Photoshop to change the colors. It doesn't help that the game markets itself in advertisements on social media as "Genshin but better" - cooler traversal, better combat, more mechanics, etc. Its entire identity is specifically crafted to compare itself to Genshin and somehow it still manages to lose. Don't even get me started on the story - they started posting job offers for writers literally the day after the game went live. That should tell you all you need to know.

You know, I'm pretty sure that's a similar story to Demon's Souls being functionally rebranded Dark Souls... And then Elden Ring, really. Same basic skeleton, reused with a new set of skin. Primary difference seems to be that Fromsoft improved with each outing. Well, that, and I assume Genshin and Wuthering are made by different people.
@dominicjannazo71447 ай бұрын
That is the inherent problem of anything trying to be a Genshin killer. For all the rip off accusations you can make for Genshin, it was copying other games, for gameplay, and marketed itself as a game first and foremost. It tried to compete in a market with full price open world and action games, and saw great success. Wuwa tries to compete in the space occupied specifically by Genshin and ToF, for some reason.
