The combat experience in Poland and France showed that soldiers using methamphetamine were showing clear signs of superiority in combat. They fought without fear and, above all, didn’t get tired. The case, however, also showed the harmful effects of the stimulant. Its excessive use led to physical and mental exhaustion, as Reich Health Führer warned in 1939. These negative side effects led to the ban of Pervitin by the Reich Opium Law in June 1941.

In 2011 I met a US veteran who fought in Normandy back in 1944. He told me he one time came across a POW German officer who, and these are his words, "had a wide, toothy grin with bloodshot eyes." I then asked him if he had ever heard of Pervitin (he said no). I explained to him what it was and what it was used for. He then looked and me and said that before he was sent home in 1945 some of his buddy's pressured him to try some. Told him they were Lifesavers. He didn't take them.

U.S. soldiers used benzedrine, another form of speed. The tablets were in every enlisted man's kit. It's not something often shown in WW2 films, but it was absolutely vital, especially during long battles. This is why benzedrine became so popular with the Beat Generation in the late 40's and 50's, as a lot of soldiers became addicted to it and there was a huge black market for it. Writers like Kerouac used it constantly, as they found it could keep them writing for days.

There was the one Finnish soldier who was running, actually skiing away from the Russians. He was getting very tired and thought he could take a couple of tabs. Problem was, they had froze into on big chunk, so he ate them all. That put him on a crazy trip that lasted a few days. He saw dancing bears and skied right through Russian camps. He eventually came down and found his way back to his side of the lines.

Yes! Although, the heightened sense of awareness and confidence only works at first. Eventually, drug addicted soldiers become delerious, distracted, unfocused, and are just looking for their next fix. This is probably why they did so good in Poland and France, early in the war, but then everything turned by the time the Soviet campaign began.

And there was no "blitzkrieg on meth". The pills were for drivers and transport pilots only. And even then they only got 2 or 3 pills. The amount sounds large only until you remember how many soldiers took part in the battle fo France. This annoying legend can be traced to one person, Norman Ohler who realised that war memoirs sold well, rspecially if you add something 'scandalous'. He pulled the story out of his arsch and people are still parroting it decades later. I can understand when the internet wasn't such a ubiquitous thing that no one bothered to check. it would've been a slow undertaking. But it's been debunked for two decades now so no one has any excuse of spreading thus misinfomation.

The allies also had their own version after they discovered crashed stuka planes with pervitin cases. Before that nobody could explain how stuka pilots were able to maneuver their famous stuka dive without passing out and pervitin was the answer. When Allied scientists discovered that, they were quick to replicate it to make their own version and for a long time durin WWII both sides were high as a kite on it until it was gradually taken out, at least from the public eye, because their side effects after years of abuse became too clear and unavoidable.

Passing out or falling asleep into unconsciousness in the water has the highest chance at killing you. Especially in Atlantic or cold water. Heck, even in the Pacific if the water is at 67F/19-20C it will just take hours to lower your core temp and kill you instead of less than an hour. It's why "Go-Pills" are still in these cases whether shot down and evading the enemy for 3 days straight where you can't get any rest or ditched out in the drink.

Allies used benzedrine, Axis used meth. Both sides used stimulants to extend the ability to fight longer and go without sleep without losing performance. It wasnt known how abuse could cause psychosis(it was known but not thought to be as serious as it actually is) and people to do things they might not do normally. I think you will find that "our" side also took similar substances in WW2, and are probably still issued to this day. Ive never used meth (or any other drug), but I was on Duromine for about a month in 2020, a weightloss drug, which is essentially derived from meth. I found myself incredibly focused on my tasks at work, to the point of zoning out. I didnt get distracted, bored or tired. I can understand why a lot of people use meth and and similar substances. I also read about this housewife who used meth and found that she was able to keep on top of everything (keep the house clean, kid fed, etc) while she was under the influence. Let me be clear, I am in no way endorsing, condoning or approving of meth use. It is very addictive , and in the long term, any producitivty gains in the short term can be wiped out by all the usual symptoms.

Up until 2017, US Air Force (and potentially other military branches) prescribed meth to pilots for long endurance flights or for critical missions. Also, back in WW2, American and British soldiers got high using cocaine and Benzedrine, an amphetamine from 1930s, the american equivalent of Germany's Pervitin. But this video makes you believe them germans cheated on WW2 or something and that's why they won so easily in the beginning.

@Honda Havoc In 1933 there were 9.3 million Jews in Europe, which constituted about 60% of the global population at the time. Most of these Jews lived in Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia (all 3 under the USSR at the time). Almost all of these territories rich in Jewish people came under German occupation. No one claims the holocaust killed 6 million German Jews. The holocaust killed 6 million Jews from Germany, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Norway, Denmark, and Italy. It's illegal to question the holocaust because only a fascist would do so. Regardless, this video wasn't even about the holocaust.

They were probably using some of the maneuvers that I would use when in complete control of characters I don't care about(see XCOM with mind controlled or bonus soldiers or any RTS game). So lets say they are behind a tank getting fired at, you might see them run out from both sides of the tank at the same time while shooting at you. Such an action would normally not happen because generally people don't want to die, but in that drugged up state they don't care. Moreover the meth is helping them perceive the world faster too, so while your squad might be gunning down one of those guys, the other one who ran out the other side can instantly see where you are while tossing grenades and firing exactly where he needs to. These actions could actually take out your whole squad from just 2 German soldiers and the effect would be debilitating on morale. Couple that with the Germans never seeming to get tired and it wouldn't be surprising that whole platoons would start fleeing in terror. Just to put a cherry on top of it all... Meth also removes your sense of pain, so stabbing these guys probably does nothing in the short term and certain bullet wounds are also probably like shooting a zombie where you have this guy who gets shot in the torso 5 times and is STILL charging you while firing(because by sheer luck all 5 bullets missed his heart, lungs, and major arteries preventing him from passing out). Even in a video game that is an enemy I would do everything to avoid fighting and in an FPS I would rage quit calling it bullshit.
@setcheck67
@setcheck67 Жыл бұрын
@@MNM-lq9te It's a product of it's time. Guns back then weren't that accurate so if you had lack of fear these guys had you might actually be able to charge a defensive line and survive. It wasn't until we get near perfect accuracy guns that such acts were truly suicidal. Playing some of the older FPS's based in world war 2 you can see why moving really fast and doing YOLO stuff could actually work. It's just really hard to get the shots to land that you need.

Meth was insanely huge in the German hierarchy. Makes the blitzkrieg tactic the Germans utilized make a lot of sense. We still utilize blitzkrieg in the US for our tank warfare, notably in desert storm and desert shield. It was impossible to stop with tank to tank battle (with our higher tech tanks) so the opposition buried their tanks and used them as turrets and we responded by blowing up anything with a heat signature. Unfortunately we killed our own men in the process. Was also heavily utilized by many pilots. But as a pilot myself who has taken them I don’t think it’s cost effective.

The brightest candle burns faster! You can get some good performance for a day or two but then need excessive down time. So it is not necessarily of military benefit for campaigns longer than that unless you can rotate the troops.

The story of the 40 Chasseurs Ardennais holding the K-W line not only fighting whilst massively outnumbered but also against potentially meth'd up Germans just got way cooler

Well, I'm almost 100% sure they were also "on performance enhancing drugs" whatever it is, that French took - especially, since they were so outnumbered. It takes nothing from them, because it's still insane that they did that, but it's not as black and white as media point it out with drug use in WW2.

It seems like Pervitin is useful for shorterm episodes, but not longterm engagements. You could send in a wave of high soldiers and then cycle in a second wave of high soldiers while the first wave crashed after the drug wore off.

Everybody always says that hip firing a light machine gun is stupid, but the German manual for the Army back then actually trained them to use an assault grip for MG34, which was basically hip firing... but they use the shoulder sling instead of the bipod to hold on to, which is I think how the Marines train how to shoot from the shoulder, you wrap the sling around your left arm and then pull that taught with the rifle into your shoulder so it's like an extra angle of Leverage that keeps the gun more steady, that's how I shoot I use an AK, or better yet a Mosin, and iron sights, and at a hundred yards you can put a quarter on the f****** group almost.. Sub-MOA Panzer I and II are very fast and light, so that's where the pervitin originally was used, so they could drive at high speeds, for long hours, in combat conditions... especially in France, where they got ahead of the French tanks, and ran over the troop's roadblocks...

It is very stupid, in virtually all cases you can simply brace the gun on something where you actually can do something. Just shoulder-firing the MGs is about as easy as hip firing them and comes with the added benefit of even better sense of where you actually are shooting

You’re right, using the environment to brace a weapon is what was being described. Not a method of holding a weapon freeform when no object exist to readily brace a weapon. Such as a field, open hallway or large empty space in general. I can’t imagine why a military with a tactical divergence favouring assault and rapid movement would ever want to consider a method of self bracing a large weapon to allow the operator to continue movement free of environmental reliance. It’s almost as if the German doctrine encouraged foreword momentum at the cost of static defence.
