A World War Two Russian Yak-3 fighter formates on a 'lend-lease' Curtiss P-40 and attacks an enemy held airfield. Seen from the in-cockpit view of the 'Russian' pilot during a display at a New Zealand Warbirds airshow held at Ardmore Aerodrome, Auckland, New Zealand.

I really love the YAK-3 because of the cockpit layout. The positioning of all instruments is perfect. And what an outstanding rebuild of this fighter. Very very nice. Thanks for sharing a great time in the air.

The Yaks had one of the best cockpit layouts, simple clean and straightforward. Only other plane that came close was the Fw190 for simplicity. The Yaks were incredible low altitude fighters, comparable to the BF109 in speed and maneuverability but were under gunned comparatively. My favourite version was the Yak 9U.

I personally dislike the fuel gauges on the wings...

Why undergunned? The most Sovjet Pilots prefered the concentrated Fire of two MG's and a Cannon. Like the Bf109 in all later Versions. And two 12,7mm and one 20/23 mm Autocannon does not Sound undergunned to me.

@PAPAAAAAAA!!! - It was against the FW190 and later BF109s, that's why the soviets liked the P-39 Airacobra and La-7 and later Yak9T so much with their 37mm, 2 x20mm and 37/45mm respectively.

@DJSbros- They also had a fuel gauge on the instrument panel, see the big yellow circle to the right? That's the fuel gauge. Perfectly situated.

@@Flagrum3 I know that the Sovjet fought against Me 109 and FW 190. But again, the Sovjet Air Force prefered Nose mounted weapons. The La7, 2x 20mm Cannons, Nose mounted The Yak 3, 2x 12,7mm MG, 1x20mm or 1x 23mm Cannon, Nose mounted. Yak 9 in all Variants, Nose mounted Guns Up to Yak 9k with 45 mm Gun. And the P39? The Sovjets removed the Wing mounted Guns, they where Happy with the one Cannon and two Maschine Guns. The Yak 3 was a quick and agile Fighter. Two 12,7 and one Cannon seems more than enough firepower if it's concentrated in the Nose. Stay health🖖

+Aeghan 'CZ' He actually asks a good question mate, since a gunsight can be turned it might as well be there without the aircraft necessarily having guns.

Yeah but have you seen those things from 40s? They are "huge". I know it can be turned. But it takes a lot of space, and it is right in the middle of your view. It just doesn't need to be there, they might have it stashed somewhere. But still, if you can take it out, why not? It takes a lot of space :D

zirgity Правда. Или вы думаете, что в распоряжении советских пилотов были бетонные полосы длиной 2 километра??? Посадка на 3 точки означает посадку на минимальной скорости, и с минимальным пробегом.

Top Twelve list of true "pilots' airplanes" among W.W. II production fighters: Yak 3 Yak 7 & 9 Mitsubishi Zero (all variants) Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa ("Oscar") Supermarine Spitfire Mk V, VIII/IX & XVI Macchi 202 / 205 Fiat G-55 Dewoitine 520 (Also must include the Heinkel He-100 though only around twelve saw actual service..) And the American Vultee P-66 Vangard while only sold for export may well also qualify. How about other Italian designs? (..If they flew as good as they looked...)? I know also of a Swedish design that looked like a cross between an Me-109 and a FW 190. FFVS J-22 but don't know the name. Prewar designs also used might include the Nakajima "Nate" and Fiat CR-42 though by mid-1942 these were considered obsolete for combat or relegated to night use.. Feel free to add more that you believe qualify. Just no "lead sleds" or "flying dump trucks" as fighters soon became in years to follow. (Bf-109F would no doubt be on the list if Adolf Gallant or Hans Marseille were living and reading. Am calling it a borderline due to demands on pilot skill and mechanical issues incl. landing gear.)
