Fun Fact about the opener: Mysterio was hiding underneath the ring with his mask off waiting for the cue to sneak attack Kurt, hence him being in a rush to get it on and not having time to get it on properly which is why he keeps adjusting it...
@bookaki4160

@Bhumi Rushing iirc he had a monitor under the ring with him for his cue and I'm guessing wearing the mask obstructed his view so he took it off

@Bhumi Rushing because he snuck into the bottom of the ring from the crowd. I'm pretty sure the crowd would figure out who he is if he wore his mask in plain sight like nothing.

@@jongon0848, while his mask would be basically a dead giveaway, it's not like he was an unknown entity...he went maskless for a good while in WCW, so people knew what he looked like (and those near the front would easily tell what was happening if a guy asked them to scoot aside so he could hop the barrier). In any case, Mysterio was still coming off his WCW run in the lead-up to this event...he signed in June 2002 and debuted July 2002 (this event was August), so he wasn't just some random new signee...

If I remember correctly, Lance Storm said that Christian and Test were concerned about backlash in their personal lives from the UnAmericans gimmick, as both lived in the US and were concerned about what friends and neighbours would think. It wasn't much of an issue for Storm because he lived in Canada, and despite living in Atlanta, Regal wasn't bothered as he 'didn't like any of his neighbours anyway'. Also, both Test and Christian were asked to cut their hair like Storm's so that all the group members looked alike. Christian was reluctant as he wanted to cut his hair eventually, but wanted the decision to have more meaning than just to fit into a stable, and he didn't want it as short as Storm's. Test was more vocal about the matter, telling Vince he didn't want to look like a 'fucking idiot'. This may or may not have been part of the reason the group was split, leaving Regal and Storm to continue as a tag team.

NerdCafe Because it would have been a foregone conclusion that Brock was going to be a huge star, he was the hottest new wrestler and signing him would be a huge get. The Rock had movies on the horizon and wasn't as valuable in the long term. Even without the title, snagging Brock was great for Stephanie in kayfabe.
@andresgc770
@andresgc770 7 жыл бұрын
Because The Rock was a Smackdown wrestler, too. So regardless of who won, the title was staying in her brand. Still, it's likely that she kayfabe assumed/hoped Brock would win, since his deal with her also included SD exclusivity for the title.

Brian I hate to break it you, but part of the reason that I hate on Lesnar now is because I saw him in his prime back in the early 2000's. He is just so one dimensional now. All he does is suplex and F5 with maybe an arm lock thrown in, but remembering how good he was makes it worse. Yeah of course he is older now and would have to scale back a little, but he shouldn't have had to scale back so much in my opinion.

My favourite ever Summerslam for sure. This was at a point when WWE had a dream roster (even though they didn't always know what to do with it), and it showed on this night. HBK's comeback could not have gone any better, and loved the opener. Th hype for the Brock-Rock match was great and Rock did a good job in making the younger guy look good. Don't have too much of a problem with the Steph-Eric segments. Think it built the Raw VS. SD feud well and them trying to get one over on each other was kinda cool.

I was at th is show and it was awesome. The crowd was hot, which made being at the show even more special. Just as a little extra note, The Rock cut a promo after the show was over. I found an old deadjournal entry I had so I know exactly what he said. Rock got the mic and said FINALLY (the arena ERUPTED with boos). FINALLY (boos) THE ROCK (boos) HAS COME BACK (boos)... IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE THE ROCK HAS COME BACK! He went to leave the ring, got back in (boos)... IF YA SMELL (boos) SING ALONG WITH THE ROCK IS OVER (boos) and he left the ring. Sorry for all the boos in parentheses, but they were important because The Rock paused every time there were boos. At that point, he was stale as a face and I remember being excited thinking maybe he was going to turn heel soon after the show, but it didn't happen. Even though nothing came from it, crowd was still really hot, even though it was only a post-show segment.

The feud between Lillian and Finkle was caused by when Bischoff sent 3 Minute Warning to silence them both during a Raw segment, Finkle shoved her in the way and ran like a coward; This led to him being nicknamed Howard the Coward for months, eventually Lillian's "friend" Trish Stratus calls him out and the mud match is made. This, of course, leads Lillian and Trish to trick Howard at Summerslam months later and thus a kick to the groan.

If I remember rightly the start of the Un Americans storyline was Storm, Christian and Test saying that innocent referee mistakes during some of their matches were part of a conspiracy against Canadians by WWE who were supposedly prejudiced against them like they believed all Americans were. So they were basically sore losers who believed WWE and Americans in general were prejudiced against them because they couldn't take losing matches and that the referees in their matches were trying to screw them out of wins and pass it off as simple mistakes.

I think we're all in agreement that this show is the BEST SummerSlam to date. As for the dubbing of Flair's normal 2001 entrance music, it's the exact same way on the Network for some reason. However, when I found the match on Dailymotion, it was unedited, so IDK if it had to do copyright issues or what.

Underrated? Stop it, he's one of the most popular and well-liked stars of the late 90's and early 2000's, he won every titles possible and is in the HOF. Definitely not underrated, you clearly don't know what it means.
