NXT started as a developmental brand. Where they helped wrestlers fine tune characters, learnt how to do proper promos etc. It was HHH'S baby, and is crazy how good it became. Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks and Bayley became known as the four horsewomen Of NXT. It's been tamed down a little since it was put on network tv. The matches on there were what got me watching after years of not bothering with it. The item you're talking about (the broom) is a kendo stick. NXT runs out of Full Sail University in Florida.

The weapon that the wrestler was using was a kendo stick. In Asian martial arts, they are used for training in place of swords. They are also used for punishments in Asia. In the mid-1990s, in Singapore, an American teenager was arrested for throwing a wad of chewing gum on the sidewalk. The judge sentenced him to multiple strikes with a "Singapore Cane" (kendo stick). The court case became an international incident between the United States and Singapore. US Justice Apartment attorneys appealed the case, and the final punishment was five strikes with a "Singapore Cane". The American teenager received his punishment, then returned to the US. In response to the news story, in the original ECW, they held a "Loser Gets Caned Match" between The Sandman and Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer lost the match, and he was hit multiple times with the kendo stick, which shocked the fans in attendance at that time. Ever since then, kendo sticks became a common weapon in American professional wrestling, since it provided extra excitement to a pro wrestling match, without doing serious harm to the recipient of the strikes from the kendo stick itself.

NXT is next level for sure. So much better than the other garbage WWE puts on. It's just not as popular because it doesn't pander to the kiddies. The performers are allowed to have good matches there instead of getting five minutes including entrances on a show to try to tell a story. Plus there's more creative freedom.

Funny enough, NXT doesn't actually stand for anything. It's basically the next generation of WWE stars, so they took the word 'next' and removed the e and you have NXT. But the NXT letters themselves don't mean anything like WWE or AEW or TNA or ROH or WCW do.
