Fun Fact: Former NASCAR president and CEO Brian France actually stole a lot of vince's marketing ideas in the late 80's and early 90's when he was trying to grow their brand as he was being groomed to take over from his father and legendary NASCAR founder "Big" Bill France. One of the most obvious forms this took was creating "heel and face" racers by playing up their antics and in some cases actively making the fans absolutely hate them. Nascar legend Darrel Waltrip was one of the unfortunate drivers who got cast as a "heel" because of the way he raced (overly aggressive and dirty) and the fans hated him so much that they would attack people in the stands who were wearing any of his merchandise, he's told a story about meeting a fan at daytona after the 1989 Firecracker 400 who was "beaten bloody" and showed him a "DW5" hat that he'd been wearing which had been slashed to pieces with a hunting knife. That particular fan told him "you know, it's hard being a darrel waltrip fan, half the people hate you and the other half want to kill you". After that meeting DW went back to his trailer sat down thought about what he'd just been told and decided to embark on what was for its time probably the greatest "face turn" a nascar driver ever made, going from hated villain to a hulk hogan like figure within the sport. He changed his driving style, stopped being an arrogant ass in interviews and started being a lot more humble with the fans, within two years her went from being the most hated driver in the sport to the most beloved figure behind only Richard Petty being voted "fan favourite driver" two years in a row and earning a huge following of die hard fans who stayed with him until 30 years later when he finally retired from public life in 2019 after 50 years in the sport as a driver, team owner, media personality and commentator.

@@OSW As a listener of jim cornette's podcast it always makes me laugh when he occasionally talks about how he's probably the most famous living person from kentucky because he doesn't know about Darrel and his brother Micheal or guys like Jim Lyons and Allen Gaines who were both big deals in race engine building and indoor motorsports (truck and tractor pulling) back in the 80's and 90's and are in the american motorsports hall of fame. Gaines's '37 Chevy wheel stander The Orange Blossom Special was so popular that Playskol actually sold a toy using the likeness and license and it was a featured truck in the 1986 Bigfoot monster truck cartoon show.
