additionally to what Karl said, one of the DERPGRU guys bought one for a 308 gun and has had nothing but issues the bipod deflects the barrel because it hits the gas block and the customer server has been horrible, absolutely horrible

Well, his cap is Varustelekas modern interpretation of the old Finnish army cap, which was in use well before the second world war. That cap in turn was inspired by the ski caps in use by, among others, the army of Austria-Hungary. Which means Ians cap technically is 100+ years old kit.

Same here, tho my fave was Karl winning his division with a repro-Winchester design from the 1870-80s, vs 5 WWI-style bolt actions (QED on the Winchester as assault rifle of it's day), don't think Ian was in same division at all, testing out some completely different nuance of firearm history for that match. Documenting the USE of historical firearms in simulated settings to augment the written documentation is actual historical research, imho, and that was my major.

I just received my WWSD rifle yesterday and oh yes, it does live up to the hype, handling wise. I’m taking it to the range this weekend to put it through it’s paces and of it shoots as well as it handles, it’s going to be phenomenal. To think this went from concept to production in just about a year, and during the height of COVID no less, is a stunning accomplishment. Everyone should proud of the work they have done.

It does shoot as well as it handles. I have a homebrewed “WWSDish” rifle (I elected for a 20” barrel) and I can clear a 10 rd 100yd standing stage without taking a break (par time is 2 minutes to encourage one to rest a breath or two every two shots or so, the course was designed with Garands in mind).

I got to handle one a bit on Tuesday while I was picking up my new LWRC IC DI. It is incredibly light without feeling flimsy. The handguard is a thing of beauty. It might be my favorite part of the rifle. I really want to hear about rapid fire testing and heat accumulation/dissipation from the pencil barrel to the handguard. There is a fair bit of space between the handguard and the barrel. Ought to help keep things a bit cooler overall. Without extensive, potentially destructive testing, I don't think for a minute I would consider this a go to war rifle. That being said, I still love pretty much everything about it. I'm definitely going to get a WWSD 2020 at some point.

I remeber that Ian had originally wanted a more DMR setup, and Just we-watched the video yo guys did on LVPOs a few years back, and concluding the Red Dot the best match for the application of the WWSD. It is really cool to see that you guys added the Magnifiers as I think that helps bridge the gap.

I'm in the process of doing an AR build, and I'm pretty much ending up with a slightly modified DIY WWSD rifle. Major difference is that I'm using a gunner profile faxon barrel with a .223 Wylde chamber (gunner profile is a mix of pencil and government), and my lower isn't a monolithic polymer lower. Already had an aluminum lower so I'm rolling with that right now. Bit unintentional to be honest, I wasn't originally going for a something this similar, just kind of ended up in almost the same place as a WWSD rifle. I guess watching inRange started to nudge my thinking in a different direction. And I'm ok with that, got new data, changed my conclusions.

Hi Ian, I live in the UK so, although I have a firearms licence, I could never own the WWSD as centrefire semi autos are banned here (and pistols). I wish you the best of luck with the project and hope is it a commercial success - on-top of it's already critical success. I have been following your channel for many years and have learnt an immeasurable amount from it, both historical, cultural and practical. I have recently finished restoring a 1944 N4mk1 Lee Enfield.

While I don't have a WWSD rifle, I do have two of the KE Arms KP-15's. They make really nice builds and don't feel cheap or flimsy. I put a 16" 5.56 upper on one and a 16" 300BLK upper on the other. I wouldn't hesitate to pack one around if I had to. Great job by Ian! His shooting has really improved since the early days of InRange.

I built a very similar rifle in 2011 on a Cav Arms MK2 lower. There were no affordable pencil barrels available at the time so I turned the blank myself, chambered it in .223 for accuracy, and milled the free float aluminum handguard to take rail off I was not using (this was before M-LOK, so eeeeverything was quadrails) and also milled the barrel nut and hardguard to make clearance for an Osprey piston conversion kit instead of standard gas. My first AR. It was a fun gun to run about with, being just a little over 6.5lb. I was even tempted to get it registered. Some years later I noticed a crack developing in the magazine well and so I built and registered (two stamps in fact) a more traditional rifle, and it has not let me down yet. The Cav gun still has a place in the safe as a good training rifle (and possibly for more sentimental reasons) but it just did not hold up under even my medium rigorous handling. I am definitely interested to see what improvements your lot have made to the receiver and if it will hold up as well as other polymer lowers do now.

I have to agree with Ian that a WWSD is my favorite rifle and the one I'd grab in a get out of Dodge scenario. I took mine out hunting this year because my son needed to borrow my .308 bolt gun. The light weight made it much easier to carry when hiking and I used it to make a heart shot on a whitetail at 200 yards. Ammo was Federal Fusion 62 gr. bonded soft point. Couldn't have done any better with the bolt gun.

Just got my WWSD in Tuesday - very impressed with the lightness and balance. Immediately replaced the birdcage with a linear comp, which added about 5 oz. to the muzzle end lol. Put on a Holosun green dot as a sight. Went to the range - indoor - with three loaded mags - Pmags- to sight in and try out next day. I'm new to dots, so it did take most of the ammo to get at least semi sighted in. Today's ammo prices and availability suck - they limit practice so much. I did have a couple of failures to feed - not sure if it was the mag or just a need to break in. Overall, I'm happy with it - especially in comparision with my first AR. It was a Sig M400 - a fine quality rifle but heavy as a brick and so muzzle heavy. The great - weight and balance, the carbon fiber tube, the radically flared magwell, the trigger. The not so great - those ftf but hopefully that was, as I said, a mag or break in issue. Worst part is it'll be a while before i get out to shoot it again as I plan to concentrate on building up the old ammo supply.

I think you're spot-on about the red dot, the pistol seemed to be his Achilles heel. Those ejected rounds flying out of shot have always saddened me; I hope somebody picks them up before they get stepped on. The crack about the FAMAS in the backpack was too funny, I think that might have been the highlight of the video for me! I don't know why my responses to your statements are all out of order, but here's another: 2:59 For the first two or three shots it almost sounded like a distorted beep to me, as if the shot timer was beeping in response to the shots. I was tré confused.

I've been looking for magnifiers. I'm not so thrilled about HoloSun being Chinese, and I've even worked for Leopold Stevens here in Oregon.
