In the third installment of the series, I answer more frequently asked questions of what I look for when hunting for a vintage used watch on eBay. Today I use the example of a Tudor Prince Date and Day-Date and I share examples of good listings, bad listings, favourite sellers. as well as a double surprise unboxing at the end.

I love this channel. TGV is so polite, so jovial. I own bullshit cheapass watches, but I don't care, I just enjoy watching someone who acts like a perfect gentleman. And I've learned so much about watches that I impress my friends with my newfound knowledge. Hats off to you, sir.

I only have cheap watches too, but it`s an interesting subject/hobby/passion, and I personally always enjoy watching someone knowledgeable with a certain field just, nerd out real hard and do what they do best. In particular if they`re able to explain things well, and go from very basic, to deep deep, real advanced stuff. no matter what it is mostly, as long as it`s not things like art, because it`s so subjective, and art critics are just the worst. Literature, movies, paintings etc have the most snobby pretentious people in the world talking about them, music also to some degree, but not as much. Technology however, all things mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electronics, analog or digital, biology, chemistry, astronomy, I mean, just physics in general..? They don`t suffer from that "critic fetish" and although watches very often are pieces of mechanical art, and a lot of expression goes into their creation, and I do care about how that`s accomplished, either as a function being a result or the expression or the other way around, there`s also a very objective truth to every one of them, like any other piece of technology. That means I can be just as interested in any timepiece for it`s function, as another person can be about it`s expression, and that alone is fascinating :) There are so many knowledgeable people out there, who are passionate and well spoken, who share and educate, and if the teacher is good, I will always be a good student. Sorry about the rant, it kinda just happened xD

Sorry if I missed it, but I think one really important part of buying a watch on eBay is simply doing a Google image search on the reference number listed in the auction. If you don't have the watch sitting in front of you this is invaluable. Compare every nuance against true photos of the reference.

Hi TGV. I recently bought off Ebay a early 1980s Croton "presidential" style watch for 20 dollars. The reason it was 20 dollars was because the winding stem was broken. So when I got it in the mail I took it to my local jewelers and got it fixed for around 40 dollars. I love it a lot and just wanted to know if I got a good deal or not. Thanks, Aj

Could be wrong here, but I think the JDM Presage Seiko is enamel dial. Whatever of this, I liked it. The Nano was cool, too. I've used eBay a lot and it was good to see that I've got similar research practices to you when buying via that medium. Seller ratings, similar items, listing information and other outside eBay searches to check on movements and the like. I also compare prices from several sites before bidding or buying. Anyway, the information was valuable, especially to those who are flirting with watch buying on eBay. So far, I have avoided any disasters. Hope this trend continues!!

Cant wait for the reviews. That black seiko stole my heart. But a question regarding buying a pre-owned watch online... how do I know if the parts weren't played with? I get the 100% rating but is it enough when purchasing an expensive watch like a Patek?

Great videos to get us started. I am a novice. So basic questions like how do you check serial numbers? Who do you talk to at the brand or where else. Or what do you do when you have a problem. If you buy the watch and it is not what you thought....more of that would be good to get the novices more comfortable to start buying online....I guess a part 4, 5, 6 he he ... Hey thanks for the wonderful videos. Because of them I am searching and learning and getting some watches. Not grails in any way yet...need to learn much much more. I wish the brands helped in the secondary market also. Maybe it a misperception but they seem unapproachable to me. They need to show they care for their customers, even in the secondary...maybe the decide to buy the grails in the dealer....Having a good time discovering all this...Thanks

Great Video, These Tudors are a great buy. I just bought a Tudor 90800 Jumbo 38mm (w/o bracelet) still with chamfers, only slightly polished under $1000 USD. One thing I failed to check was a close up of the movement. I saw the correct rotor and Tudor markings however, I didn't realize what ETA movement was in the watch. With much sadness, there was a movement swap so I had to return.

As a long time Ebay buyer and having being involved in several public service businesses I take with a grain of salt the the positive and negative feedback scores. I see people who have excellent customer service delivered to them who just cannot be satisfied and still complain. An excellent example of this is when I wet out with a friend to a restaurant and he did not like the server. Even tho the food was great, the service was top notch, he still called the owner the next day and made up a story that had that poor woman fired. So much for reviews. Just the same, I enjoyed the video.

Really solid buyers guide! Whenever I buy vintage watches my rule of thumb is: if the watch have been polished it's a no no. I buy vintage watches because I want the vintage feel, if I wanted a shiny watch I could just go to an AD and buy a new one. Also with polishing, the value of the watch decreases, both in money and collectible value.

Tristano, thanks for this very informative video, especially since I’m seriously considering my first pre-owned watch purchase on EBay. I’ve been taking notes as I watch your EBay related posts, hoping to make a successful first purchase. I certainly feel much more confident as I revisit the EBay posting with this information at hand! 👍👍👍 So far, it looks promising. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Also, I had an idea for another question to ask regarding automatic watches. “Has it been on a winding machine, and, if so, how much?” I understand it can prematurely wear out a watch if used excessively. Make sense? Dave

A quick question: @18 51 you mention that the watch band is gold-plated (we can see the fold has rubbed off) 'unlike the bezel and the crown. But the bezel and crown can't be solid gold, surely?

Some references are different of course, but like mine, they are solid. otherwise they would show the same type of wear as the bracelet. Thank you, Best regards, TGV

+tommydeadwood I'm too damn picky and the one I want right now is a Sinn 104. Being a college student I have to save quite a bit for one. I have thought about buying a cool little Seiko 5, but then I just think that's $100 less towards the Sinn. So I'm without a watch...

greetings, TGV, kind of an oddball question, but how did you fit a nato onto the casio f91-w? i got one recently along with a few natos but they seem to be too thick to fit properly between the case and the bars. I've tried looking around the internet on how to do it with no solid results. any thoughts? thanks.

I must admit that I love to buy from Japan on eBay as well (Korea can be good as well for some items). I have bought and sold some bizarre items, and Japan is by all means a "Gold Mine." I sold a bunch of Chinese snuff bottles to some store there, as well as some Chinese posters selling batteries and Proctor and Gamble soap (they love the big brands or anything Japanese). They gave me good reviews and were cool. Similarly, when buying from Japan I have gotten great stuff (equipment, incense, art, watches, ...). I am curious how many of us watching The Urban Gentry have transacted on eBay and/or Chrono24?

eBay is both a treasure trove and wasteland. I love the vintage watches, though, and if I'm I'm in doubt, I go through a series of questions such as: is this out of my price range (or do I love it enough to say it's a once in a decade or more must-have), would I be comfortable wearing it, does it need any work and if so at what cost and who will do that for me? I don't own any expensive watches and don't think about them when I'm perusing eBay. I've recently picked up three Timex wind-ups because I liked their looks, and a Hamilton bump automatic. I love the vintage Omega's and Hamiltons, the Tudors, the Longines and Tissots. I've thought about new watches, maybe an incognito Rolex like the Air King, or a SeaMaster, or a moon-phase Ball. Anyway, off subject here, eBay has sellers of all abilities, from the pro's to somebody just trying to sell some relative's watch, and everybody in between, so some of these sellers don't know what information to list. Today I emailed a seller asking what kind of movement the watch had, and what the case size was. Keep up the great vids!!!

Bought a watch off ebay last week, got a Seiko Sumo SBDC031 after searching around and got it for £359 ($474) saved me a lot of money buying it from a UK retailer for around £488 ($645) Really happy with it but must stop buying watches until I can afford a Rolex Submariner Date!

The SARX027 indeed has an enamel dial. There might be slight discoloration around the edge of the date window due to the firing of the enamel and the discoloration is unique to each individual piece and this is seen as an asset. It is definitely a retro design with its cupcake crown, unbalanced poire hands and chubby Arabic numerals. Oh and the reason the deployant clasp is oriented in reverse is so that the clasp opens more naturally as if it were on a bracelet.
