Yes, you can dilute it with deionized water, and if you add NaOH (sodium hydroxide) a drop at a time, a blue precipitate will form, Cu(OH)2. Copper hydroxide. You can test the liquid after several drops at a time with litmus paper to know when it's turned basic. Add more water and heat, stirring until it boils, and the Cu(OH)2 will turn into CuO, copper(ii) oxide. Filter this, and use H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) to drain it into a beaker, then add zinc, which will dissolve and leave you with pure Cu.

Wow that's a lot of NO2, you can prevent the formation of NO2 by using hydrogen peroxide in with the nitric acid, to oxidise the NO2 back to HNO3 as its formed. This way you get more efficiency from the acid, able to react with a larger amount of material.

The blue green at the start is not copper nitrate-- it is a nitrato complex. The copper 2 ion is blue and is formed when the water is pulled into the reaction vessel.You can find the equation on this video and a literature citation which explains details of the reaction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpWxqqikfdqhqtk

Did I send you PDF of the publication concerning this demo? Here is a portion from the article. On the basis of the spectra of the solution and the reported equilibrium constants, the equation for formation of the green solution is [Cu(H2O)6]2+ (aq) + NO2- (aq) = [Cu(H2O)5( NO2)]+ (aq)+ H2O(l)

The green material produced in the first flask is not copper nitrate. Copper nitrate or rather the [Cu(H2O)6]2+ ion is blue. The green color is due to a copper II nitrato complex. Exact structure of these complexes are not known,but equation below is a likely possibility. Equations Cu + 4 H3O+ + 4 NO3− → [Cu(H2O)4(NO3)2] + 2 H2O + 2 NO2 [Cu(H2O)4(NO3)2] + 2 H2O → [Cu(H2O) 6]2+ + 2 NO3−

You should use low concentrated nitric acid in the second flask because the nitrous gas can disolve in it. It will absorb much more than plain water.
@weiming199812 жыл бұрын
Nope. The Cu2+ ion, if ingested, will induce vomiting, so poisoning from ingestion is very rare. You would get a rather sick stomach though. Not exactly the best way to boost mana.

What is the tube called that is transporting the water from one flask to another? How and what is causing the water being absorbed by the tube that goes from one flask to another?
@declan.fleming9 жыл бұрын
Collectively we just call these delivery tubes. The water is drawn back in in a process of "suck back" - the air in the main flask gets quite hot during the reaction and expands. As the reaction subsides, heat is lost to the surroundings and the gas begins to contract, drawing the water back up the tube as the pressure drops. This would only happen a little but for the water then dissolving the NO2 gas in the flask .. as gas particles dissolve in the water, the pressure drops still further and draws even more water in, dissolving more gas .. etc etc.
