It occurs to me that Tsukasa probably didn’t have very many friends before he met Emu, Rui, and Nene. He only seems to have second hand friends through Saki. But then when Saki was in the hospital all the time he got really lonely and put all his energy towards building up his skills as an actor for Saki’s sake. It’s not as if Saki was a burden on him, but now that she’s better, he can start to truly live for himself now.

I agree! It feels like Tsukasa didn't want to make friends while Saki was sick, so that he wouldn't make her feel even more alone. I'm not saying that Saki was a burden either, but her illness and Tsukasa's desire to help his sister definitely deprived Tsukasa himself of a normal life. Though he wasn't even the sick one out of the two :(
