Can also happen at lakes when swimming and water gets in your nose, if you get a headache go straight to emergency. Try to convince them it may be the amoeba thing because it is supposed to be treatable if caught in time.

This one is horrific because when I was younger, I used my Neti Pot every day for years with straight tap water. I refuse to ever use it again, even with boiled water, because I am paranoid about it. This story doesn't make it clear, but this is a different brain eating amoeba than the one that kills in a few days. As the story stated, she lived for a year with the amoeba in her brain.

- Distilled water - 3 drops of 2% Lugol’s iodine - A pinch of sea salt I just did it for the first time ever in my life because my sinus was getting pretty congested from what first began as the sniffles... it cleared it right up 100%. Ive just had endoscopic sinus surgery and a nasal polypectomy. My surgeon said ive to rinse 2 times a day for the next 5 weeks, and then every day for the rest of my life to hinder nasal polyps return. My pharmacist told me just fill the bottle from the shower head. i couldn't believe such advice, especially when our pathetic council, and worse government add chlorine to tap water. And if 3 waters, co governance goes ahead in NZ, councils will lose control of their water treatment.

I used too much salt when I did irrigation and choked giving me the scare of my life. So if you are going to do nasal irrigation please make sure you don't put too much salt in. Unfortunately that put me off so I got a nasal spray sinusoothe and that keeps my sinuses clear. I used to have terrible congestion due to allergies that also caused sinus infections but this not only keeps my passages clear but also has cured my infection and my allergies don't seem to be as bad. I also haven't caught a cold, flu or even COVID since I started using this over two years ago. But I still take COVID precautions. maybe I've just been lucky.

I think it's one thing for water to go up our nose but it another to flush our sinuses. How many times have you been to the beach or public pool and had water up your nose? Everything should still be in tip top shape. I think this is one of those freak situations. Like putting in a contact lense without drying your hands and getting something like this in your eye. *not a doctor*

Very little water travels up your nose in the shower. Very different from unnecessarily shooting fluid into your olfactory system that is connected directly to the brain structures of the limbic system. Any Doctor advising this is being paid handsomely by product makers.

@unusualattempt

@@simaseckin4850 Where exactly am I wrong? Can you be more specific? Allow me to explain my comment more. 1. I used the beach and public pool example because they're usually packed full of nasty stuff, especially public pools. I never meant that these incidents are isolated to the beach and public pool. 2. How many other children who have played in a private pool (in-ground and above ground) got water up the nose or something and came out fine? Again, one of those freak situations. For example (but not limited to) burying yourself in the sand. I've done it, my family has done it, and low and behold we come out fine. Some teen buries himself in the sand and gets flesh-eating bacteria. Another example, I wear contact and after washing my hands I don't always dry them before putting in contacts. And once again, I'm fine. No issues. Lady gets that water in her contacts and almost loses an eye. These are freak situations. While they can be rare on a broad spectrum, that doesn't mean they're impossible to experience. This is why they have recommendations on how the product should be used. Like using boiled water over tap water. Or the product recommendation of not using a tampon past 8 hours or you'll run the risk of TSS. It is not a 100% chance of getting TSS after 8 hours of use, but there is not a 0% chance of not getting it.

I think this woman was particularly unlucky and she had some lesions in her sinuses, and that helped the amoeba infecting her. If the mucosae of the sinuses are healthy, such a risk should be basically impossible to become an illness. We have many nasty things coming inside our sinuses, we "breathe" a lot of viruses every day! Rinsing the mucosa lowers the bacterial "charge" on its surface. People who use the nose rinsing after a surgical operation should certainly use distilled water or bottled water, or boiled water. People who do it for general health should not worry that much, the mucosa protects you. You rinse your hands with normal water, but use a disinfectant if you have a wound. Having a wound makes all the difference. I personally warm up tap water with my microwave oven, 40 seconds. Salt and microwave both have a bacteriostatic effect. Using distilled water is certainly safer. Boiling the water for 10 minutes is certainly overkilling. By the way, 4 minutes microwave oven at high Watt kills any bacteria you can throw at the water, so if you want to boil, that's faster (microwaves make the water inside the bacteria "boil" from inside, breaking the cellular wall and killing if, just like it happens with eggs).

Man, here I am opening my first Neti Pot. Now I don't want to do it. I am going to store it away for now. I am currently in the process of getting scans. I am on bed rest for two weeks now. I am thinking I have sinus and migraine problems. I had strange health problems since 2008. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure when I graduated in 2008. I had so many symptoms and I went to many doctors, and still have symptoms. Right now is a new symptom. I am dizzy and lightheaded since February 9 now. I had blood tests done and the doctor said on Friday I am a little dehydrated, which does not make sense to begin with because I drink lots of water. I went back on Monday yesterday, I told him it feels like I am rocking back and forth on a boat, and he said it sounds like vertigo. I quit my amlodipine and switched to propranolol this past weekend. So far, the propranolol is doing better maintaining my blood pressure. I am still lightheaded. I suspect it is sinuses because when I went to the dentist, they kept saying I have serious sinuses in my head. I had no clue sinuses could be this bad. I wonder if these are the root of all my health problems since 2008. I don't have any pain though. I have a cardiologist appointment on February 27 next week, and my ENT otolaryngologist appointment is this coming February 24 on Friday. I do have tonsils that have been swollen since 2018 or 2017, but the reception girl said they only do one case at a time, so I am going in for this vertigo and sinus problem first. I can't get work done and this is my first major job that has gone over a year on contract. My boss said I could go on disability, but I told her I will try to work next week. I don't know of anyone else is having these symptoms. It came out of nowhere. The vertigo and dizziness. I also searched something called cervical instability as a possibility. It can come from poor posture and being on computers, phones, and laptops too much. I am leaned over on my bed on my laptop now. I have been more ever since my desktop went down in 2021. It can't be from lack of exercise because I exercise everyday.

It's not rare and we need to do something about it
@Ballaholic17
@Ballaholic17 2 жыл бұрын
It's very very very very very rare.. only 200 cases in the US in 60 years and it can only be contracted through your nose.. usually warm water that's recycled and not filtered.. or in lakes, ponds etc.. you have to catch it early.. that is anyone's only chance at surviving this but the main issue is the early symptoms are headache and vomiting which are very common.. then seizures, red rashes and hallucinations the next wave of symptoms.. the problem with that is it's too late at that point cause the amoeba has reproduced and already started eating at brain tissue which causes permanent damage. Dr's will usually put you in an induced coma then ice your whole body down to lower core temp and put the patient on a cocktail of antibiotics and anti fungal medications.. the coma slows down brain activity which also slows the amoeba from eating tissue in the brain and reproducing at the same time allowing the medication to goes to work. Honestly most people's immune system fight it off before it does any damage. But if you just got over being sick or had surgery,, anything that would lower your immune system technically would put you at higher risk but again extremely low chance to get this and in almost every case it's a child because you literally have to breathe in water up your nose to get it.. there's no other way to get this parasite

Serious question, can I just use bottled distilled water? That's what I've been using for the last few times without any problems. I wash the neti pot with dish detergent and a paper towel (no sponges!), and rinse it well. I dry most of the water out and pour bottled distilled water in and microwave it for about 25 seconds. The first time I did it this time (I've used neti pots years before), the water wouldn't come out, and I felt incredible pressure in the center of my forehead and behind my right eye. I tried it again the next day after using a plain saline nasal spray, and the water ultimately passed through. However everything that comes out, whether it be through the neti pot or through sneezing and blowing my nose, comes out clear. I've had disgusting yellow and occasionally little brown fhlegm- or mucous? - that I spit up by hacking it up, (and, sorry to be gross) or pull down with a q-tip from the back of my throat. I can see it's coming from my nose, because it's dragged down from above my throat. I feel like there's a blockage that's preventing me from blowing a build up through my nose. Earlier, I was able to hear movement in my nasal passages (light clicking sounds that I also can feel when I lift my head in the morning. I've had this noise as long as I remember). But in the last few days since the pressure's increased, I don't have the nouse in the morning, but hear it periodically throughout the day while I'm up. Yesterday, since my ears feel slightly clogged, I took a q-tip and put a little 90% alcohol on it and touched the inside of my ear, and heard the click noise. Odd! That's new. One more thing to mention is that I smell a horrible imaginary odor after I use the neti pot or saline spray. It lasts about an hour and goes away. I had the same odor when I had covid last month (I only had a slight fever for a couple of days), but last month the odor was also in my taste buds, and altered almost everything I ate (it was only the following day after the 2-day fever) I feel the pressure is not going away, but the post nasal drip has decreased significantly. It's only in the morning. I've also began sleeping without a pillow, so my head isn't elevated and it can't drip down my throat all night. I've also started using a small massager with heat on my face forehead & nose). I'm not sure if it's been helping. So the two questions I have are: 1) Do you think I need to go to the doctor's? 2) Do I need to boil the bottled distilled water for use in the neti pot? Thank you.
