This is one of the best budget builds for a XJ I have seen. That is very well thought out. Now I have a few ideas from you I need to think about! I really hope you end up liking it and get to enjoy time in it. If you don’t, it wasn’t for lack of trying or effort. From the sliding bed, to the flip up doors, to the drop down utensil shelf, it looks very functional. Very impressive. By the way, I saw you slid the driver’s seat up to sleep, can you also tilt the back rest forward a bit too? That would give you another couple of inches if it wasn’t already. As long as you have a good mattress, then I would think you could be comfortable. I sleep on my side too and it takes some thick padding to make it so your hip bone doesn’t hit the floor. Once I took care of that, sleeping was great in my Jeep. Thanks for the shout out. I appreciate it. I am glad you got some ideas to start with....and then you made them better! Great build. I look forward to seeing how it works out. EDIT: Since you have the skills, could you possibly extend the seat track a few inches somehow? If you end up to not like camping in the Jeep, my guess is it would be due to the bed length. There is a solution out there 👍

Thank you for watching the video and for the kind comment. Your adventures we're part of my motivation to do this build. Anyone who has spent 7 months travelling in an XJ is an expert at what works and what doesn't in my opinion. As far as the seats go, they are at the full forward position and at full forward tilt. I have heard that seats from a two door XJ tilt, which would help, but like I said, finding any XJ's in my area is near impossible. However, I think I have enough room. As for the bed, I have a thin self inflating back packers type mattress under the foam mattress and in a test they seem like a comfortable combination. An overnight is planned to test the bed and the kitchen galley system. I will be taking everything camping related I can fit in there and determine what works and what doesn't, following the experts suggestions. :)

Thank you for the comment. I like the interaction I have with other owners of the XJ. I learn a lot from you guys. I had to replace my carpet and I left those metal slats out. @@wyattoneable my rig is not a budget build, but may provide some ideas for your future projects. My 4 wheel drive Cherokee includes a full Kitchen on heavy duty slides which enables ARB Fridge & ClearView Pantry to pull completly out of the Jeep's cargo area, Roof-Top Tent (RTT), 10'pop-up screen room, and a pop-up bathroom/changing room. I can carry up to 7.8 Gallons of potable water (1 WaterPort & two 2 gallon plastic RotoPlex carriers). My Yeti Goal Zero 1250 power generator provides 3 days of electric before needing recharge. The Goal Zero power generator recharges either with AC or while the Jeep engine is running. The power generator can also be recharged with solar panels but my current energy needs don't necessitate additional alternative charging capabilities. My 15000 BTU portable stove can use either Butane or Propane for fuel. The campers' assets are totally modular which affords the flexibility to deploy optional resources as needed. If boondocking/primitive camping, I have my own water & electric power for up to 3 days. If staying in a campsite which provides water, electric, and showers/bathrooms, I can just use my RTT and kitchen. My pop-up screen room gives me a place of refuge from mosquitoes in under 2 minutes. BTW ... I always get a lot of interest and "thumbs up" comments from curious lookielou's who walk up and ask questions when the sunshade is deployed on the Jeep's rear hatch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oni6fWqGpZ6cnck&authuser=0

I would get one of those camping tables that roll up and go in a bag to take up less space. But with the table space you have and when you add the extra cover for the drawer you might not need it. Go down to one of those yellow tubs, and put your cooler on that permanent space for cooler. I to am an older woman, and not very limber, and have some weight on me, but it's nice to see someone close to my age attempting to do this. I'll be starting on my build very shortly. Working on measurements and hope I don't have to remove front passenger seat.

My table worked out great but thanks for the suggestion. Having a tub under a cooler that has a drain might be a good idea. I did a 20 night road trip and the worse part was the heat. Thats a great build wyattoneable. Well presented video and cut to the perfect length. I've always wanted to get into RVing and overlanding but for me the cost is inhibitive. Considering my age and how many times I can get out in a year, the cheaper the build the better. Keep up the good work!
@wyattoneable3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment. The build was not that expensive as I had most of the material on hand. Travelling is expensive however, especially gas. But the adventure is out there for you to explore. I hope you find way to get out there and see if the cost is worth the memories you will make.

I'm retiring soon and was thinking of getting a camper to travel with but after your seeing this video I think I'll just do this same thing with my XJ! They simply are one of the most versatile vehicles ever made and your ideas add to this 1000%.I can tell from the steering wheel that yours is also a Renix era Jeep like mine (1987-1990). haha Thanks for sharing!

I've been on the road now for a week and I can tell you it's not easy. Getting older brings along some limitations and this small space will remind you of them. However, the reason to build an XJ is for the manuberability. Getting off road to find seclusion has been pretty cool. But next time I'm buying a Class C camper and pull the XJ. 😁
@BrodieBr04 жыл бұрын
@@wyattoneable Good tips! If I can't find a good priced camper to tow my XJ behind, I can build a small 8 to 10 footer the XJ can tow. We're not getting any younger so we have to think about comfort a little more than we did 50 years ago. aha

My advice to you Wyatt is to test out your system to find it's weak points. Do it safely and in you own yard, not in the shop to test your system out, and if their is a failure point, like if its to cold, which makes you pee more so getting constantly out and back in of the jeep to go can be a pain. Or the bed is just to painful or uncomfortable, you can just walk back in to the house and rethink your design. The heating system, bed comfort, ease and access of use of items will be big issues once out on the road. May also want to invest in a nice heated blanket for those exta cold nights. I could go on but im sure you already know all of this already, so have fun with this project, I'll just be over here in the bleachers watching.

Thanks for the tips. I have a two night stay planned within walking distance of home for the reasons you have suggested. Not only to make sure the bed is comfortable but how to take care of business and shower when not in a camp site.

wyattoneable Longtrailside made some great points. Rule #1 before bed though; Always go to the bathroom right before bed. Even if you don’t have to. Learned that early on and it is the difference between getting up at 4am or 7am :)

@@simpleoverlander For sure, I do that at home now. At the risk of sharing too much information, I have a pee bottle stored for those long nights after drinking too many cocktails. :)

That's way more thought out than I'd have come up with on a first attempt. I think you have an excellent start on Options. Like with everything, a little time in there gathering experience and you'll start moving this and that around here and there adding and subtracting. It'll end up like a second home in no time. Now it makes sense why you bought an XJ!

Yes sir, the secret is out. Not only was I looking for a 4x4, it had to be cheap and a platform from which to camp. Once I recover from knee replacement surgery I will be going on a two night stay locally to test my ideas and like you say, add or subtract gear as necessary. It's been a long time since I've been rustic camping so this will be an adventure for sure.

I really enjoyed your video, I too am working with an Xj for my over landing platform. I'm mostly going to do most of my trips alone but occasionally my wife will go on the weekend outings. So I have devised a way to make us both comfortable. I use a platform that makes my whole cargo/seat area flat and use Plano boxes for basic gear I carry for my adventures, we have a bear resistant cooler and food box that we can throw all under my lifted rig while we sleep. Mine is a two door so both seats fold forward increasing the length of our sleeping area so that with me on the passenger side I can stretch completely out. My wife has the driver's side since she is 5'4" (first time we went with a group camping she went to bed early and didn't know and slept on my side), I would consider trying to locate a 2 door and score the driver's seat or better both seats. With them folded forward they act as a recliner so you can read. I'm in Colorado and got to use my set-up touring the San Juan's a couple summers ago over 4-days. That is a must! Just make sure it is the end of July-September to make it worth-while. Hope you enjoy your rig as much as I do mine! Sincerely David (semi-retired and loving it) by the way I also follow Simple Overlander. Enjoyed living vicariously through his videos.
@wyattoneable4 жыл бұрын
I enjoy hearing from fellow XJ owners so thanks for your comment. You're right, those seats would be a great option. I've watched other channels who have installed them for the reasons you have suggested. It's been a real challenge finding any XJ's around my area. Most everything is a "Grand Cherokee". You have a real challenge making the small space work for two people. Small spaces need to have multiple uses and what you've told me your system is working out for you. You're in a great area to explore. Here in Tennessee most everything is privately owned. But I will be heading West starting in May. I plan to attend the "Overland Expo" in Flagstaff which is being help on May 15-17. This is a new hobby for me so it will be good to see what manufactures have for us and to see other rigs. I'm really looking forward to that. Well, this is getting long so I better close. Thanks again for watching.
@jdgreens92684 жыл бұрын
Yeah and the other thing is you would need to score seats in the same year group the yours was ie; 91-96 or 97-2001 to make it work without a lot of mods.. I'm pretty lucky lot of CL part outs and Salvage yards. I really don't want to put those Plano boxes up on my roof while I travel nor have a heavy roof rack up there (I built one for my son that was kind of heavy) but got to thinking that I might build a flat rack as light as I can to throw those tubes up there and strap them down to maybe make it safer for animals (one box holds stuff like oil, antifreeze and other stuff that I would hate for any animal to ingest). But still throw it back in the rig to keep the weight as low as I can when exploring.

Hello Hooligan and welcome. No, not really. The trip I took to the West coast was a great experience but an experience that taught me I'm getting too old to enjoy "roughing it". I have done a couple of camping trips (one trip is another video) and I enjoyed that, but long distance driving and a long time away from home is not for me. However, with the right people, I consider another overlanding/ extended camping trip.

Wow fantastic what a job. That drop down kitchen organizer from the roof blew me away. I think you might have a couple extra inches available that you haven't used yet. Have extra cocktail before bed you'll be fine. Just get you a little funnel with a piece of Hose going outside and you won't even have to get out of bed to take a leak in the middle of the night that's important to think about. Not trying to be weird but I have done that works good.

Good job Wyatt 👍 It looks like you've put a lot of thought into the best utilization of available space 👍 Here's a tip from wood working (altho you might already know this)...to make the wood on wood slide better, take an old bar of soap and coat both surfaces to make things slide easier.....😜 I like the dropdown tray you made for the utensils and other items 👍 I've been thinking about overlanding for a few years now, but more so now that I have a truck 😉 I want to put a posi-track rear end under it tho and change the drum brakes out to disk.....😜 I'm thinking of using an enclosed trailer of around a 6k GVWR trailer to stay in line with the truck.....😜 I've got drawings started for it so I know what fits and what doesn't 👍 TFS

Since being retired I too have been getting interested in the over landing videos. I won't be prepared to be travelling over rough trails or rock crawling, but with a stock 4x4 and dry weather a guy can still get off the beaten path and take some trails for that perfect camping spot. That's the plan anyway. This Jeep is stock, no locking diffs, no lift kit and small tires so I know my limitations. But I think I can still have fun.
@SurviveN24 жыл бұрын
@@wyattoneable LOL...I hear ya Wyatt, I won't be doing any Rock Crawling either 😉 I plan on keeping mine stock for the most part too but the Limited Slip Diff is already giving me some concerns about traction....and that's just getting in and out of my driveway during the inclement weather 😲
