A series of walks for all who appreciate our village. You may have moved away or simply be unable to get out and about like you used to.
Inspired by the old photographs I have seen of Wyke and the changes I have seen in my time.
Though much of our present day village would still be recognisable to those who have lived here many years ago, hopefully the same will apply if we were to come back in a hundred years time. However, like anywhere else things change and develop and maybe the Wyke residents of the future will enjoy these glances at the village from our time.

What a flood of wonderful memories that brings back Dodger for me here in Australia. What a fine building is the former Hippodrome/Star Cinema at the top of Garden Field. So good to see it preserved. How many times have I walked or ridden my bike down Garden Field to visit my paternal grandmother who lived at 6,Fountain Terrace, where the back garden ran down to end in a hen run beside the Wyke Temperance Cricket field. Grandma Brown, Ne Schofield was the daughter of John Schofield, building contractor who lived in the east end house of Rose Cottages, situated just below the Non Political Club in Towngate.John Schofield was a big man in many ways and weighed twenty stone and reputed to be very strong. He had a reputation for having a great capacity for alcohol and my father said he won a bet to take a drink of beer at every pub from Bradford to Wyke.He was one of the first in the township to have a car,a model T Ford. It was said that he slept with a loaded revolver under his pillow.Whether he had enemies is not known but that weapon came into my fathers possession after Johns death and at times I had hold of it and used to spin the six chamber barrel. It must have cost a packet because it had a yellow ivory handle and was elaborately engraved all over.It had mysteriously disappeared by the time IO reached my teens.During the war I and afterwards watched many great films at the Hippodrme; War newsreels.Rose Marrie, staring Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald, all the old westerns and Walt Disneys Bambi. Thanks for the memories Dodger.

Wow Peter what absolutely brilliant memories. I really enjoyed hearing about your relatives, where they lived and places such as the Temperance cricket field. I have always wanted to have a peek inside the old Hippodrome. I understand it is being converted into apartments now. I've lived in Wyke since about 1987, so not that long. The non pol club was gone by the time I moved here. Shame about the revolver going missing. Sounds as if your grandad would have been right at home in one of those old westerns that you watch at the Hippodrome. May I share your memories with the Wyke Local History Group? I'm sure they would appreciate the detailed remembrances for their archives. Thanks very much for watching. Keep watching for more Wyke & Low Moor history coming up. Merry Christmas!

Another good one Ddger, going down Temperance Field. It has changed a lot, since we left for Australia over 50yrs. ago Yet much is still very familiar. I went down there hundreds of times to my grandma Brown's in Fountain Terrace just down the steps of the narrow snicket at the end ther. Grandma lived at No.6 which is just behind the yellow car to the right, where two adjacent kitchen windows face eat its center heated water in a boiler on one side and baking was done in the oven on the other side.Grandma Brown could make the most delicious pies and dinner plate size,Yorkshire puddings in it.When the terrible low Moor explosion occurred during the first world war all their windows were blown in,along with the rest of Wyke and surrounding districts,as the massive gasometer went up in a ball of flame. The end of the terrace on the right is where dads cousin Polly Brown lived. He had lots of cousins as there were lots of Browns in Wyke.Halfway down Temperance field as you came down is where some more Browns lived in particular the then famous Brown brothers who bred racing pidgeons and won many prestigous races ,flying them from the continent and many other places.Brown brothers pidgeon lofts were straigh opposite the house, where then it was all gardens and hen runs.Very few people in Wyk had a garage, let alone a car wen I was very young. Only a few had a telephone,so you went up Towngate to the public box opposite the Low Oddfellows pub.We were lucky our house and all the ones Dad built down Green Lane etc ahd a bathroom. Most of tthe old houses didn't until many years later. Fountain Terrace residents like many others places had to go to their outside toilets. On the terrace they were situated halfway along the street andun a row along a long passage that went the width of the building. During the war and a while after,I used to go thereat night with a candle or a little torch, there was no such thing as toilet rolls it was squares if the Telegraph and Argus newspaper. Monday washing days were a bi g event with clothes agitated in the big tub with a long handled 'posser' nd then put through the wooden rollers of the big cast iron framed mangle ,turning the end wheel by hand.It was impossible for a young boy to put wer clothes through while turning the wheel. They don't know they're born today with a gadget for everything. But they ahd pride then,if little else the women used to scrub the back and front stone steps and then whiten the edge with pumice.I could go on forever on how hard life was for them. There is a lot of talk about white privelege ,, but the British poor didn't have much of that in times gone by.

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed reading your remembrances Peter. As you say so much of Wyke is unchanged and familiar especially when you compare today with those old photographs of the Edwardian era. You have a great memory and its all the little details that you can recall that help make a wonderful picture of those times. A lot of it is beyond my lifetime but even so I remember my mum polishing the front step.

Hello Dodger, enjoy your walks immensely. I am able to go back to where all my early life was spent and all the history and memories are revived. I tried to send a friend request on Facebook but it didn't work. I have a fund of info about Wyke, that might help and interest you.I have been contributing stuff to the 'Wyke back in't Day' group for a long time. I just watched your winter walk in Judy Woods, it was great, So I am prompted to write further comment on that, given time, Cheers Dodger.

Hello Peter, lovely to hear from you again. Happy New Year to you and your family. Best wishes from Wyke to Australia. I do have a "Dodger's Trips" group on Facebook. Search under that I'm sure you'll find me. It would be nice to have you in our small band. Thanks for watching the Judy Woods walk. That it is probably the one that I enjoyed doing most of all. The weather certainly made the film. I would love to read another of your evocative comments if you do decide to write one on that.I have another couple of local history films coming up, hopefully in January if I can get them finished.
