I moved to The Bottom Odd in 1961 my dad was the landlord, I was nine. I met my best friend Susan Lacey in Wyke. Her parents had the newsagents. We are still friends today at the age of seventy one. I had a very happy childhood in Wyke. We used to play out all day in Judy woods. Went to Wyke Junior School and then Wyke Manor, which has been demolished now. We later moved to The Red Lion at Hell Fire Corner. Lots of happy memories watching this video. Thank you.

Thanks for the memories. I lived in Wyke 1970-76. I had a job, sweeping the arcade when Liptons was the main supermarket. The three fish shops were owned by one family (two sons David and Les and their father). My father never missed a night at the Half Way House.

It's great to hear from you and thanks for sharing your own memories. I do enjoy hearing from people who lived in the village before I moved here about 1987. I wonder had you heard that the Halfway House is due to be demolished. Sad but not used enough I suppose. Thanks for watching.

The Top Odd was called The Oddfellows just like the Bottom Odd, hence the top and bottom nicknames. My parents drank in the Bottom Odd in the 1960's.

Wok Express at the beginning used to be Herbert's a news agent come sweetshop in the 60s. Herbert the owner had awful brown stained fingers either from tobacco or an earlier case of frost bite by the look of them, He was parsimonious with the sweets always taking one back so he never ever went over the quarter.

Hello Dodger, in your walk in Towngate Wyke I found a few errors. I hope you don;t mind me pointing them out; The place you said was originally a bank ,where the police found cannabis,was actually the old Liberal Club. My uncle used to be the caretaker and in the sixties our Bradford Nomads motor cycle club, held our meetings there. The building next door which is now a hairdressers, was really the bank, next to John Moores joiners shop and chapel of rest where we held as service for my mother when I came over from Australia some years ago.In my day and long before the recreation ground and the Temperance Hall(now gone) were always said to be the top of Towngate, whereas Clare Rd. was the bottom.At the top of Clare Rd, the left hand shop was, after being built and during my childhood my teens, Willy Drakes butchers shop. The shop next door was the Yorkshire Penny Bank.my father Arthur Brown was the foreman for those buildings and the houses down Clare Rd. and up Green Lane. He worked for the contractor Arthur Hanson.My paternal great grandfather was also a well known building Wyke contractor, who lived at Rose cottages which used to be just below the Non Political Club that wass opposite the ("Low" ) Oddfellows pub.

Hi Peter. Thank you for your very interesting comments. It's always good to be educated by those who go further back in their knowledge of Wyke than myself. When I referred to the cannabis farm building that had always been the Barclays Bank since I've known Wyke in the mid 80s. Likewise the Yorkshire Chair used to be occupied by the Yorkshire Building Society until the barbers moved in (though that has since closed down the filming). I always enjoy reading about your family's connections.

Hi Lawrence thanks for taking the time to comment. Please remember me to your sister Susan. We worked together for about 3 years at Wimpy on Broadway. I seem to remember you being at Mr Minit and then Susan told me you were starting up in Wyke. Last time I saw her she was at Wyke Opticians having a break from the stresses of management.

I was always in DeeLees where the freezer and video shop had been. Whether it was for the kids spending their pocket money or me needing DIY stuff or even compost for the garden. Do you remember when they had another shop on the go at the same time for a while, on the corner of Clare Road?

Some fond memories of The Robin Hood. Drinks and sometimes Pizzas after our walks. We used to meet by the old police box and Library, but parking's no good for us there now unfortunately.
@DodgersTrips

I used to be entranced by the painting of Robin Hood. I don't know if it got damaged or they had to work on that part of the building and a new version appeared which was nowhere near as good and the charm of that picture disappeared. Is the car park next to Laverack Field any good for meeting?
@murieloflaherty9890
@murieloflaherty9890 4 ай бұрын
I'll check that out! Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a quick look on Google. Do a lot of locals park there in the evenings though? We meet 7pm so it could be a problem if they do. I had wondered about asking the bathroom place at the end of the snicket, but they might not want to set a precedent where other people just think "Oh we can park there". At present we use the roadside where Huddersfield Road branches off from Woodside Road at Low Moor and walk across to Royds Hall. Abb Scott Lane is not good at present with the pavement closed. Alternative we use is Rookes Lane Norwood Green. But good parking spots are hard to find these days for group walks. @@DodgersTrips

I would say that on an evening it will be pretty much empty. You've always got about 7 spaces near the sunbed shop and kerbside next to the paved area where the bench is as well.

Your pet shop is still remembered fondly. We'd come in after picking the kids up from school to look at the animals. Always bought crickets from your shop for my son's bearded dragon and also bought a lot of bamboo canes for the garden. You even came and potted up some hanging baskets for me when I was a novice gardener. Thanks for the reminder about your shop. Hope you enjoyed the walk.

When you live somewhere you don't think about how things have changed apart from maybe the occasional shop that changes hands. However even in a small place like Wyke so many buildings disappear and new ones go up in the course of time. Hope you enjoyed the walk and thanks for commenting.
