Maybe funniest part of Abloy is that it is one of the best locks in the world but where it's used everywhere? Well ofcourse in Finland which is one of the safest countries in the world. :D We love our Ab Lukko Oy and even our post boxes have Abloys. :D

He probably could pick it fairly easily, if he had the right tool. Same with any lock. I only know of a few people who have ever manufactured a suitable tool to do it. LPL has said he's not that great at manufacturing tools, although he has made some in the past. Soon as somebody is willing to put detailed plans online or sell the tool, I'm sure he'll do it.

No doubt the Abloy Protec2 key can be duplicated, anything can be, nothing is infallible, but what a headache in doing it. Some fine macro-engineering is called for on more than 2 axis. This is going to be a time consuming and costly exercise...and then its got to work perfectly like an original if it is out even by 0.1mm then it will fail. We are talking about real pros to do the job and to do it right. I have an Abloy Protec2 and believe me I'm not in the least concerned about exploits as they are exceedingly rare!

That ball bearing would provide absolutely no protection against key duplication - just have a hole there and manipulate the ball thing with a pick. All it does is make legitimate keys more expensive.

Key duplication has been achieved already. Actually, it is possible to modify a blank and add the ball bearing element. Even so, these are great locks and worth every dollar.

Some mobile operators (in Europe at least) love to lock their containers, equipment rooms and cabinets with Abloys. I'd tell you how many of them I had to change because they failed, but I don't have enough numbers on my keyboard. The electronic ones would sometimes fail 1 minute after installing. At that point you could have 50 different keys, wiggle them until eternity's end, reprogram into oblivion, and would end up having to drill through the MF cylinder anyway. And you better have plenty of top quality drill bits and half a day of time, because they're made out of the hardest matter known to man. So yeah, super secure. So much in fact, that it'll keep even the legimiate owner of the lock out.

For my curiosity where comes the "1.97 billion key combinations" come from? For I understand this type of key has 10 positions with 6 possible cuts. 6^10 equals 60.466.176 or 60,4 million.
@joonastalvinen
@joonastalvinen 5 жыл бұрын
Well what I found with math is that 7^11 would fit it. And with some googling I found this from one of their PDF "There are Protec systems which contain nine discs or eleven discs."
@tarehjernetarehjerne4082
@tarehjernetarehjerne4082 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can see on the key it will have a small "name" engraved on it, not the side that says pat. the most common is 7Z, which is the one picked on YT. Essentially the disc controller has a small profile on it which fits with the profile in the middle of the key. You then have 9 discs that correspond to the key with 6 positions times the amout of key profiles possible. Only abloy is allowed to make the key codes which means none will ever be the same, if they ever run out they just make a new type of key and disc controller profile, even though they will never sell enough of them to have that ever happen.

I hope you brought a bucket of drill parts, because it's going to wear out a whole lot of them against the anti-drill bits. With a portable drill, you'll just run out of batteries and it might take an hour or two to get through just the rotating plate protection. Your mind would be begging "PLEASE, just break the damn DOOR instead!!"

@@TheAzynder There's a third video out that I've seen that doesn't have the issues you're referring to. He shows the tool and technique. Very credible. I'm inclined to believe that the other two who did it are credible simply by their reputations, although it is very annoying that they would not show off their tools. Security through obscurity is pretty dumb and we should all be benefiting from the knowledge and experience the community develops as a whole, and force lockmakers to do better through embarrassment. Everyone relying on locks to keep bad guys out needs a wake-up call too; penetration testers routinely show that locks are usually not the weakest link in security, and that unearned confidence in locks is only hurting people. Computer security does not suffer from this kind of shortsightedness. Exploits are exposed and everyone is forced to do better. The incompetent companies don't stick around so long. Anyway, LPL has never been a master toolmaker. He is capable of some basic stuff, and no one should doubt his skills at using tools if he has tools, but he just doesn't have the necessary tool to pick these locks. Hopefully soon.

+TheRWS96 The forever lock is really susceptible to impressioning attacks. It's actually a pretty shoddy lock, inside a very secure housing. They could easily redesign it to have a better mechanism at the centre, but really it's also got some functionality costs to it. It's a nice toy and all, and it probably will deter most criminals.
