Also the realistic speeds show how much things have come on from the times when trains would be coming into the platform at a scale 60 mph and then they'd stop just like that.

@alanmusicman3385
@alanmusicman3385 Жыл бұрын
Combinations of things makes that possible. DCC (i.e. electronic) control of the motors in the locos, FAR better motors than we used to have and that some locos have what are called "Keep alive" modules in them, these are small packs which store a small amount of power, so that if the loco momentarily loses contact with the track (running over points or dirty sections of track) it still keeps going - especially useful when running at very slow speeds. All these things make far more realistic running possible, with very slow starts and stops. You can always tell if the old-style controls or motors are in use on a layout because the trains will do zero to 20 MPH (or vice versa) in about a tenth of a second and of course real trains can't do that!

Now this was a wonderful show, with very good videography. Good show for a number of reasons. There was a very decent spread of time periods depicted. It wasn't all pre-1970 (like far too many shows have) or all post-1970 - it was a nice balance. Some commenters have given me stick for bemoaning a predominance of 1930 to 1960 layouts at some shows - but I would merely point out that 1930-1960 is a 30 year period. 1960 to now is more than double that. Here, we saw a nice mix of time periods, mainline and branch line operations and some specialist locations too. Some truly astonishing quality models on show here as well. Special plaudits to the Kannotburn layout team - not only a great layout, but also great to see a tunnel-to-tunnel layout where the illusion is not spoiled by being able to see through the tunnel mouth into a non-scenic area - IMO the onlooker's view into a tunnel should always be into inky darkness.

Thanks for filming and posting - superb! As a point of note, I thought that the Bournemouth West layout was excellent, they got the modelling just right, same with train movements, and two elements that don't normally scale - smoke and sound - they went to great efforts to make them to scale too. Surely the whole of Bournemouth West has to be a benchmark for modelling, in particular, modelling smoke and sound now?

Excellent layout and very realistic. One thing that lets the realism down is that the tenders of the steam locos are coupled with a larger than life gap up to the engine. I guess that is to allow tighter than normal curves in the track.
@SDJR7F88
@SDJR7F88 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Some of the layouts have to have tighter curves to get into the fiddle yards around the back, allowing for space for storing trains off scene.

To go to such lengths for realism but to fail in such areas that the little things that let it down stand out so much. I cannot fault the effort but a few basics would enhance and immerse the watcher in more realism. The track laying, there are areas where the vehicles wobble or drop. The balast is uniform in colour and there is no grime, even in the stations. The rolling stock is all pristine and has a plastic shine. (understandable) I'm never a fan of static items which should be moving, where you can get away with a person sitting reading a newspaper seeing someone permanently standing is a reality break. Perhaps people think these points unfair but if you go to the lengths that these people obviously have then why wouldn't you take constructive criticism? (definitely not trolling). I respect the hard work and effort and the amount of time and dedication that it obviously took to achieve this. I just think some track relaying and ground weathering will enhance the experience.

Nearly very good, but alas still some trains running around with neither passengers or train crews evident. Always spoiling the ship for a ha'perth of tar. Why cut the cheapest of corners and spoil the whole effect. My old boss said we could run a perfect service if it wasn't for all the passengers cluttering up the place. Well some put them on platforms, but a lot didn't put any in trains or the crews to work them. The first lot was great, but the rest just couldn't be bothered, WHY? (disgruntled retired train driver ).

Maybe the "rail industry" should talk to the "automotive industry", as they seem to have perfected the "driverless" problems. So many ghost trains with no train crews, mind you a lot of empty passenger trains as well. Plus there should be red tail lights and white headlights.

Nice layouts, but the Freight trains ! Freight trains in the BR steam era, had a thousand rules covering the position in a freight train of EVERY wagon ! Something that quiet obviously is totally unknown to these layout owners/operators. They don't even seem to know that "unfitted" (No brakes) wagons HAD to go behind any "Fitted" (Vacuum braked) wagons, for obvious reasons !!!
