Gday Ade, your giving me more ideas again mate, I’ve got a mill drill and no power feed on the x axis is a real pain, I’m looking forward to seeing how yours works, that’s mate, always enjoy your videos, thanks. Takes care. Matty

I almost have the same model of mill - I recently got mine from Mainland China, but in far worse condition as yours - grinding dust everywhere, welded screws/washers for the bed adjustments .. so it took a while to have an operational mill .. Now making the X power drive - similar idea to yours

Entertaining and informative as ever,. Interesting viewing Ade! I'm almost ready to make chips with my Warco WM18 diy cnc. Chip tray being painted now.

I have just done a direct drive at the left side of x axis on an Emco FB2...best thing I ever did and like you I am now thinking Z axis and Quill. I was not sure if direct drive would have enough torque, but so far it has not been a problem with an 8 wire 3Nm Nema 23 motor. I'm not going to do CNC because of the round column, but power feed is such an improvement.

Good Morning, I have done a conversion not unlike yours, it is only a mini mill and as yet it is not finished as I will clean it up when I am happy how it works, so far I can see no fault in it, I only used an off the shelf motor and gear box and it seem to work fine. David Johnson

Morning Ade another good project I think from what your saying I may steal this to motorise my lathe leads crew

Great project Ade, I may convert mine to a chain or belt drive, present set up is an engagable clutch, but it nullifies use of the second hand wheel, which can be a pain at times. Enjoyed, cheers mate!

Hi Ade... Always nice to see you again.... great vid, as always... I'm having probs with the finish I'm getting on my lathe... Really frustrating, but being a novice, I guess I'm expecting to much too soon... lol Frank...

Another great project Ade, looking forward to the next episode. I've decided to go for a WM16 belt drive but due to the current situation Warco seems to have sold out of everything apart from the big stuff. Thanks and best wishes.

Spooky! I ended up doing exactly the same thing with my Amadeal 25, Ade, which I think is pretty much the same as your WM16B. I slotted the pulleys in some 60mm x 20mm ally channel, but used a narrower belt than yours. Look forward to seeing if your solution works at the table extremes: mine struggles, 'cos of the extra forbid needed to overcome the table imbalance. Motor's fine - belt slips :-( Works well, mainly just to jog L and R with Universal G-Code Sender (Platform edition). Like you, I may be working up to sort-of CNC, although, I think I'll need to explore Mach 3. Just fitting a pair of 200N struts to the head before motorising the Z-Axis, next :-)

Great video and nice work as always. Just a thought, why not put the motor and pulley drive at the opposite end of the x axis in place of the handwheel there? Then your other handwheel has unbridled access and your power feed is out of the way.

Interesting as ever Ade. Have you considered adding an adjustable idler pulley to get the belt tension just right? (Also give some flexibility on belt length.) You could use one of the spare pulleys you have.
@Stefan_Boerjesson4 жыл бұрын
Briiliant work, especially the way to measure the needed length of the belt. It could be done once the wheels are in thier places, but.... Good idea! Why didn't You put the tooth wheel in the lathe to bore the center hole out?

It’s always enjoyable watching you upgrade your machines. What will you do once there are no more upgrades? Or should I be asking where you will put the next machine in need of improvement... *cough*surface grinder*cough* 🤣 -Joe

If you used a through shaft motor you could mount it direct on the leadscrew and still keep your handle

when i did mine i bolted it strait to the x axis screw leaving the other hand wheel on the other side there is no resistance when turning it i was going to try the belt way but when i started playing about with the stepper motor an driver i realised that it would not needed

Just made a very similar power feed for my warco 18 mill. Should be putting the electrics in over the weekend. I used that common chinese speed and direction controller, and took the two switches and the pot off the board and use different ones to fit into the new build. What electrics have you decided to use?
@ade63dug4 жыл бұрын
same controller same Idea remote pot and switches. email me pictures. email on start of all my videos. I am no electronics expert . electrics yes electronics , bad. Cheers Ade.

Hi ade what size motor and pulley are you using where can l get them from please.

Hi Ade Hi Ade Velly interesting. Like your boring head. Going to order one, looks to make boring holes much easier than using a 4 jaw chuck and a boring tool in the tail stock. I mounted my stepper pointing in, which made it impossible to mount the DRO slide, so I put that on the front, which means I only have one lock. Just had a look, on my WM 14 the rotary scale is 12mm wide. Can you tell me if they are the same on your mill, I suspect they must be. Thanks for all you do, I look forward to each video. Cheers Noel

I am about to add a motor driven Z axies to my mill. It's so annoying moving it always up and down with this handwheel. After this I will add the X axies power feed, but in an differend way ;)
@incubatork4 жыл бұрын
If you intend to add motors on Z as well your just as well doing a full cnc, not much more cost, I put a small geared motor on X to help make plates for full conversion to cnc.
@matthiash.46704 жыл бұрын
@@incubatork I don't add a stepper motor, just a worm gear motor. So converting to full CNC is way more work. Especially I want to keep the manual mode.
@incubatork4 жыл бұрын
@@matthiash.4670 Thats how I had mine but The gearing was too high and had to fit a clutch or I could not turn the other handle, you could do the same as Ade but using the wormdrive motor as long as you can turn the motor by hand it should work with the handle. I have seen a wiper motor used to raise Z on someones youtube channel but cannot remember who, Check out Pragmatic Lee's channel for the x axis motor mod, there are many more including an electric drill with a T piece in the chuck. Good luck

Hi Ade, look like your setup is going to be similar to the one by myfordboy. I based mine on his but rather than going with pulleys I went with a direct drive and a friction clutch. Look here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ7Kl4mPl8qZpMk I prefered this route as I wanted a means to decouple the drive from the table if I wanted to turn the handwheel. With the powerfeed circuit on, the handwheel will be stiff to turn as the stepper motor will be exerting it's holding torque. With the circuit off, the handwheel will be free to turn, but you will be back feeding voltage into the circuit through the motor - the electronics might not be so happy! So my way round it was to install a friction clutch, which will also serve as a safety and slip in case of an overload etc. The PWM generator in my circuit also allows for rapid table movement and jog modes.

Nice job Ade, looking forward to watching this upgrade, another one for the future ideas bucket on my Cormak. Carl raises a good idea, see if the motor will fit the other end, then two benefits, its out the way of the main handle and also, if your DRO ever breaks, you will still have the manual graduations on the right hand end ready to use. Either way it will be a great upgrade. Cheers, Jon

Hi Ade can the motor go underneath the handle out of the way

It could but would limit your travel as it would catch on the base and table lock befor getting to full travel, I have a similar mill but blue, HBM
