I don't understand why the female bands of the 90s were dismissive of Exene because she played with men. This era of punk was extremely violent and she never was intimidated at all the shows I saw. Her writing was extremely feminist and challenged the status quo of the times long before any of them. Yeah the Runaways were all women, but they presented themselves as provocatively in a bad girl way to get guys interested in their work. You can argue about that one but, Exene didn't wear revealing anything to pander to anyone singing about getting wasted and the hopeless struggle against her parents. She is a complete original and you can't even figure out what her points of reference are in her work unless it's explicitly stated. I'm not knocking the runways. Joan Jett is the woman so many young women were influenced by and unfortunately because of the times she was in the closet and performing songs using the template of Male performers that were in the boys club. Exene was authentic and writing with no reference to what was. The band you could hear the references but not her lyrics. She has been criticized for her singing voice because it's not how a woman is supposed to sound but you can pick it out of a lineup and her harmonies are where you hear the magic. Bob Dylan wasn't criticized for not having a strong vocal ability in a conventional sense, but you could hear the what only he could sing because nobody can touch him. It's a shame how dismissive people are about something so incredibly unique and important until they're told just how much so something is and I guess that is what I find odd. God bless her because she hasn't been by but a few.

I'll go somewhere else I'll move to the couch It's darker in the dark It's darker in the day I forgot you were a liar Now it's five to twelve Shut up and smoke And I'll go somewhere else No more orange nightgowns One o'clock and then it ends One o'clock and then it ends One o'clock and then it ends This is no place This is no place To be addicted to another place Never get to go Don't you want me to make it I took as long as you took You take a lot from me I forgot you were a thief I want to be like her Instead I stay nowhere Marked down in the basement Lousy at the bottom A life of intermission A life of intermission A life of intermission This is no place This is no place To be addicted to another place I'll go somewhere else I'll move to the couch It's darker in the dark It's darker in the day I forgot you were a liar Now it's five to twelve Shut up and smoke And I'll go somewhere else No more orange nightgowns One o'clock and then it ends One o'clock and then it ends One o'clock and then it ends

Very favorite X song and the performance takes me back deep to that wild, we-say-NO time of punk. Tears down my face, thank you.

Called an "L.A." Punk band, but Exene is from the Midwest -- Nebraska or Iowa), and John is from Baltimore, originally

The only that would have made this song better was a rockabilly Billy Zoom solo. Nevertheless it still is one of my favorite X songs.

It's exactly the right place for him. Punk shows were the place for outcasts. And he looks like he's havin a rockin time.
