It's been 20 years and I still love this music. I was just a kid when I first played X-Com and it's still one of my all-time favorite games. The remake was pretty freaking good too.

I wonder what's down in the comments... Oh, right. "Old games were much better, what happened to games, blah blah". Getting real tired of seeing this type of comment. I love my old games and my new games. The new X-Com was praised even by the original's creator, Jullian Gollop. I just finished X-Com Ufo defense, and am going to play though XCOM Enemy Uknown. Why? Because they're BOTH great games.

I'm playing the game through the Open XCOM mod/port on Windows 10, with the base game taken from the Steam release. It sounds a bit different, but I love it anyways. Love this theme, they did great work. Edit: That would be because of the audio format the game is using, Adlib.

If you are willing to go down a small rabbit hole, you can download a program called "VirtualMidiSynth" which will allow you to load a custom soundfont, then you can change the music sounds to whatever tickles your fancy. I recorded this in DOS using an old XP laptop to capture the sound, but if you like the way this plays, you can find a soundfont called "AweROMGM.sf2" that will get you, like, 99% of the way there. But there are awesome options to choose from, and a lot of work went into making some amazing soundfonts.

@adamowsky81 It's funny, when you think about it. Way back in the days of DOS, it was all about the sound card. SB16 was popular but then SB AWE32 hit the market and offered additional RAM for the sound card to use. A sound card that takes RAM? And additional hardware to make it better. (WaveTable attachment) Then we pushed into Windows, dropped MIDI, and pushed better video. And now its "Who got the shiniest graphics" with a video card stronger than my second computer.

@Lobot0r I don't know if the card I have is going to do a good job of recording SB16 stuff. I imagine that since it is newer and compatible then it should sound the same. If I can get some free time, I will record it and upload it for you.

I have! I've been keeping an eye on it for several years planning to pick it up on a sale sometime. I haven't gotten it yet because, though it may be very faithful to XCOM mechanics, it's on faithful to the XCOM aesthetics. I really enjoy every little detail about XCOM, and playing the same game but without sectopods, laser rifles, and Skyrangers just wouldn't do it for me. Actually, as I'm writing this I checked and it's on sale for 75% off, so I'm picking it up. Thanks!

Hey, have you ever seen the alpha/beta gameplay of the remake? It had Action Point based movement and firing, and a lot of stuff from the original. It seems like they wanted it to be more like the original at first.

Never played this one. TFTD was my first and only X-COM to date but the entire series is my favorite game series of all time. Looking forward to October when EU comes out so that I can get kicking some Ethereal rear end!... If they have them that is...
