It is definitely a part of the trilogy but more so Falls in line with the X-Force titles and taking place in between the not forgotten arc before Necrosha which leads into Second Coming so technically they all tie in together and is a must for any fan of Wolverine's Black Ops X-Force team or just X-Force in general

definately a part of the trilogy in my mind. the 1st and 3rd acts were big and splashy - so it's nice to keep in toe with a core group by comparison. it's the first hope learns of her own role in the story, which begins to steers the narrative back towards the (eventual) present/homecoming.

I wanted to add that physical copies have some extensive back matter - including some issues featuring Bishops origins. fun Larry Stroman art. and ..I did skip this 'middle of the arc' x-over at the time of print. it's servicable and set in such a nearly non-canon local - that you kinda/hafta side with all the wtf moments. you can digest the story elements as you please, or simply note the moving parts come together towards a finally. best part of the story has to be that no one's happy to see each other. except when Hope ..i guess ya covered it. gotta giggle at Cable not appreciating company even after (millennia?) on the run.

Good to know about the physical edition! I found two digital editions but neither had many bonuses, really. I guess I did under value how the ways this series differs from parts 1 and 3 also work to its advantage, at least in helping it stand out. I probably was a bit unfair to this comic overall. I think since I read it last, I was a little disappointed that it didn't clarify more of the then current status of the x-men universe for me, which thinking about it now is pretty unfair to hold against this story.

I feel like I've already been through this with Vandal Savage and Clark Kent. And who is the super genius who came up with the cockroach mutant idea? At no point was anyone like, "hey, maybe we shouldn't do this. It sounds like an Outer Limits episode."?!? THEN who was the OTHER genius who created the super negasonic insect warhead? Sheesh. Kubricky. That art, though...🎨

I think as a light read, it was fine. I think that's what Kyle and Yost excel at. But I totally agreed with your opinion on how they depicted Bishop. It wasn't a good look, so I was a bit disappointed.

So in what order should you read these? I’ve just finished Cable The last hope vol 1. I’d assume after you’d read the last hope vol 2? (To put it simply where does Cable last hope volume 1 & 2 fit in with the messiah trilogy?

Actually the Last Hope collections are bigger collections that cover more material than I had. This collection contains material collected in both Last Hope volumes, so if you have those your probably better off just reading them. You'll basically get this full story plus more of the build-up to Second Coming from Cable's side. I'd also recommend reading the X-Force series from the time and X-Men: Manifest Destiny if you want to read Second Coming. So to clarify, the Last Hope collections run from the ending of Messiah Complex, through Messiah War, and up to the beginning of Second Coming.

I just read 'x-force messiah war' and my jaw drop how bad writing it is : Archangel doesn't kill Apocalypse bcoz of some mercy issues lol.. while he had no problem killing dozens of purifier soldiers ...it's like a soldier in ww2 kills many enemy soldiers and then finds Hitler and decides he wont kill him bcoz he want to be merciful now , then Apocalypse is somehow changed by Archangel mercy , it's like he got overpowered by his own creation in a way of thinking , a mutant more powerful and dangerous than Strife who been through centuries of hard shaping himself for domination! gets 'change of heart' lol , another example when Bishop keeps coming to kill Hope ..Wolverine jumps on him from behind and could kill him ,instead he just scratches his head ? the guy is determined to kill Hope and he (Wolvie) just gave psycho Bishop ANOTHER chance to kill Hope ..wow ..seriously..
