I'm from brazil and I watch global politics and had the opportunity to see this happening here. One point that is good to have in mind in this situation is that here was really commom for social média eventually be sutdown for legal reasons. It was not the first time that it happens and this just get that proportio because Elon Musk wants to make drama from it. Everytime a company that owns social media tries to ignore our government they are sutdown just like this, it already happens with whatsapp, telegram and now Twitter. In all the situations the company tries to not be responsable for moderation of crimes that happens in the plataform, most because of the brazilian insurrection in 8th january when the bolsonaristas copying the us hogs, tried to make a coup and install a military dictatorship here own by the bolsonaristas. Before Elon buy the Twitter we had a audience with our minister of defense and the Twitter spoke person, and Twitter people tried to imply that their "terms of service is more important than brazilian law" and they got shoved by our minister and comply, banning far right Twitter accounts that was involved in the attemped coup. When Elon buys Twitter he brought that acc back to the plataform and started confronting our government. This happens at the same time that he start to get interest in the lítio farms in the Amazon forest. Altrought he is giving Internet to indigenous population in the forest via starlink, a really big part of the users is the mining people that Elon is trying to lobby into power so he can use the mines in the future. When the same happened with other companies they tought we wasnt being serious about the ban and after 24hr they accepted our conditions, but in Elons case he is doing all he can to make things worst and he is using the same narrative that the bolsonaristas uses that "we are living in a dictatorship run by moraes", because he is the ONLY thing that stopped the coup in the last election, and is the wall that is protecting our democracy from the far right bolsonaristas. Elon is just supporting the discourse that led to the coup as the far right he is, he wants our democracy to fall so he can compete with BYD.

Just a heads up: You guys mentioned Australia doesn't need a foreign company to have a legal representative to operate on the country. Brazil ALSO doesn't need one EXCEPT if the company has legal issues piling up. As long as the company is complying to the law, it's allowed to operate just fine without a legal representative. That is the main issue at hand. Unresponded legal trouble started to mount over a few years, and Elon's move was to dismantle his offices and withdraw all representation so he didn't have to deal with any of it.

It was completely done by the book. When there are legal issues piling up, Brazilian law demands a legal representative from the company. That's what was going on before Musk, but after he bought it, instead of dealing with all of it he just shoved his head in the sand and pulled out all representatives. The courts demanded _for a long time_ that the company appoint one so that they can get on with the whole thing, and finally X got banned. Because it failed to comply.

Well, that is a tricky subject. Yeah, one could argue that was Moraes is doing is actually censorship, but opinions differ a lot on that (with both sides citing different articles on our constitution that both support and condemn what he's doing) With all that said, yeah Brazil does not have laws that demand an internet company (or any foreign company, for that matter) to have a legal representation - that is true - but it IS required for such a company to send a legal, proper representative when any sort of legal matters are required. Yeah, Bluesky has no representation here, but if any legal action was to be taken on it, it would require someone to represent it, and the same thing that happened with X/Twitter would also happen with Bluesky. All of this is stated by Marco Civil da Internet, 12th article.

De moraes then try to arrest the workers of twitter in brazil for twitter not complying with his orders,so musk fired all of them to save them from jail (BTW this would be like arresting a waiter for the crimes of a restaurant,with of course has no legal bases)

fora que tem muita gente espalhando que o twitter foi banido pq eles tavam se recusando a banir perifs que difundiam nazismo/racismo/discurso de odio, sendo que dos perfis que eles se recusaram a banir nenhum tava postando essas coisas, era só oposição politica, inclusive 2 desses perfis eram da esposa e filha de um opositor com a desculpa de que a pessoa poderia postar pelos perfis delas, se isso não é censura na cara dura eu n sei oq é
