*X-Men Bigger Than The Avengers?* Before the MCU kicked off with Iron Man (2008), the X-Men were the face of Marvel, right alongside Spider-Man. Even today, the X-Men hold the record for the highest-selling comic book issue ever: X-Men #1 (1991). They often took center stage over the Avengers, even in big crossover events. Just take a look at the cover of Infinity War (1992), and you'll see a bunch of X-Men characters front and center. Then there’s X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997), which introduced a whole generation of kids and teens to the team, becoming many people's first experience with the X-Men. Back then, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man were easily Marvel's biggest franchises. Meanwhile, the Avengers, featuring characters like Iron Man, Hawkeye, Antman, Wasp, Doctor Strange, and Captain America to name a few were more like B- or C-listers. Thor and Hulk were a bit more well-known to mainstream audiences, but if you mentioned Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, or Hawkeye, most people wouldn’t have had a clue who they were. Ask someone back then, "Who’s Iron Man?" and they’d probably draw a blank. But ask them about Wolverine, Storm, Beast, or Cyclops, and you’d probably hear, “Oh, they’re from the X-Men!” *The Avengers Become Mainstream* This all changed when Marvel shifted focus to the characters they still owned. With their biggest IPs like X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man tied up with Fox and Sony, Marvel began building their own interconnected universe around the Avengers. The MCU was of course born with Iron Man (2008), which turned the once lesser-known character into a household name overnight. Over the next few years, characters like Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Captain America gained widespread recognition through their solo films. But it was in 2012, with the release of The Avengers, that these heroes truly became global icons along with The Avengers team itself. So many people were introduced to Marvel through the MCU, which created this odd effect where, for some, anything outside the MCU wasn't "Marvel." They saw movies like X-Men and Fantastic Four years prior but didn’t connect the dots that these were actually Marvel properties. Since those films were made by different studios and had no connection to the MCU, many people just assumed they had no ties to Marvel at all. Maybe they heard about the X-Men and Fantastic Four but just didn't know they were Marvel. *X-Men Connections To The Greater Marvel Universe* The X-Men have deep ties to the greater Marvel Universe, with key characters like Rogue, who started as a villain in Avengers Annual #10 (1981) and later became an X-Man, having a complicated history with Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel). Wolverine shares a long history with Captain America, while Magneto is the father of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. The X-Men have also been crucial in major crossovers like Infinity War, Civil War, and Secret Invasion, often involved in mutant rights, cosmic stories, and events that shape the larger Marvel narrative. It's such a shame that Fox never allowed Marvel to connect the X-Men universe with the MCU. During Phase 1 of the MCU, there were many planned crossovers, such as a deleted scene in Iron Man (2008) where Nick Fury mentions mutants during his post credit scene, and early ideas for Wolverine and a young Magneto to appear in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). However, the X-Men films continued to release alongside the MCU, remaining entirely disconnected from eachother, right up until 2019 with the final Fox-produced X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix. *The Future Of X-Men* Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the same year Avengers: Endgame concluded the Infinity Saga, bringing the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four back to Marvel. This gave Marvel the freedom to create their own X-Men and Fantastic Four movies and shows, but the challenge now is how to introduce these iconic teams into a universe that’s existed without them since the beginning. As of 2024, Marvel has released X-Men '97, set outside the MCU as part of the '90s Animated Universe, and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which serves as both a love letter and a farewell to the Fox era of Marvel films. Next year, we’re getting Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), which will officially bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU. Following this, it’s likely we’ll finally see the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I think Blade and X-Men were the 2 movies that reinvigorated Marvel comics and the idea that comic book movies can be successful. It helped to get great actors for the roles. Patrick Stewart (as Prof. X) is perfect in everything. I don't know if you already have your holiday movies picked out, but he played Ebenezer Scrooge in a version of A Christmas Carol. It came out the year before X-Men, so it was done around the same time.

I'd been reading the X-Men comics for nearly 20 years when this came out. Cannot tell you what a thrill it was to see these characters I'd come to love on the silver screen, in a movie that was pretty damn good. The scene near the end, where a badly wounded Wolverine deliberately risks his life and lets a dying Rogue take his healing factor, was taken pretty directly from one of my favorite moments in the comics. That really hit in the feels. Going forward, some of the X-Movies are awesome, some are some are satisfactory, and a couple are disappointing, but it's definitely worth the journey. Hope y'all enjoy it as much as I did.

@@tktopmoviesthe answer to your question is spoiler territory Real world backstory, though… When Marvel sold off movie rights, they did it with bundles of characters: Spider-Man (Sony), X-Men (Fox), Fantastic Four (Fox), and Avengers/Captain America (unimportant because the rights reverted back before anything significant was produced) . Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were in the Avengers bundle, but Quicksilver (being a secondary character) was also in X-Men. So when the MCU used Scarlet Witch and QuickSilver, Fox still owned X-Men movie rights, including Magneto - so they couldn’t use him as their father. Avengers/Cap reverted back so Marvel created the MCU. Disney then bought Marvel. Sony made a deal that allowed the MCU to use Spider-Man but not his villains. Fox has now been purchased by Disney so the X-Men and Deadpool are back with the MCU multiverse. (So is the Fantastic Four.) Other, less valuable properties were also sold off but have since reverted back to Marvel such as Daredevil. The outliers here are Blade - which went to New Line but has since reverted back to Marvel - and The Hulk which Universal still has the rights to produce solo movies with the Hulk, but Marvel can include the character in other movies.

Wonderful reaction guys! I grew up in the 80's and read the X-Men comic books. And this movie honored us with alot of things from the comic book as we already recognized most of the characters, even the secondary and background characters. AND their own stories. There was already decades of lore when the movie came out and they try to cram in alot. We home you continue to watch the subsequent ones, although they weren't as good as this first one as it seemed the studio took over on how the story should be told and what elements to use from the lore. But it's still fun and entertaining to watch. On to the next, and we can't wait!

YEAH finally X-Men !!! They were first introduced in the comics back in 1963 created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and they're the one of the big trio of Marvel, alongside The Avengers and Fantastic Four. Obviously this movie is one of the original Marvel movies way before the MCU existed, and you gotta give credit to the X-Men franchise because the MCU wouldn't exist without em. The franchise was made by 20th Century Fox, but in March 2019 Disney purchased Fox and now the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four are officially back at Marvel, where they belong. But because they were made back in the 2000s (the original trilogy), they didn't use their comic book accurate costumes because at the time studios thought they looked stupid with em which is not true, so they made these black leathers cause The Matrix was big at that time. All that rambling aside, I'm glad y'all started watching the pre-MCU Marvel movies because since we're in the Multiverse Saga, these movies are gonna come into play especially after that Loki season 1 finale. There's also the older Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield y'all need to watch (unless you've already seen em), then you have the Blade trilogy, Daredevil from 2003, Elektra, the 2000s Fantastic Four movies etc. Y'all guys are the best and I can't emphasis it enough how awesome you both are... :D

The xmen series is one of my all time favourites. I'm happy to see somebod(ies) with a bit of perception to be beginning it. Now WARNING the xmen films don't always follow the history in the comics and don't even have continuity amongst themselves SO.... you are going to have to be a bit forgiving when you 'come across' such 'flaws'. Please don't let them spoil what is otherwise a great series. In particular you're going to have to Watch XMEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE with such flexibility in mind. The world in general hates this movie because of such liberties while I consider it one of the best in the series - I'm anxious to know what a couple of "extra perceptive" reviewers might think of it. Last thing: have you noted any similiarities betwenn Professor X and Martin Luthur King jr.; Magneto and Malcolm X? Do you think a young Stan Lee in the 60's was using his employment in the comic book industry to be (just a little) didactic?????

@@tktopmovies Ah that's right, you did mention early on in your MCU reactions that you've seen Spider-Man already. And yeah Sony has their own "Villain-verse" of movies that they make just so that the Spider-Man IP doesn't revert back to Marvel. They contain: Venom Venom: Let There Be Carnage Morbius Madame Web Venom: The Last Dance Kraven the Hunter (Coming out December 13th). I also forgot to mention, there's the Marvel Netflix shows. They had a minor connection to the MCU when they came out (they name drop some characters and mention the attack on New York from the first Avengers as "The Incident"), I would suggest AT LEAST watching the first season of Daredevil before No Way Home. There's a new MCU show coming in March called "Daredevil: Born Again" and it'll serve as Season 4 of that Netflix show (but now have a deeper connection to the MCU). The confusing part here though is you might want to get caught up on ALL of the Marvel Netflix before Born Again as there's been mention of the other characters showing up now too. But I will warn you, it's a bit of an undertaking. But if you guys decide to do so, the watch order is as follows: Daredevil Season 1 Jessica Jones S1 Daredevil S2 Luke Cage S1 Iron Fist S1 The Defenders The Punisher S1 Jessica Jones S2 Luke Cage S2 Iron Fist S2 Daredevil S3 The Punisher S2 Jessica Jones S3 It's a lot, especially when the X-Men movies are on your plate right now too.
