First! I loved this story. It showed us Wolverine's claws were actually part of his mutant genes instead of given to him by Weapon X. And Magneto's defeat in this storyline led to Onslaught. Also the arcade fighting game X-Men: Children of the Atom was based on this storyline

I almost mentioned that learning about Wolverine's claws being bone was the first indication in the comics that they were part of his mutation, but I left that out at the last minute. Not really sure why. And I loved the children of the atom game when I was a kid. That and the 90s cartoon are a big part of why I became an X-men fan!

That issue with Illianna wrecked me. I'd just lost my sister to AIDS after caring for her for 6 years. She was awesome. Want to see a true hero? Watch someone use the time they have left trying to prevent others from getting the disease that is going to kill you while people baselessly call you a whore, a pervert and an addict for talking about safe sex. She did more than that though. She put together a program to pair prepared PWA speakers with gigs reaching thousands. Pedro zamora was one of her peeps. Anyway, wrecked me. Strong writing.

I feel like I must have been harsher in my review than I remember being, based on how everyone seems to think I dislike this story. I actually like it a lot. I always challenge myself to be critical of even stories I like, so I guess I just focused on the criticism too much in the review.

8:14 That because they heavily implied that Cable would turn into Stryfe in another timeline, and turned into Ahab in Rachel Summer's timeline the last he was seen. Good thing they decided to go the Nathan Summers way with Rory as Ahab.

Okay, fair, seeing as I just said Magneto ripped out his adamantium skeleton, that does seem like a dumb thing to say. But in the art it was just presented as his metal bones being all bent until they ripped through the flesh. The comic didn't specify that the adamantium was actually separated from his bones, and even the characters in the issue were surprised when his claws popped out and weren't metal (I think if you pause the video on the panel showing the bone claws you can see someone shouting about it). So that's why I said that line.

I actually didn't know about zero tolerance. It's from the years between onslaught and the start of the ultimate comics where I wasn't reading comics and I've got a big blind spot there. I'll definitely look into that one. The others I already very much want to cover!

I reread this series this past week and drew many of the same conclusions you did. ("it from it"? what editor didn't send that back for clearer language?) It had moments but those were just punctuations between massive turgid speeches. I thought the design on the acolytes made them ununique. Even the more monstrous looking acolytes blended together. The stuff in uncanny 303 was rock solid. The parts with Kitty Pryde and Colossus were strong, but I might be only thinking that because I like Kitty Pryde so much. I read the book on a kindle. The version I have is wonky and has a few pages out of order, making the clutch moment when Colossus clobbers Bishop deflate quite a lot. It's been years since I read this story. It might have been me reading it as a kid and looking at pictures, but I don't recall it being so dang wordy. It needed to breathe. Quiet moments, like when Colossus was destroying his paintings, were the most significant. Good video.

Thanks! Glad you liked it! I do love 90s comics, and I do love this comic (despite what most people commenting seem to think), but definitely comics from the time had a real problem with letting events breathe. There was so much need to cram each page full with dialogue and it hurt some really good moments. I agree that the bit of Colossus destroying his paintings was pretty powerful.
