OMG YES!!!~ I know a lot of people didn't love EO:U's story mode (I agree, it had its problems), but I really enjoyed the characters and their interactions as a team, and EO:U has been the only EO I've felt a real need to beat X3 I connected to the preset characters and needed to see them through their journey ^_^ I'm super excited to see that it looks like EO2 is getting a remake with a story mode (and I'm positive it'll have a classic mode, for those of you that would rather play that way).

i love both the original and the untold series of etrian odyssey, played all the games and beat all of them, im practically addicted to them, but whenever i create a party, my male characters has to look youthful or somewhat young since all the females are too. this fufilled my needs for the highland portrait in EOU, but the characters for EOU 2 are basically a bunch of grown lolicons (except for the archer, which for some reason reminds me of levi in SNK) who are hanging around with little girls that can kill stuff. If only they made them as young as the highlander and Arthur, which were both perfect for me.

Yeah but every modern jrpg actually has a good story. Isn't that all that really matters? Also most U.S.A. games always reuses the same story but changes the gameplay. That's why i always rely on the Japanese people to make good games.

I got the original EO2 back when it came out and, embarrassingly, I'm still way in the early stages (and in EO1 I'm just in the second Stratum). I have no idea how you guys beat these games, it's dang hard (I'm not hating though, I adore the art).

Its not impossible though the start of the games are kinda tough but as long as you know what ur doing and have a good idea on how to make out ur party, its really not too bad and gets easier (in a sense).

***** I agree that the start of EO games is the most difficult part, relatively speaking. There's hardly any build done in interesting skills at the very beginning and you are still deciding how you want to shape your characters. And while you get the levels for doing so, they beat you hard.

LinkSword I always said the very beginning of EO2 was maybe a bit too hard. I mean how they just throw you into the middle of the first floor, and you have to find your way back the the entrance. From what I remember the Crawlers can 1 hit anybody, including protectors (I dunno if they will be 1 hit while defending) And for some more salt in the wound, you cannot go back to town to heal up/revive until you finish drawing the amount of map they want you to draw. I have never seen someone who was new to EO be able to get back to town from that initial 'test' on their first try.

Yeah, the soldier at the beginning of EO2 was really douchy - it's the only EO game where they won't let you just go to town, rest and then keep exploring the first floor. I did die once, myself - it didn't help that by transferring the data from EO1 the soldier doesn't even give you Medica. Fortunately, the map saving feature is there when you die, so with that I filled in the floor before dying twice. Other than that, the beginning of EO2 is very punishing. The FOEs are strong as hell and won't even give you experience, getting money proves difficult since each gathering node skill point only gives you 1 try (instead of 2 as in the first game). Normal enemies are strong in general. Also, squirrels.

Do note what you are getting in to. Thus far, this and the previous remake (Etrian Odyssey Untold, based on the original game of the series) are the only ones with a default character party and a plot that involves them personally. All of the previous games involve you creating a guild of silent characters from thin air that might as well be random scrubs recruited off the streets in need of work. Which is actually supposed to be the point of it all.

Tea Yeah, there's a plot. You should be fine. Though at first it generally doesn't ever seem like there is. I began with Untold and IV, but people always tell me the biggest plot twist of EO1 was that there was actually a plot. The second would be where this whole fiasco was taking place, but that's too big of a spoiler. Otherwise you're just a newbie adventuring guild trying to make some money exploring the labyrinth, and you spend some time being just that, if above average in skill . . . of course this is an RPG, so you eventually have OP stats, but that's to be expected. Every hero was a newb once.

I've been waiting for Persona Q to come out so that I could get a first glimpse at the EO type gameplay but that might not be the case anymore haha Also, nice Archer icon!

Tea EO1-3 were DS games, I believe, while the 3DS gen began at 4. But why would you buy 1, there's Untold for 3DS :3 Untold and 4 have 3DS demos up, might as well test it out a bit. Untold demo is story mode only though.

It looks like they are, although I don't see alot of people considering PersonaQ a fresh new EO game. I do myself, at least. My question is what they'll do after EO3. EO4 does not need an update at all. If I were to guess, I'd say they'd make a whole new storyline regarding the 7 Yggdrasils as a whole, instead of EO's traditional "Big tree goes corrupt, turns out to be ultimate boss."

The world outside Yggdrasil looked pretty detailed in the trailer. Hopefully, they build on the world map. I loved EO4 for it's multilayered world map. I'd like more than 4 sectors, though.

Ugh, this is (part of) why I'm taking Japanese, so I can understand game trailers! (If you don't know EO (Etrian Odyssey) I totally recommend it. You could start with EOI (Etrian Odyssey 1), and work your way up to EOIV (Etrian Odyssey 4). Or you could start with EOU (Etrian Odyssey Untold (:the Millennium Girl)) the remake of EOI. *I swear, these games have better graphics than some console games.*

Could I ask why some fans do not like how EO has a story mode? Untold had both Classic and story-mode, so it seems like it should sate everyone (Well received among several critics), but whenever story mode is mentioned some fans tend to get angered. Personally, it being my first venture into EO I thought it was pretty good. It gave me a drive to progress through the game to learn more of the story and the great gameplay and mechanics kept me busy for hours. Just curious is all. Like I said, new fan to the EO franchise, so I may be missing pieces of the puzzle.

They say it runs counter to the idea the series was built on, to have a fully custom party. I don't really get it either, it's not like they lose anything. Though I guess they are bitter that the strongest katana in Untold is unlocked at the end of story mode, the one mode where you normally have no use for katanas.

natchu96 The problem is that the Story mode has a lot of extra exclusive stuff, such as classes, bosses, and dungeon. So in order to 100% the game you have to play through the story mode.

natchu96 Ah, so that's the main reason why. Story mode has more exclusive content, so those who just play classic mode can't access it. I can see why then, I guess for veterans of the series classic mode is more of their thing. As a newcomer to it, I enjoyed both.
