Finally...just finally...someone put the feelings and thoughts I have of Johan in a video. I swear...from what I got in this video, I think you and I drew the same conclusion at the end of the series. A lot of people wrote essays that Johan was the devil incarnate, that one of his goals was to torture and torment Anna. They dismiss him as being this untouchable, unmovable Monster. But they are wrong. I was very confused about the complexities of Johan's character up until the last handful of episodes. It became very clear to me that Johan was hurting the entire time. Everything he did, even though he was wrong, was for Anna and out of his own pain. In his own twisted way and view on things, he was protecting her. He killed every "parental" figure they had because he was betrayed by every adult figure in his life so far. They kept torturing them, mainly his sister and separating them. So he would kill and runaway from "the monster". Then when Anna found out about the blood on his hands that fateful night, he realized he was now also one of the people who hurt her and wanted to die. He asked her to shoot him and run - in an attempt to finally liberate her from the horrific life they had to lead up until now. But when he was brought back and realized the gravity behind his methods, seeing how terrified Anna was of him - he started to cry. Throughout the series you see that he is trying to wipe everyone who knew of what happened to Anna/him off the face of the earth. He did not want Anna to remember. So when it was revealed she did remember, he mourned. She said "he had a smile but seemed like he was crying. I never seen such an expression on his face before." and then Johan goes on to commit the "perfect suicide." He was ready to die but you can see his conviction began to slip away when Anna forgave him and also in how Tenma was not killing him ruthlessly like he always thought. Johan in his final moments was cracking and finally falling apart. Johan has never shown to take any kind of sick satisfaction from killing unlike all the other serial killers shown being interviewed. Despite his callousness and his lack of care for life - Johan despite how much of a "monster" he was, very clearly had humanity and had love....for his sister most of all. To say Johann, despite being hailed as the Monster of the series, had no love or humanity in him and was merely the Devil himself...completely missed the point of the story... He was a victim and the world created the beast that consumed him. And with that misguidance came his plan to bloody his hands so that there would no longer be anyone left that would hurt/torture him or Anna. That was his initial plan as a child, them no longer living in fear... This show breaks my heart.

Seriously thank you. I have been scouring the comments to find an interpretations that is resonant with mine. That by the end, we only got to see the bigger monsters that roam about the earth- the monsters that created personas like Johan, Grimmer, Roberto,etc. There is a significant lack of pleasure in his killings and a significant lack of egotism in his ways, which only emphasises his non- identity. I always felt like Johan took the darkness away from Anna, to save her in a way and himself got consumed by it. He took away her painful memories, experiences and made them his own. And by the end of monster, the very people responsible for whatever had happened in their lives had disappeared. That is what Johan was.

@@dreamiesnoona6423 I wrote a 2 part in depth essay concerning these theories if you'd like to read them. I'm relieved you had the same interpretation. I depict them in my own amvs. I think the end of the Nameless Monster book is often misunderstood. When the Monster known as Johan devours the other Monster that went West, I believe that depicted Johan consuming Anna's inner Monster so that only he was left as the Nameless Monster. And he does this when he leaves her behind with the Fortners and gives her a new name, new identity apart from him so she can heal.

@@xPrincessGarnetXVI Yes! I would love to read your interpretations. Wow! I didn't think about the symbolism of Johan eating the other monster. It makes so much sense! Now that you mention it, the book makes even more sense. The ones who made the deal with the monster except the prince did so to gain in selfish ways and so the monster devoured them. Johan did target people who were actually corrupt-minded to carry out his work. He took up personas other than Johan too. But he stopped at Johan. In Munich, we saw he took the name again from a person who had prematurely passed away and he stuck with it. That is just like the prince who made a deal with the monster in order to gain his health. And the monster stuck with the name Johan for Johan is such a good name. I realise I might be stretching it but it just suddenly dawned on me while reading your interpretation.

Oh god I am in tears. This is one of my favorite series ever and Johan was my favorite character. So much so that I want to name a son after him, no lie. Thank you so much for the stunning video that shows his point of view. For every story there are two sides, and the show kept making him into this evil monster (hence the name lol) but he was just a lost soul tortured by his own messed up mind.

This is so beautiful, he isn't some angel but all he did started with wanting to protect his sister, the only person he trusted and felt love for, the betrayal he felt from their mother to even want to choose between her two children He had no name and little sense of identity and even lost that to his sister, to stop her from being the monster she was pushed to be, she was traumatised and missed out on a crucial thing Franz Bonaparta said "Human beings can become anything, that's why you must never become monsters". Johan thought of Franz as the monster who would come after them, killed people and erased their trail, eventually becoming like the monster he was trying to protect themselves from and told her "Shoot Me" _The God of Peace looked into the Mirror and he saw a Devil. "Who could live in peace with a devil?" So he..._
