PLEASE NOTE: On the first slide, I review the general concepts of low-energy filtration and the effect on kVP that applies to general radiology and mammography. However, mammography has the special case of higher energy filtration with the filters I mention in the following slides. When you use these higher energy filters you are logically NOT INCREASING YOUR AVG KVP or HVL. I should have clarified that in the video! Thanks!

So, the higher energy rays are absorbed by the Mo filter (due to the increase of the cross section of the photo electronic phenomenon at that energy) which then yields back the characteristic x rays and the low energy rays are absorbed due to the width of the filter (the same thing that happens with the Al filter). So we are left with mostly the characteristic radiation.

Anyone knows how to measure snrin^2 for calculating DQE in mammography? But with spesific kvp and type of filter which is not available in the book

So how have the lower energies been filtered in this spectrum. With Al filters?

Yes through inherent filtration

I believe that the low energy rays are absorbed due to the width of the filter, as it happens with any other filter in an x ray tube. Like the Al filter. At low energies the photoelectric phenomenon is stronger and most of the radiation is absorbed.

This is because the high attenuation beyond the k edge of the Mo filter occurs at the characteristic x ray energies of Rh
