..and they were just more than "foo..off"-band, so proffs, too. If you think Poly when at age of 18-19 it's unbelievable how talented woman she was back then.

X-Ray Spex were one of the tightest, loudest rocking bands to come out of London in the late 70s. I saw them twice and both times they smashed it. You just had to dance, they were that infectious. 🙄 "I wanna be a frozen pea" they just don't write lyrics like that today... R.I.P Poly, you little frozen pea.😇💋

I happened upon them at the Roxy in April of 77 -- and was stunned how good they were. Poly was wandering around afterwards and I said, "You're gonna go down well in the States. They've never seen anything like it," and she looked at me like I was insane.

When I first heard women vocals and saxophone, I was confused, but then came to love X-Ray Spex (and Penetration). Much better than all of the earlier crap female punk 'artists'. Poly Styrene is up there with S Sioux. Ground-breaking music.

I'm excited seeing these videos of early punk bands so let's continue. These films are of tremendous historical value, providing a visual compliment to a band's recorded catalog. And to see a band in action is priceless. X-Ray Spex are one of the very best of the 1977 British punk bands. They are fronted by one of the most unique singers in all of punk. Poly Styrene (Born Marianne Joan Elliot-Said) with her look, her braces and her voice is a presence you can not take your eyes off. Her voice has been described as "effervescently discordant" "powerful enough to drill holes through sheet metal" and "yowling witty lyrics with all the delicacy of a cat in heat." Their first single O Bondage! Up Yours!/ I Am a Cliche (September 1977) is a classic punk single and their debut album Germ Free Adolescents (November 1978) is a perfect picture of punk youth excitement in London 1977-78. Very few punk bands would have the courage to use a saxophone, but here it's abrasive touches add immeasurably to the music. There seems to be a wide range of opinions as to when this video was shot. My guess is the Hope & Anchor festival between November 22--December 15, 1977. This is part 1. Next up is part 2. This band is really something special and I know you will love them.

WHERE'S PART 2 !?!? Her documentary is out now . Got a full page rave in the New York Times !! Respect where respect is due ...40 years later.
A true one-off: Poly was anything but your stereotypical punk, but by belting out intelligent & witty lyrics backed by some of the catchiest tunes of the day she nailed her claim to immortality. Besides introducing us to the joys of punk sax, the early lineup's notable for boasting not just one but two outstanding chanteuses, Poly and Lora on the aforementioned instrument: we really were spoiled. Fantastic stuff.

@TalkToTheBody That isn't Jordon. Its Siouxie on Poly's right. This clip was taken in 1976 not 78 as it says. You are right the Banshees formed in late 76. I have met Siouxie on many occasions, not as early as this video but in 1980 and beyond. I know of the Bromlet Contingent of course and know of Jordon. But its definatly Siouxie, maybe she was with the Banshees then but its definatly her.
