*X-Rite has transitioned its Photo & Video Products Portfolio to Calibrite, a newly formed color management company. Find out more about this transition here • Introducing Calibrite ...
This video will walk you thought the similarity, differences, and compare X-Rite i1Display Studio, i1Display Pro and i1Display Pro Plus Colorimeter Devices and help you choose the one that best fit with your creative and workflow needs. The i1Display Studio is a great starter device for anyone getting into display calibration and color management. It uses i1Studio software, which uses the same advanced algorithm to calibrate displays similar to i1Profiler but with options simplified for beginners. i1Display Studio is not compatible with 3rd Party software so it can't be use with other display manufacturer softwares, for instance BenQ SW line Palette Master Element software, or any other manufacturer for that matter. The same goes with Atomos Calibration as well as many other filed recorders.
For greater control over display profile creation, choose the i1Display Pro or Pro Plus, with these devices you'll be using X-Rite full feature software called i1Profiler. A few things that this can do compared to i1Studio is Profile QA aka Validation, Display Uniformity test, contrast control during display calibration, custom gamma curve settings and many more.
Hardware wise iDisplay Studio is similar to the i1Display Pro in measurement capabilities, where they both can calibrate displays up to 1000 nits brightness. The i1Display Pro is slightly faster at measuring compared to the i1Display Studio. While the i1Display Pro Plus can calibrate displays up to 2000 nits brightness. And there are some differences for video users as well, for instance the i1Display Pro Plus can calibrate display to BT1886 Gamma curve where the i1Display Pro can't do this and the sensitivity increase for this device also benefit darker tones calibration as well, where it can measure it better and more accurately. Find out more intricacies in the video.
UPDATE: the guide shown in this video will work for Calibrite Devices and ColorChecker Profiler (ccProfile) as well. There may be some GUI and branding changes, however, the software fundamental is still the same.
If you are unfamiliar X-Rite Transitioned this consumer product portfolio to a newly formed company called Calibrite, which is short for Calibration Done Right, on July 1st, 2021.

@@ArtIsRight Thank you for this opportunity. I was curious whether it's a worthwhile long-term investment to immediately jump to the X-Rite I1STUDIO: I'd like to print more, and I'd like to better understand how to calibrate against a printer. Even if the difference is 250€ where I am, I want to believe the investment pays off over time in time and printing-samples. But maybe that's overkill? Likewise, I read about 'drifting' of colorimeters vs spectrometers, and I am wondering how important an issue this becomes over time (and what span of time / calibrations). Would this possibly also add to upgrading immediately to the X-Rite I1STUDIO? Thank you so much for your support, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
@ArtIsRight

I would go for the i1studio, as far as drifting, this can happen with electronic sensor as they age. The past the sensors are build with material that deteriorate over time. Now a days the sensors are more stable and much less prone to these issues. For instance, I have an i1Display Pro that is about 10 years old now and the result are still inline with the new colorimeter that I have. So I would not worry too much about that.

Great explanation. Do you know or have you tested the i1 Studio (the spectrophotometer not the i1 Display Studio) and how does it compare to the i1 Display Pro Plus??. I have the i1Studio which is a remarkable device for paper calibration etc (which I absolutely need) for the price compared to a decade ago. I was wondering if the i1 Display Pro Plus would do a better job on my newer BenQ SW monitors for video. Like many I am in the position where I now need to do both print and video work and am wondering if I actually NEED another calibration device (like the i1 Pro Plus) for some of the newer monitors and gammas I am starting to see used for HDR etc or am I going to be fine with the i1 Studio?

I have tested them all. The short answer is to buy the device based on your needs. So if you need display calibrating and printing, i1Studio is your best bet. Just get the one that will do it all.

Hello, you were discussing how the X-Rite i1Display Studio does not interact with third party hardware calibrated displays. I'm struggling to tell whether the 'True Color Technology' is this third party hardware calibration that you were discussing. 'True Color' has an option to import profiles so I'm curious whether a profile developed by X-Rite i1Display Studio will be applicable to 'True Color.'

Hey! Thanks for doing these videos. I've learned a lot already and since I'm about to upgrade my old monitor (and calibrator spyder) and in the market for a new one I'm researching to be able to make an educated decision. I still have some questions regarding a few things if I may. :) 1. When calibrating a monitor with hardware calibration capabilities (like the SW271 for example) what color mode do you set the monitor to? Adobe RGB? Does the Palette Master Element HW calibrating software take the selected profile into account when it does the calibration? Or does it calibrate on a hardware level and display the color gamut selected in the color mode menu afterwards? I mean if I run the HW calibration and I have srgb selected in the monitor osd menu versus if I have adobe rgb selected? Do I need to calibrate for each profile? I guess not if I buy an SW but what about a PD? 2. What is the default color profile selected in the SW line of monitors? PD? 3. If I calibrate the chip in an SW monitor and select the sRGB profile will it clip the colors that sRGB can't display but it will show all the colors if I change to AdobeRGB? 4. If you keep switching between B&W, sRGB, AdobeRGB and so on, frequently, will that take the calibration "wear out" faster? I mean will you need to calibrate the display more often versus a scenario where you just use the display in AdobeRGB all the time? 5. With software calibrated screens like the PD3420Q, after you calibrate your display the software creates an ICC profile right? Same with the SW line, only the SW saves the profile to the chip inside the monitor? Is this correct? Does the SW save it only to the chip or your operating system as well? 6. If I plan on printing photos via a printing company and I download the ICC profile provided by the company for their printers, do I need to edit my photos (in photoshop for example) with soft proofing on? Using the ICC profile provided by them? Or should I just use the default profile (AdobeRGB with the SW line and P3 with the PD line) and send them the files with the embeded color profiles on my end? What is your experience? 7. Is there really a big, noticeable difference between printing work made on a PD3420Q vs an SW271 or SW321C for that matter? I mean DCI P3 versus AdobeRGB. From what I can tell both are pretty big and the difference is that AdobeRGB has a bit more reach in green and blue while DCI P3 encompasses more colors in the yellow, red range. 8. If I go with the PD3420Q and the calibration report from factory states a delta e of 2 for example and I software calibrate the monitor, will I be able to achieve higher precision or only factory calibrated best values can be expected / achieved? Also if I get a copy with a better delta e value, like delta e 1 will there be a noticeable difference? Also, are software calibrations more prone to go out of whack more often compared to hardware calibrated ones? Especially in the case of switching profiles often in the menus? I know this is a lot, but these details are still not clear to me and I would appreciate it greatly if you could answer them. I'm sure there are others out there who would like to know the answers to these questions. Thanks for replying to my previous question on one of your other videos btw. I'm subscribed, I like and have also notifications turned on :) You create informative content, worth watching! Cheers and thank you in advance.

1. It does not matter what color mode you choose. PME put the display into the calibration slot that you want to use and null all of the system profiles. Color gamut is chosen in PME under RGB Primary. With the SW you should not use the precalibrated modes. With the PD you have to software calibrate each mode that you want to use. 2. SW Adobe RGB, PD Display P3 3. Gamut will be based on the RGB, smaller will show smaller, larger - larger etc. 4. That is the first time that I got this question and I never thought of it that way, but no, it will not shift faster or slower because of this. 5. Yes with PD the software would generate either icc or icm profile. SW with PME will generate a profile as well. This will explain your question kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZjSY6Ntn6tmpJI You also need both. Watch the video. 6. I would edit normally and then soft proof with the provided icc at the end and make the final adjustments there. You should have the original edit save somewhere and edit a copy with soft proofing but that is what I recommend. Color profile embedding would be on the lab that you are using, most request sRGB. 7. If you look at the gamut for DCI-P3 vs Adobe RGB there is a big different, those are not small changes. As far as will you notice the difference you have to remember that print profile are smaller with both of these profiles and some sometime larger than sRGB. So a compromise must be made somewhere. You are buying a hardware calibrated display to eliminate tonal compressions and expansions from software calibration icc profile that remap the video card color output. 8. Factory calibration report give you an idea of your screen. Doing a calibration on your end will ensure greater accuracy because you are now matching or paring the display to the out put with icc profile. Delta e variation between 1 and 2 are visually imperceptible. All calibration will shift over time because the display back light and LCD is constantly changing and aging, but one would not be faster than another. I'll probably take these question and make it into a video. Hope this helps. :)

@@ArtIsRight WoW! First of all, a HUGE thank you for taking the time to answer! You mentioned this in previous videos and I think you said you'll demonstrate in a future video. "You are buying a hardware calibrated display to eliminate tonal compressions and expansions from software calibration icc profile that remap the video card color output." - I'm really looking forward to seeing some examples demonstrated visually when it comes to tonal compression. It would help a lot of people make up their minds on which line of monitors to invest into. Me included. :) I know people's needs vary and this brings me to the other thing I wanted to touch on which is: If most printing labs request sRGB... and most people are limited to seeing sRGB because of their monitors why invest in anything above 100% sRGB coverage?! This reminds me of Ken Rockwell's old article about sRGB vs. Adobe RGB. Maybe simplifying workflow really would be better / cheaper / simpler and I wouldn't loose sleep over it at night but I guess once you go AdobeRGB, you can never go back :)) Colorimeters are a must either way. Last but not least, I'm currently using a spyder 3, (going to upgrate to i1Display Pro or Plus when I pull the trigger on the new monitor) and I find that the software that comes with the device does not do as good / thorough of a job as one of the popular free calibration softwares out there called DisplayCal. Some say they choose to use their i1-s with it instead of the native software that comes with the i1-s. Any thoughts about this? ...and the last question :) I promise! Did you try calibrating DirectLED (FLAD) or Mini LED displays with the i1 Pro or the Plus? Can they handle it?

"You mentioned this in previous videos and I think you said you'll demonstrate in a future video. :)" This is really hard to demonstrate, most of the time visually we might not see a difference but the tones are starting to degrade in the signal. It is mostly 0 and 1 with more rounding errors. This is almost like 8 vs 16 bit in Photoshop, only on edge cases where you will see this. For normal and even pursing the computing you might not see this. About color space you can simplify what you do or take it to the edge of the universe for complexity, this is one where you have to find your own balance. The thing is that I will always edit my images in the largest color space possible, the color space for print is larger than sRGB and it will not be small forever. However, if you choose to go with sRGB that is your choice, but if you reprint in the future and there're better paper then it would be hard to go back especially once you undercut the gamut of your file in the final edit. This can be a chicken and egg debate, one that can be more opinion based than fact. Have not test Mini LED calibration yet, they are just starting to come out now and there are downside of eye fatigue with mini LED. So hopefully once these issues are fix and technology become better I'll have a chance to test it. About using display cal, if you have see the comment on my channel, I deter people from it because of software licensing issues and accuracy. Some say that it is better, and take it as gospel, personally with calibration because at the essence of it is a controlled random sample in time I would not worry about it too much unless the result is really bad. About the licensing issue, DisplayCal used free drives for the sensor most of the time and these drivers are generally not optimized as well as the people who made and integrate them. Personally i1Profiler is one of the best software calibration program out there, some say otherwise, but again this is all opinion based and less reliant on fact. Cheers.

I've seen some videos that report sRGB of such devices but I don't understand how it is possible without running the display calibration software on that device, which is impossible as they are not computers? - You have the right idea, the key here is that they don't tell you how it is done. So my guess would be on the honest side of things, lots of research to find out what panel is used and defer the spec from there. Worse case, pure spoliation and guess with some unscientific method of substantiation in between. Unless they have manufacture tools, which most don't.

Hello Art!! I have LG ultrafine monitor that has HDR10 and planning to get the x-rite calibrator but I'm confused about which one would I get. Any monitor that has an HDR display would be recommended to use the pro plus? Thank you
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessary, you should look at the max brightness of your LG monitor. It probably does not exceed 1000 nits, you are really look at between 600-800 nits, so technically speaking Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro (formerly i1Display Pro) would do just fine. But if you want to have a future proof purchase, I would choose the ColorChecker Display Plus (Formerly i1Display Pro Plus). This latter device can calibrate display up to 2000 nits in brightness. And just because a display has HDR10 it does not mean that it will exceed 1000 nits, most displays don't. Lastly find out more about Calibrite Here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZDYg3xrptB1oqM

Hi Art, Great comparison video. I have the Display Plus and have successfully software calibrated my external monitor, Windows 11. Do you have a video for calibrating an OLED TV such as LG C9 which I believe has it's own pattern generator. So how to operate ccProfiler and the Display Plus with my OLED TV? Generally I am driving my panel with Nvidia Shield Kodi player. I would have 2 profiles, normal 8bit SDR BT709 and 10bit HDR BT2020 color spaces. Thanks!
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 жыл бұрын
So these devices and the software that you have can't really be used to calibrate TV displays. If the source is from the computer yes you can calibrate it but it is a computer output calibration and not a TV calibration in any sense. To do TV calibration you would need to use a software such as CalMan that cost $3K per license per year, a patter generator box and a color radiometer, all of which are expensive and specific equipment.

Art, this is a great video and answered so many of my questions. I've decided I don't need the Pro or Pro Plus and I'll be fine with the Studio since I don't plan on getting hardware calibrated monitors (out of my budget). My question is: I have two LG 27UD58 monitors. I've noticed that one is a bit 'warmer' in colour than the other. I'd like to calibrate both of them so they are accurate. Will the Studio allow me to do that? Or can it only have one 'profile' for the graphics card, therefore effecting both monitors, resulting in one of my monitors being calibrated and the other still being slightly different?

@@ArtIsRight thank you. I was a bit confused because at 18:17 in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5m5l6qNbrF-bqc you mention that the graphics card can only output one LUT.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that is correct. So we must separate the LUT and the ICC, they are not the same. LUT is the look up table information. And on most computers the GPU will only output 1 LUT. Meaning if you have multiple software calibrated displays, say display a & b. The GPU will output a single LUT based on display A and that is it. But each display can still have its own ICC profile. This in turn would mean that display B may not be as accurate as display A since it is running on the LUT output based on display A. This said, do you really need to worry about any of this, not so much. Most of the time, normal human visual reference will not be able to detect these minutia variations. And accuracy does matter but at the end of the day, we are all living in a margin of error world and this margin of error is more than acceptable!

Fantastic video Art. It's very clear now which calibrator to pick from. I am starting to work with 8k video in Davinci Resolve, and really want to be able to render video in HDR Dolby Vision. I know that for that, ideally I should use a $30,000 reference monitor, however some KZbinrs that do color grading have recommended using a LG OLED TV. Every year LG tvs are brighter and less prone to burn in. I wanted to ask you if you can make a video calibrating an LG OLED tv for working in Davinci Resolve. Also, as a separate question. Video editors and color grading experts also recommend using a Video Capture card like the Blackmagic Design Decklink 8K Pro Cinema Capture Card. I understand that having a video capture card bypasses your operating system color management. Can you explain the logic behind and how to color calibrate if you have a workstation with a video capture card? Thank you very much.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 жыл бұрын
TV calibration would be similar to what I have shown in my various other calibration videos on this channel. The issue with TV is that is there are so many signal processing going and yes it will work but it will never be neutral no matter how much calibration you do. So my advise is to put the display in the most neutral mode possible and do the calibration from there. Knowing that no consumer calibration solution right now can calibrate HDR at REC 2020. So even if you use these X-Rite devices you are still calibrating at SDR. Also watch this kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp3Yo4WnZs56hqM The logic would be if you use a device like that don't calibrate the display if you have a software calibrated display. If you have a hardware calibrated display run the calibration with the proprietary software first without the device and then after you are done with the calibration put in the device to get the best color possible. If you ask me, it makes sense to by pass the OS color management but then you are dealing with how displays are calibrated from the factory and there's not much controlling that. So in the end color management, correction and grading is a mindset, what you think is right, how it should look and how it looks in the end. The goal is to get them close but they will never match 100%

For TV calibration that is another topic all together. In short if you the source to the TV is from your computer then yes you can calibrated it. HDR1000 is brightness, REC 709 is color gamut. i1Display Pro is the equivalent of Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro, and both are previous gen devices, the new one that replace these 2 is the Calibrite Display Pro HL, which can calibrate displays up to 3000 nits, so it will fit what you need. The newer SL or previous generation device won't work for HDR calibration.

"i1Display Studio not open to 3rd-Party Software" *Looks at DisplayCAL with a knowing wink*

Right, you are totally missing the point. DisplayCal is a 3rd party software yes but they don't license X-Rite driver, they use a generic Argyll CMS driver that is totally different and less optimized. 3rd party software referred to here are ones that properly license X-Rite driver, such as BenQ, Eizo, CalMAN etc.

@@ArtIsRight Do you know what exactly you lose when using DisplayCal? When you say it's less optimized does that mean you are losing features or is the color accuracy going to be off? I would like to understand and know more because I was always under the impression that DisplayCal is good software and is commonly recommended in forums such as Reddit? I appreciate the informative video hopefully you can point me in the right direction here haha, thanks again.

Regarding loosing something with DisplayCal, at the end of the day it is simply a display calibration software, are you loosing anything, for straight forward calibration no. If you want more advanced control then you may be missing out some features such as black point set based on icc print profile. Less optimized meaning that these hardware companies spend a significant amount of resources coding and optimizing the drivers for the device to ensure the most accurate performance. DisplayCal in many instances use ArgyllCMS driver, which is open source, which is fine. I know diehard fan will say that there are lots of smart people working on it, yes and probably true. But at the end of the day, vertical integration and resources dedicating to developing these software and drivers is what I consider to be better. Plus there are proprietary codes and information that the company may have on the sensors that open source might not due in part to the lack of proper licensing. Yes many people prefer display cal but if you really have a conversion with many of the engineers in the ICC consortium their opinion would be otherwise. From my perspective, I have tested out display cal in the past and wound not personally recommend it over something like i1Profiler but some thinks otherwise. And to further clarify what I said in the video, i1Display Studio is not compatible with, other properly license X-Rite driver, to run on 3rd party software.
