I think the Nightcrawler Attack scene is the original Quicksilver Save scene. Understanding why one is great explains the other. They aren't the same (Pietro is moving so fast his scenes are actually slower than Kurt's quick jumps) but they evoke the same reaction of "YEAH! LET'S GO!" in its viewers.

When I told him I wanted to see this movie I remember him being. Uh. You know when you can tell someone is trying hard not to be rude or mean because they don't want to hurt your feelings or offend you? He was not really all that enthused lmao Fast forward to us sitting in the theater when this opening shows and I just remember him leaning over to me and whispering 'This is pretty cool' haha

And even then, it does have well done serious scenes. I kind of agree with Doug on the first Spider-Man though, if you're not looking at it as a borderline comedy, it can be tough to get through. Hasn't aged too well either.

@@TechnologicallyTechnical I think that movie does a tonal high-wire act. All 3 of them have aged extremely well. Those movies play the same way now they did then, calling back to the history of cinema. Those 3 spiderman movies would work if released today or if released in 1966. They're all timeless, and pretty great. I don't get why goofy means bad. The Green Goblin and Dafoe's portrayal of him is GOOFY, but he's also terrifying, smart, and brutal. Just like the comics. I honestly don't understand how you can read those books, and not think the goofiness and quality of those movies aren't in line with the BEST Spiderman comic stories.
@TechnologicallyTechnical
@TechnologicallyTechnical 5 жыл бұрын
@@iansmart4158 The CG, certain plot/writing tropes, the songs surrounding the film (not the score) and the general style of filming for the first Spider-Man all give it away as an early 2000's superhero film. Spider-Man 2 has aged a bit, but it's not as clear as in Spider-Man. Even when the effects in Spider-Man 2 aren't good, it's subtle enough that you have to be looking for the bad effects in order to really notice them. They also swapped writers for Spider-Man 2. A typical Hollywood blockbuster writer wrote the first Spider-Man and an award winning book writer was hired for Spider-Man 2, and it really shows. Spider-Man 1 really didn't have much depth whereas Spider-Man 2 did have quite of bit of depth to it by diving into what makes Spider-Man Spider-Man outside of just the basic stuff like swinging around & fighting crime. As for Spider-Man 3, I've noticed lately that it's been popular to love the film suddenly, and I think that's just kids who grew up with it looking at it through nostalgia tinted glasses. The film's all over the place, the effects have aged terribly (except for Sandman), Eddie in that film sucked, Gwen came out of left field and was unnecessary, it was advertised as being super dark when certain parts got too goofy even by Sam Raimi Spider-Man standards, and the Harry/Peter conflict should've been the core of the film. I'm glad Raimi took such a firm stance on having his way with Spider-Man 4 (even though it resulted in the film never being made) because if the studio had gotten its way with Spider-Man 4, then it just would've been another Batman & Robin/Superman 4, and I'm so glad Raimi respected the franchise enough to not let that happen to it.
@iansmart4158
@iansmart4158 5 жыл бұрын
@@TechnologicallyTechnical I disagree. there are definitely some effects that don't work, but I'd argue they're as good as the Oscar nominated Black Panther, and I chalk that up to history. It's like counting the effects of The Terminator or T2 against it's prowess as a piece of action filmmaking. different time, and all this stuff is gonna look outdated in a matter of decades, so effects really don't bother me much. The pop music associated with the film only really comes into play during the credits. I was aware of it, but if you don't know the songs, they don't really impact the movie in any meaningful way. In terms of the early 2000s aesthetic on the first. Sure there's some, but Id say Raimi's previous film (The Gift) was more in line with the aesthtecs of the time. I mean, realistically, Spider-Man (2002) looks more expressive than most of the MCU stuff today. And the depth thing. I mean, I guess, but what Spider-Man does with visuals and the aesthetic choices throughout the films IS the depth in that film. It's a living breathing comic book with all the broad pathos, slightly hyper-real world building, and dynamics between colorful characters that the best mainstream comics are. Yeah, Spider-Man 2 has more humanity at it's core (and is perfect, so nothing really compares) but Spider-Man (2002) is mythic (the monologues that bookend the film have a sort of Tall-Tale aspect to them). It's broad in a way that works, and relatable in its intentions. Even the villain is kind of one note in the way iconic supehero villains are. (but I'd argue that rooftop convo with GG, is among the most well written and physically performed stuff you're likely to see in mainstream blockbusters). And Spider-Man 3 still slaps. It has a ton of issues (pacing, weird performance, the story never quite clicking), but what it does right (sandman, making you feel Peter's rage through the black suit) hasn't really been done nearly as well in other similar fair. It's not as perfect as the previous 2, but it's telling a story about Hubris and expectation that has not (and probably never will be) touched on in these movies again. God's having to deal with their humanity. That's Spider-Man 3. That movie ends, not with a swing or a kiss or triumphant gesture, but 2 people holding each other because they'd rather at least have each other than be alone and weak. They need the embrace of the one person that truly knows them, because they know this life isn't forever. THAT'S THE ENDING OF A SUPERHERO MOVIE! We gotta put respek on Raimi's name. Dude created some truly singular work (even if all of it isn't perfect. Oh, and BDH as Gwen Stacy is SO CHARMING; I don't care how she got there, I'm just happy I got to enjoy that performance).

I love it when you two practically put yourselves down when you're complimenting something in these movies, because I get it, it hurts to compliment something that seems to actively attack a franchise you love at times. My dudes, it's totally okay to think that Mystique is cool in these films. Her, Beast, Night Crawler, Professor X, Logan, and Magneto were all perfectly cast for these. The problem is that they don't always have cool things for these amazingly cast performers to actually do xD .

@@RickyUzumaki993 Yeah, that was a ridiculous conclusion they had. Freakin' Phoenix was coming next movie! Using Stryker was a major case of restraint even if his goal was to eradicate mutants. They took a forgotten storyline with a minor villain and made it potent enough to say that they can't top it, even with a Top 3 legendary comic story arc? And this incredible success is somehow used against it? Give me a break. As for the plot, it was well focused for an ensemble movie. The threads are always coming together and converging on the same spot. Despite their banging on about a few scenes with Xavier, they used Wolverine's group as the focal point, gathering the rest of the cast for the climax. It was a well put together movie. Frankly, I'll take it over Infinity War any day.

7:40 The phoenix was first set up in the first movie. Pay attention to how Magneto's mutant aura affects Jean. Also, why do you guys keep confusing subtlety with "boring"? 9:20 Yes, he has discovered a lot in this movie. In the first movie, it was unrevealed how Logan got his adamantium skeleton and why. In this movie it is explained. And in the very scene you're bashing. 11:05 Yes, she has to do it from the outside because that's the only way she can save them without letting the phoenix harm her friends. 11:48 No that wasn't a threat. He was stating that they'll hope he'll make the more reasonable decision by not dividing mutants and humans further apart. 12:48 Yes Doug, yes they did establish that. Did you even watch these movies? You've become cinematically illiterate, guys. You obviously don't understand proper storytelling and narrative. And where you trying to be funny when you said Xavier tried to wipe out humanity or did you forget that he was under Stryker's control?
@comiccinema8177

7:40 They don’t set up one of the most important parts of the story being her motherly nature so it’s all setup and no real payoff Also, you can make subtlety while still making a colorful and entertaining bombastic comic book movie. Being grey and static is inexcusable. 9:20 They showed that shit a bunch of times in the first one so we already knew this. It’s not a grand reveal. 11:05 How does she know the Phoenix is that dangerous? Up to this point it’s a subtle fear she had but there are many other options. Including Storm moving the water or Nightcrawler teleporting them away 11:48 why did he do it in the most terrifying and threatening way possible? What’s the point of the scary lightning strikes? Wouldn’t a less scary way be more effective in communicating that you’re not a threat? 12:48 That was more a joke on what the characters actually discussed amongst themselves not what we saw and not serious critique I think you need to be willing to see some flaws in a very static and dull Bryan Singer movie. And the joke about Xavier almost killing humanity is that it makes no sense anyone would be on his side even if he was mind controlled.

Just want to point out; even though the X-Men's jet is /called/ "the Blackbird", it is NOT an SR71. It is considerably larger, large enough to function as a transport for about a dozen people. The SR71 interior is tiny and cramped, most of it is occupied by advanced photography, surveillance, and relay equipment. Plus, it's the interior layout of a two-seat jet fighter (pilot and photographer/radio operator seated one behind the other).
