Rear PTO Installation on John Deere X738

I just did my 738 today. It took about 2hrs to do. Mine is an older 2013 model and it still went very smooth. Excellent engineering on deers parts.

I might do this to run the 7500 watt northern tool generator

What would you need to run with the generator? The X738 gas or X758 diesel both are rated at 18 HP rear PTO. Both would need to be run at near max RPM to generate the minimum 14 HP needed for a 7500 watt generator. With a 5.2 Gallon/20 liter fuel tank you should see between 4.7 to 6.2 hours of run time. Also you would be adding a lot of hours to your tractor depending on how long you run the generator. The only benefit over a stand alone generator is the size of the generator being smaller and no engine on the generator needing maintenance. Any ways you may have already figured all this out but you can buy a 7500 watt generator for less then the cost of the PTO kit. If you still think the PTO driven generator has the advantage for you I would like to hear your thoughts on it.

@@twotonebrute yea i hear your points. I currently run a generac 6500e to power the majority of my house, minus an electric dryer. The main reason I would do this is to have one less engine to maintain and having it be diesel which will hopefully continue to be very reliable and efficient. The generator wouldn’t be used very often so the lifespan of the diesel vs gas is also a pro.

Is the tranmission / pto noisier now with the new pto kit installed..sounds a bit noisy? Good job on the video installation!

I haven't noticed any additional noise from the Rear PTO since installation.

@@twotonebrute mine definitely makes some noise at idle...completely goes away at higher rpm. I know it's installed correctly including the snap ring and rough side out. Others have complained of pto noise too. I would like to find an X series to compare to.

@bobjohnson4025 just installed pto on my 758 and about half throttle or less mine is noisy but at wide open throttle it's quiet

The video had lots of helpful hints. Thanks! However, the JD paper instructions nor your video seem to mention how much hydraulic oil will now be needed to fill the transmission back up. Also I'm assuming there is now extra capacity for oil because of the pto that was just added.

Sorry I don't know the exact amount of oil to put back in it. I always buy the Hy Guard Low Viscosity fluid by the gallon as I'm always replacing some oil every time I connect a new hydraulic attachment. Nice video. There's another video on the rear PTO install on X series where the poor guy broke his the first second he turned it on. The dealer said he didn't properly torque everything down. You mention a specific torque sequence in your video. Where did you get that sequence from, was it in the directions of the kit?

Yes, all the torque specifications and torque sequences are in the instructional manual.

Is there a gasket with the new cover or did you use a sealant?

There is an O Ring included with the cover. You can see it at around 3:20 in the video. No sealant or gasket is needed.

How do you switch from rear to mid mount PTO on a x758

If you have added a rear PTO to you X758 you can select between rear and mid pto on the selector behind the left rear tire. If you don't have a rear pto there isn't an option and it till be mid pto only.

How do you turn the rear pto off when not in use?

The yellow handed lever on the left side engages and disengages the PTO. You can select Mid PTO only. Mid and Rear PTO, or just the Rear PTO.

Is the PTO supposed to be noisy?

I really don't notice much noise. You can hear how much noise when it was first installed in the video. There is really no noticeable noise now. Other people have commented theirs have been noisy.

The kit is not cheap. It was $960 If I remember correctly. I didn't add it until I actually needed it. I added it so I can run a tiller and used it to remove 4 inches of topsoil from 6800 square feet of my neighbors yard.
