Here is the overclocking tutorial for X79, which oddly enough you guys were requesting a lot in the comments section as of recent! Today we are using the 1680 v2, which is an ivy bridge-e based variant, though I talk about how to overclock the i7-3930k and other sandy bridge based variants too.

This should destroy it (I use an x58 Xeon, x5675 @4.2ghz and love it!), but this CPU still costs like £500/$700 used. The x58 chips are still the absolute best performance for the price if you own an x58 motherboard or can get one for a decent price.

I have both varients, x5650 @ 4.6ghz and 3930k(1650) @4.8ghz both six cores. X5650 CB stock low 600's overclocked = 1000s. 3930k stock cb 650 overclock 1200s cb. PCI EXPRESS 3.0 unlocked via software on x79 so bit faster on that side same with cb. There you go

Then I will request you to try out i7-5775c if you can, with any Z97 board but it has to be by Asus, as that niche cpu kinda only works right with Asus boards. Apparently if set up right it can perform on par with 8700K, at least when it comes to game framerates, it will lose out on multithreaded stuff like cinebench.

NOTE: you do not need a modded BIOS to use NVMe devices such as the Samsung 950 Pro or various Intel models that have their own boot ROM. However, modded BIOS files are available for many X79 mbds, especially ASUS. Sadly, the Samung 960 and later series do not have their own boot ROM. Interesting point about your overclocked setup, it does of course increase power consumption, etc., but if you use the XEON 2680 v2 (IB-E 10-core, uses 3.1GHz all-core) it gives 1389 CB R15 just at stock. It's not a CPU for overclocking, but it's a good compromise if one doesn't want to overclock, and of course there are no issues with cooling or noise. I bought some 2680 v2s for 150 UKP each, good price really. I've done a lot of oc'ing with X79, here's some useful data (for Firefox, set Page Style to No Style from the View menu): www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/tests-jj.txt The toms test suite shown is exactly the same suite used by tomshardware some years back during the X79 era, so results are comparable to any reviews from that time (until the suite was updated). toms gave me their test suite as I had been hoping to write an article for them about older CPU/GPU combos. The Rampage IV Extreme is a good board, but if you need extra pro features, such as better support for PCIe option cards, then also consider the P9X79 WS and P9X79-E WS. I have a number of each, several R4Es, E/WSs, etc. I normally run memory on X79 boards at 2133 or 2400, GSkill TridentX is a good choice. Some apps respond well to the greater bandwidth, such as After Effects. I've dealt with about eight 3930Ks so far, they've all managed 4.7 ok, but beyond that it varies. About half were ok at 4.8, but only with a somewhat larger voltage bump. I'm sure 5.0 is doable with most of them with the right settings, but that's into vcore/heat territory I wouldn't employ for a 24/7 or pro type system (by contrast, 5.0 is perfectly possible with any i7 2700K 4-core with good vcore and temps). I've also built three 4930K setups (my main gaming PC is such) and have a backup 4960X editing rig (P9X79-E WS mbd), the latter is a CPU that is definitely not worth the extra cost. Lastly, if you don't need extreme threaded CPU performance but would like good IPC and lots of PCIe, then the 4820K 4-core is a good CPU; it is cheap, oc's like crazy and still has 40 PCIe lanes (unlike HW-E and later models). Bizarre to think that a 4820K can support multi-GPU setups that are not possible with even the 7820X. :D Here's one of my CUDA research rigs with quad 900MHz GTX 580 3GB (though this one has a 3930K on a WS board; my 4820K test system uses an R4E): www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/3930K_quad580_13.jpg X79 is fun. 8) It's a shame the series never had a proper refresh with native USB3, etc., but at least the modders have added NVMe boot support to a number of boards, including the R4E and the others mentioned above. Alas so far I've not managed to obtain any XEONs from the 1600 v2 series because they've been too expensive, so I don't know the answer to your question. @Sam S I think the first thing I would try is replacing the RAM. Many years ago I was using Redline RAM on P55 mbds but as soon as I tried going anywhere near the supposed XMP levels it just didn't work. I had the same problem when I bought my first P67 mbd with a 2700K, so I bought a GSkill Ripjaws kit instead and never looked back (later Corsair kits also seem to work well). Unless you do have some kind of mbd issue, or a degraded memory controller in the CPU, I expect you'd have much better luck by using a TridentX 2400MHz kit, running it at 2133, though I should say I'm not sure how high up the scale the basic P9X79 board is in terms of VRM capability, etc. I kinda jumped over the entry models and went straight to the WS and R4E, though I did build a Deluxe for my brother (but that has a 2680 v2 so it just runs at 1866). I agree though that 130F does sound oddly high for the mbd temp when idle. Btw, I do plan at some point on adding up to date 3D bench info to my site using a 3930K @ 4.7, but for the moment the baseline testing has tended to be a 5GHz 2700K, with a mix of other stuff included (not had the time to fully flesh it all out yet): www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgi.html#PC

@Sam S Well, all I can say is I bought a lot of Mushkin Ridgeback, Redline and Blackline kits early on, and it did work ok on a P55 board to get an i3 550 to 4.7GHz, but that couldn't handle a high RAM clock anyway: valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2093028 As soon as I wanted to get some decent speeds though, I just couldn't get the Mushkin RAM to remain stable at XMP (except for the Ridgeback, I had that at 2GHz on a different P55 board, but it did not play well with P67). I had far fewer issues with GSkill and later Corsair. Heck, even a Patriot Viper 2400 kit worked ok on an R4E with a 3930K. I bought a Sniper kit first btw, then a Ripjaws, later TridentX. Here's the Ridgeback on the P55 at 2GHz: valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1507189 Here's when I did have the Redline kit at 2133 on the P67 with a 5GHz 2700K: valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2334534 but as I say it wasn't stable, so I switched to GSkill TridentX and that worked much better (I ended up building *seven* systems with this spec, one of them with 32GB): valid.x86.fr/euhlxt The other problem I ran into even more though was availability & pricing, eventually Mushkin just became way too expensive, if it was even in stock. Btw, I was one of the very first to get a full 64GB running on an ASUS X79 mbd with an oc'd i7 and XMP. ASUS helped me do it, because tech reviewers never normally used so much RAM (I needed it for a pro build I was doing for someone). It need all sorts of tweaks to handle the power delivery and suchlike. See: valid.x86.fr/7qy6s0 Here's one of the more interesting setups I did, a P55 mbd with the max 16GB @ 2133 using GSkill, a setup I used to obtain most of the 3DMark records for the P55 platform, eg.: www.3dmark.com/fs/22431997 Re the fan stuff, yeah that's a problem, in the end I gave up on Corsair's sw, I had too many issues with it. I just stuck to BIOS controls or something like Afterburner, though I think on one system I was able to get AI Suite II behaving ok. If you're trying to do RGB stuff aswell though, I can't help there as I don't use RGB tech at all. IIRC though these various sw suites can clash with each other because the sensors under Windows don't like being accessed by more than one application at the same time.

Note if you do ever desire to move on from X79, my site has a good amount of comparative data: www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/tests-jj.txt It's striking to realise that a 3930K at 4.8GHz is significantly outperformed by a stock speed Ryzen 3600, which of course uses vastly less power. I've been using a 5GHz 2700K as my daily tasks machine for a long time, but a recent check revealed shocking power consumption numbers, so I intend to switch to Ryzen asap, which will give better performance while reducing power consumption by almost 70%, without any need for meddling with complicated system monitoring sw. I recently build a gaming PC for someone (Ryzen 3600 and GTX 1060 6GB on an Asrock B450M Pro4), I was amazed at how easy it was, especially the automatic system wide fan control, it actually worked, resulting in a near silent system. My gaming PC which drives the 48" TV and using to type this (via HTPC) is also a 2700K (at 4.5GHz), on an Asrock Z68 Extreme7; I plan on switching to Zen3, probably a Ryzen 4600. My other gaming PC which atm drives a normal 24" 1920x1200 IPS is a 4.5GHz 4930K on an ASUS R4E; I use this less often so I'll leave it for a while, but probably replace it next year with something a lot more efficient, perhaps another Ryzen 4600. X79 was a lot of fun to mess with, I built a great many systems for myself and others, but for actual use I find now I care much more than I used to about power consumption, heat and noise.

Yep, 4 player Survival after 30min in and infested are everywhere. Gets chaotic quick and will stress a system pretty good. Lots of particle and physics effects. I've played it since alfa 9 years ago and has really developed into a beautiful game. I play it on a hp Z420 xeon 2667v2, 32gb ram, RX 5600XT, 4k 43" TCL.

CPU vcore and vcssa MUST be set to offset mode NOT manual for Intel speed step to function correctly. Without offset mode, voltage will remain at max even when the cpu down clocks in idle states. With offset mode additional voltage will be applied in a smooth ramp as the cpu clocks up. You may also encounter an issue when using manual mode on these two settings on this board where the CPU will not down clock at all and Intel speed step will be completely inactive.

Cool explanation, I currently have a 4930k @ 4.7Ghz 1.42V. Diminishing returns started around 4.5Ghz, this only needed 1.28V to be stable. But because I have a full custom loop setup and 560x120mm of radiator space I thought it would be a waste of cooling equipment to not run it. Been on 4.6/4.7Ghz for 5 years+ I am in the market for a 1680v2 though, so cheap for the performance and overclocking headroom! Your videos regarding overclocking Xeons hand me sold!

Hey! I just picked up a 3960x sealed for $99 and I picked up the latest Huanan motherboard that has 8 dimm slots (the X79 B10) for $100. I'm honestly so excited. Some games were being maxed to 100% CPU utilization with 4c/4t, I was using a 2500k at 4.5ghz. I figured 6c/12t at 4.4-5ghz would make a difference.

Good to so those dreaming sellers who thought their 1680 v2's were worth $600+ finally got the memo that Ryzen exists. Wanted one of those back when they were $1200+ but made due with a 1620 v2 @ 4.1ghz. With quadchannel 2400 CL11-12-12-13-300 1t DDR3 got ~60gb/s read/write in Aida64, My Ryzen gets 55gb/s @ DDR3466 CL-14-14-14-2201t, besides a few games that really really hate Intel architecture with double the performance [like SkyrimSE, same drivers/gpu/files] gaming is the same or slightly better and productivity is just plain better.

You forgot to mention EVGA! I'm trying to get an E5-1680-V2 right now for my X79 DARK! And yeah, that 25MB L3 cache (Pronounced "CASH") is awesome! I'm close to the limit now with my 4820K@4.98GHz@1.355v@56c max. Still going to try to break the 5GHz barrier though! Even if I have to cook it off the board to do it! I'm running Dominator GT 2133 (32GB - 8X4GB QC) CL9-11-10-27-171-2t, and it maxes out in AIDA64 just as the math says it should. X79 is an awesome platform! And yeah, mine runs 24/7 at those settings!

I've had a Rampage IV board since 2012 and I originally bought the 3930k.... and the 3930k struggled to hit 4.6ghz. A few years ago, I found a Xeon E5-1660 that easily overclocked to 4.8ghz at around 1.35v and it was passing every stress test I threw at it. If the Xeons are cheaper then I wouldn't bother with the lower binned 3930k. Nothing beats the E5-1680 v2 though... I was running with the 1680 for the last 3 years until I retired my x79 system a month ago.... then repurposed it for folding.

i have the rampage 4 extreme mobo with the 3930k!..what was the difference you experienced when u put the 1680 v2 in?..did u see differences in games!..i did notice the 3930k has 12mb cache conpared to the 1680v2 has 25mb cache!..some say the bigger cache size does get better performance!

@@john2ndname I made the jump back in 2019 and I had a 1080ti with the system, so I didn't notice much of a difference because the system was gaming at 4k. The difference was with File Compression and benchmark scores. The thing about the 1680v2 is it has a much better memory controller, so I had no trouble running DDR3-2400 memory with it while I had it overclocked. In some GPU benchmarks like the FFXV benchmark at 1080p medium, the scores with the Xeon overclocked are 50% higher..... but I have the CPU at 4.6ghz and the RAM at 2400MT/s (XMP enabled). Also, I was testing with an RTX 3070 and 3080ti. The Xeon can hold it's own with the 3070 just as long as you're looking for a stable 60fps. If you have a 360mm AIO cooler, 2133MT/s or higher RAM, and you're prepared to overclock the 1680v2 then it's worth it. There are now a few games that can make use of the 2 extra cores as well.

@@john2ndname Since the 1680 v2 is made on the 22nm process, it does run cooler than the 3930k or a Sandy Bridge-EP Xeon. So if you can hit 4.5ghz with the 3930k and the temps are reasonable, the 1680v2 should produce the same results. I was able to take the E5-1660 (6-core Sandy Bridge-EP) to 5.0ghz at 1.51v but while running a stress test the CPU was chewing up 250w. Even at 4.7ghz at 1.41v the 8-Core 1680v2 doesn't consume nearly that much wattage.

I just used this guide to revisit my e5-1650 0 which is sandy bridge. I gotta say man it way lowered the temps (probably a drop of 20c using same vcore and turbo voltages) I think i must have had something (not turbo or vcore) on auto that was causing the extra heat. I ended up getting a nice stable 4.6 overclock with fixed voltage (as opposed to similar thermals at 4.3 originally). Using offset was a bit trickier and would run 5c hotter using the aida stress test, i ended up doing something really different though. I pushed it all the way up to 4.7 GHz with appropriate offset vcore and used a current limit setting in the bios to prevent overheating and downclock when it approached thermal limits (because i have a 212 turbo cooler). Essentially it would downclock the CPU to about 4.1 GHz and stay below 80c when using the full aida64 stress test (CPU FPU cache and sys mem) and but when running cpu only aida test it would run at all cores 4.7GHz with no thermal issues (doesn't seem to stress it as much). Good for gaming though as it'll run below 65c at 4.7 as needed. I discovered this affect by accident when i hit the 200 core current limit and it started downclocking.

I was so close to modding a x79 mobo into my HP Z420 workstation. Had a Xeon 2667 v2 8 core in it which has been fine for what I do. Just for fun recently swapped a 1680 v2 I got for $75 into it. Using Intel XTU and Throttle Stop I've gotten up to 4.2ghz all core 1.32v on the stock mobo. After watching this don't think it's worth the time, effort and money to mod in a x79 mobo just for 4.5ghz. Plus my 32gb ECC ram won't work on x79. @@D.r0j exactly, that's called V-droop. The only interesting number is that of what is actually being delivered to the CPU under load. Aslong (basically) as you're below 50°C there's no issue. If you're reaching above 50°C you should REALLY make sure you're not exceeding 1.4v to the core (Intel rated). Get cpuid or hwid or, Asus Ai suite 2. To check the voltage in Windows. If you have a RIVE there should be an included "OC Key" with a dvi-d connection in the box that you can connect to your motherboard which gives you a overlay on your monitor.

@@rndmfella1874 It most definitely isn't 1.5. 180% current doesn't affect vcore much, and ultra high llc keeps voltage 100% constant. It's the extreme llc setting that actually shoots above your vcore setting, rather than keeping it constant/downvolting less under load. Keep in mind I'm talking about what your vcore setting TRANSLATES INTO, which is always higher on my Asus Rampage 4 Formula (e.g. if I set 1.45, it's more like 1.475-1.48 in reality). Compared to that voltage, all ultra high does is keeping it almost constant with a total range of 0.02v. There's an unrelated setting, can't remember the name, something like allow additional vcore for Turbo freq. That actually pushes your vcore higher, not llc=ultra high.

You really should make an updated overclocking guide on this cpu it is an absolutely pain in the ass to overclock and the temperatures are really high 4.5 it gets really weird. Last year here in nyc had a crazy heatwave had too just use stock settings it kept shutting down. I'm using a 280mm AIO. Minimal has to be 360mm AIO. I have Asus X79 Sabertooth.

I followed this video to a tee, I had to half speed the video sitting in front of my computer to follow along. I have an old Digital Storm computer with an Rampage Extreme IV motherboard, i7 3970x CPU, 2 Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Graphics cards. In the past I had tried to set the bias to some of its default overclock settings and it crapped out. So the last year I've just been running it at 3.5 speed. Following this video I was able to carefully bump it up as explained here to 4.4, then 4.6, then 4.8. I wasn't able to get the memory above the rated 1866 megahertz it crashed if I tried to go higher. The highest temperature I saw was close to 80° running the Aida64 tests. I have replaced the water in both the cooling loops, one loop is for CPU the other loop is for gpus. At idle my temperatures are 45° CPU and around 28° on my gpus. Thanks for doing this video, it's the only video I saw that I could follow step by step, and it matched my bios. 👍

Got 3960X + R4E + Nepton 240M as 2nd hand parts. I guess running in 4.5 should be fine even in a CM E500L budget case. With 280X crossfire it is going to hit 900W as power consumption, with 180W CPU alone. Luckily my 1600P2 (bought from a stripped premium mining rig) should be able to deal with almost everything

Running a I7 3820 on an Asus P9X79 board, bought the P9X79 for 120 euro and got the I7 3820 for free with the board. Stable 4.5Ghz with 1.38v. Temps around 55C so not that bad. Thinking to upgrade to Xeon.

Have you seen the OCN thread where people are running the 3820 at 5.0? The 3820 was an underrated CPU for sure, ditto the 4820K. Btw, if you do ever fancy 2 extra cores, 3930Ks cost diddly squat these days (less than $100).

what a coincidence, a X79 video. Can you do a video of NVME speeds on a PCI-e Adapter on the X79 motherboard vs a standard SSD speeds? X79 supports PCI-e 3.0, so you get the full speed (40 lanes PCI-e). It will be the same as any other platform. X58 will get around half on Linear Read/Write (since that is only PCIe 2.0).

I recently bought a Rampage IV Formula with a 3930k, running 4x8GB Kingston HyperX 1866, timings tightened to 9-10-9-27 (CR1). My 3930k is a dud, it needs sooo much voltage for 4.8 GHz with HT enabled. I cannot get it stable under 1.45v with LLC ultra high, additional vCore with turbo freq enabled (this translates to 1.475-1.480v in real life under load). As the system is watercooled with a 420mm 80mm thick radiator and a 200mm one 85mm thick, I have plenty of thermal headroom. I just keep it at 4.8 with those voltages, don't care if the chip dies, saving up for a 1680v2 in the meantime. I really hope it is going to be able to at least clock the same, as Overwatch is really CPU intensive at high framerates. I don't even care about how much vCore I need to push. @4.8 Ghz with the 3930k, I never drop below 220 FPS in-game but am mostly at about 240-270. In FFA, I'm maxed out at 300 all the time. I am constantly CPU limited though ( one . next to fps, instead of ...).

bro going beyond 200 fps in fps games basically won't make you play better). playing 200 fps cs go capped on 4820k @4.7, rang supreme. It is much more important to get a decent 1 ms fast matrix monitor 144 ghz or 240 even better.

Great video as usual bud. Bryan, "diminishing returns" on sandy-bridge variant seem to come in on the X79 Sandy XEON 1650 V0 at around 4.4ghz standard as well as I have two of them now and from what I read 'I believed to have a GOLD cpu 'silicone lotto winner originally so purchased another random to see what happened and now from my "reads" and differences on the same chip, I am sure one of them is a Beast-Mode chip. As in one is a gold chip without a doubt that can hit 5.2 (I hit 5.3 once but forgot how too!) ghz on four core turbo mode at 4.79 (Yes, I change the BLCK on this profile to end in 79, seems like this chip does not like an even blck number anyway, 101 & up every other? Only thing I HATE about this is windows does not recognize the OC properly when BLCK is changed - BUT maybe, still worth it?) ghz @ 1.420 or so... even for MY voltage running at 4.91ghz (I can prob also get it stable and cool enough with a 5.09ghz or so 'however I KNOW it will go to a steady straight & overclock on all 6 cylinders x 12T's at around 1.380 voltage and not much other fine tuning... but I bet I could get a lower voltage by a tad if I really played around which I will soon.... On my more "typical" sandy bridge, it seems to be diminishing around 4.4ghz and can achieve that without touching anything BUT the speed in the bios, not recommended but works indeed stably... It can hit the 4.71 but not at a comfortable voltage being at around 1.43 for me if I remember correctly... So, the sandy-bridge seems to be overall maybe a TAD more better at OC at the most unless you have a GOLD ChiP which I suppose then it is a tad more then a "tad" but not completely insane especially considering missing two whole cores from your 8... It is sure FUN though.... LOL. I may not be exact on my voltages but I think i am... if anything off by a hair as allot of profiles to-remember but my speeds are dead on as that's what we go for so we usually remember, right! I settled in on 4.71 for a few weeks (I just am cool with lower voltage and tad lower OC at this moment in my life as not using her heavy for the moment but that could change) then took it to 4.79 "just because of the "79" overall for my particular preference of overclocking with heat versus voltage versus performance and versus degradation. Needless to say I am extremely pleased with this 4.79ghz on all 6 with the pretty darn low voltage considering... ...as well as temps at 46 to 63ish.... to about 66ish on the hottest CORE at maximum synthetic LOAD (I actually need to check Temps again under stress since now in a case, going back to aida after years since seen you utilize it) and I am not even using my 'Best PSU" which this video just reminded me of... ....as in the PSU "Quality" matters somewhat for performance in overclocking and overclocking in General so thanks yet again... With my experiences I would not swap my x79 system and xeon 1650 V0 for a 8700k now... This "feels better"... and is a little more zesty when somebody ask what I am using... LOL.... But a major question regarding ram compatibility is keeping me from it: Registered ECC ram compatibility with X79 motherboards with Xeon 16** or 26** CPU's. Does Registered ECC work in combination with a Xeon, on all brands of X79 boards from like Asrock/MSI/Asus/GB?? OR is it only Huanan specific? With Huanan X79 boards being the only special kid (X79 motherboard) on the block that supporting Reg ECC in this combination? There is a lot of contradicting info regarding Reg ECC support + X79 boards running Xeon's. So is there a solid answer that can be given on the Reg ECC subject on X79 boards? Got that 1680v2, but I wanted to get it even before your video. It is awesome. Made it work rock stable @4.5 on 1.4v cpu, vtt 1.16, vcssa 1.15, pll 1.82. Passes OCCT 7.3.0 CPU heavy extreme test. 4.6 is unreal for my sample), too high voltage needed, it is unsafe, but 4.5 is just ok, great CPU!), but lack avx2(.

Why not test temps and stability in AVX capable program (like LinX or IntelBurnTest) ? Also, doesn't adding "cache" and "memory" for testing in AIDA64, reduces the chances of finding CPU instability (I mean, "FPU" and "CPU" can't get utilised properly when cache/memory subsystems are being "nuked" at the same time) ?

I have a 3820 which is overclockable but only by the BLK and I can get it to 4.2ghz on a water cooler on an Asus P9X79. I'm not sure how i can overclock it any higher. I also have all 8 of my memory slots full, 4x8 (32gb) which I know the more sticks of RAM you have can handicap your overclocking. Though i'd really like to get my hands on a 6 core CPU, either a Ivy Bridge, or a Xeon with even more cores if do-able, and not break the bank. How much are Xeons 1680s? $400 usd? FRAG aLOT, you can use CPU straps to reach higher speeds with the 3820. Check the OCN thread where people run them at 5+. Note that 3930Ks cost very little now (if you fancy 2 extra cores on the cheap; look for the SR0KY edition), and you're right about the RAM, using all the slots imposes a greater load, which may restrict the ability of some CPUs to run a stable oc at higher speeds (IMC becomes a limiting factor).

My findings from 4690k, drop cache multiplier to x35 until core multiplier is stable. After x44 core you will need to tinker with cpupll voltage, decrease/increase it trail and error and differs per cpu. Usualu 1.75-2.05 i settled on 1.95 which can supply up to x47 multiplier. My vcore was x45 @1.24, x46@1.28 and x47@1.33. Settled with x45 and then slowly worked towards cache x40 and ram 2133 cl9
