The leadsinger is Dianne van Giersbergen. One of the few singers in the genre who actually is a real trained opera singer. She finished her classical training in 2012 got her masters and is now back with her own band Ex libris. Last year they finished Ann, a trilogy about three historical persons all called Ann...And since 2017 she became a member of the 'Ayreon family'. On the new Ayreon album Transitus she's playing the part 'the Soprano' This will suit her very well with her very powerfull voice.

Some background info: This is a German band, the singer is Dutch. Her name is Dianne van Giersbergen (not related to Anneke!). Sadly she was sort of ditched from the band cause there were some medical problems and the band didn't wanna listen to her. I hope she has found another band cause I saw a video of her in tears about this fact... She deserves a good band in wich members respect her and each other cause, like Floor, she is made for this..... This girl can really sing as you heard. Glad you would listen to her because she deserves to be heard. She is awesome!

Before Dianne joined Xandria she had her own band Ex Libris but she never quit Ex - Libris and is now back with this old band. Last year they released a trilogy about 3 historical figures all called Ann..check it out you won't be disappointed if you like her voice.

Yep. This was my introduction to Dianne a few years ago when I saw it on KZbin. Learning that she had to quit the band gutted me. “Theatre of Dimensions” is a tour de force.

There is a Canadian singer named Leah. You have to listen to their work, especially the album called Kings & Queens. Her music is powerful, but her voice is Newage, which is why some call her "The Enya of metal".

What is really awesome about Dianne is the fact that she became a classical crossover artist intentionally as her dissertation was about fusion of metal with classical influences or that is, at least, how I remember it. :-) She made most recently with Ex-Libris songs about three historical Annes, specifically: Anne Bolyen, Anna Romanova and Anne Frank - three songs about the fate of each of them. So, you heard Dianne and Tarja. There is still, at least, Laura Macri from those classically trained singers who are vocalists in metal bands. Dianne is no longer in this band. They fired her because she has Bi Polar. She is back with the band with the band she started Ex Libris. When she came forward about why Xandria fired her, the previous 4 singers backed her up with their stories. Xandria had potential but treated their singers awfully.

The only symphonic metal band I know from the USA is Aesma Daeva, but their stuff is something different from the bands you mention. But they had Lori Lewis, the best metal soprano, later in Therion and now with a solo album just released. As far as I know, she is the most important american person in the symphonic metal world... If you want to hear Lori singing with Aesma Daeva, I suggest the song "D'oreste D'ajaccie", and with Therion go to the "Gothic Live 2007" concert. There you will find why I consider her the best metal soprano...

Yeah, there are a few. But they are probably better known here in Europe than in the USA. The band "Seven Spires" comes to my mind with the incredibly versatile singer Adrienne Cowan or the Band Kamelot.

They have another song CALLED OF DESTINY and it's great. THIS song is about living in a post climate change world. Try the song PATH TO DECAY by the band SIRENIA. Another band no one knows much about is TRISTANIA they have heaps of good songs and are more Gothic metal than symphonic metal. A great band that is no longer together is THEATRE OF TRAGEDY.

Please check out Dianne's current band Ex Libris. In my opinion they have far better musical composition which allows her voice to shine. The song "the exile" would be my recommendation, but the whole Ann trilogy is amazing.
