Xaver Varnus plays Bach's Fantasy and Fugue in G minor BWV 542, based on the 1907 edition by Karl Straube, on his private concert hall's Casavant organ in Nova Scotia.
Xaver Varnus' first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Debussy. He has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album "From Ravel to Vangelis" (SONY, 2007), is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin, and in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia Peninsula, where he opened Varnus Hall in a 19th century church. "Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould" (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper). "He is one of the most influential figure in organ music in the early twenty-first century." (Mark Wigmore, The New Classical FM, Canada).

This Straube edition, Xaver's playing, this fine organ and chapel, all-around perfect! Love it, thank you!

The deliberate choice to reduce speed of the fugue and to opt for a soft registration renders the fugue so transparent and seemingly effortless. A real pleasure!

Thank you for making this available for our enjoyment, but as I was watching I couldn't help but think what a shame it is that there is no live audience there to enjoy it, too. 🤔

Given it is his own concert hall, he can play it all day and night if he wants 😉 Sometimes with audience, sometimes without. Since one year i have my own 4-manual Hauptwerk organ in my living room, since then i find myself just giving it a go every now and then whenever i like. I guess Xaver does the same on this organ as he lives in this building afaik 🙂. One has to keep repeating playing it to keep the skills top notch. So sometimes you can just turn on the video camera then.

I'm sorry but this is far away from slow motion. Varnus makes the pieces so clear that you are able to hear every single not. What sadly other organists don't understand when they are playing Bach. And Bach only played on the Cembalo very fast, BUT not on the Organ. It has someting to do with the way the Organ speaks.

Thank you so much for playing from the Straube edition! My first recording of this piece was the Karl Richter disc (Jaegersborg Church), a performance which influences my playing to this day. Richter was a student of Straube and much of this edition can be heard in Richter's interpretation (like the pedal octaves). No matter how much scholarship "progresses" over the years I think it's important to understand, acknowledge, and appreciate the aesthetic mindsets of the great masters that precede us (like Richter, Straube, Ramin, etc.).

This is probably my favourite Bach P and F. Initially I though the tempo was so so slow compared to many others, BUT one can her all the notes and different registrations much more clearly. Bravo maestro, along with your superb version of the BWV 565 from Germany,

Thank you for uploading another brilliant video of the organ works by Bach! I always liked your approach in interpretation, which is often generally miscalled „to romantic“ in modern times. Despite that this is an explicit romantic arrangement, it is so nice to hear, that not all contemporary organist are tending to play these works like a car-race. And it‘s a great honor to the work of Karl Straube! Greetings!

Aficionados of techno music always look for and tend to talk about the building tension and the satisfying resolution of "the drop." But the Fantasy portion of this performance makes such a good example of how composers have been utilizing dissonance and complex harmony that shifts to simplified harmony to build and resolve that same tension for centuries. On the whole, though, much preferred the Fugue portion. It seemed to better demonstrate Xaver Varnus' amazing multi-track mental skills.

Each manual is one separate organ, which each of them their own sound character. Bottom one is called the Great which is just loud, second one Swell which has some softer sounds and is in a box which can open and close with the swell pedal, top one is positiv which is even quieter.

Wonderful rich sound for a pipe organ in a fairly small building. Just enough reverberation.
