This amp shines with lower tuned stuff though, which I think was more what they were after with this and the Armageddon. It works incredibly well in a live mix too, especially when your other guitarist uses the usual suspect high gainers.

I've had this amp for a couple years bought it from a music store that was going out of business the owner was desperate and picked it up $300 with foot pedal (right place right time) replaced the tubes to EL34's playing thru 2 Marshalls 4 X 12 slant cabs loaded with greenbacks and in my opinion this amp is a pure tone machine for the music I play and by the way it has really nice cleans - for me changing tubes and speakers made all the difference in the world - I just love it!

Interesting how it's different strokes for different folks. I liked a lot of the tones you didn't like, but the tone at 11:27 that you liked is one I didn't really enjoy. I also enjoyed the Egnater Renegade and Rebel 30, so maybe his ear and my ear just get along. Nice demo! So good to hear something that sounds organic. It's a breath of fresh air from those reactive load + IR demo people from whom every amp sounds the same.

I think this amp is also VERY particular about speakers/cabs, moreso than most amps I’ve ever owned. I love the way it sounds through my Orange 412. I also play a heavily detuned 7 string baritone so some of the pokiness in the mids is more desirable for my setup. Still, thanks for doing a video of this amp!

I totally agree! I have an Armageddon and it doesn't get well with the Celestion G12T-75 and Eminence Legend V12 I have in my cab. I think Vintage 30's and similar speakers are a better fit for them. I've also considered a G12K-100 or a Mojotone Greyhound. Choices, choices...

I’m a newcomer to high gain tube amplification. After looking at some budget friendly options out there I came across this one. I actually checked out this review before I picked it up along with a few others. Turned out to be an amazing barn find! Got it for $150 because the seller thought the tubes might be going bad. Turns out, just needed to operate with enough power to warm them up properly! That and a little DeoxIT. I’ve got it paired with an inexpensive Orange 412 with Voice of the World speakers and she goes pretty well on clean and lead channels, and I’m a fan of the onboard reverb. Might not be the go-to for the everyday thrasher, but I’d def consider it for a broader mix. Enjoyed the review though. Gave me some good perspectives to consider!

Any info you have would be appreciated, thanks.

I have this amp. It’s exactly the sound I like. I’m an alternate picker and it has that nice “thud” when you hit the note . You hear exactly what your fingers are doing. I would describe it as “punchy”. Very fun playing lead on. I don’t like shrill/fuzzy amps at all, this is def not how my amp sounds must be your fingers. 😂 This amp does 80s well, and all eras of rock. Classic Rock and Metal machine. But if you want to play death metal, maybe not, but you can def play trash metal with it. I tried and have played a bunch of amps over the years but what I really like about this is that it’s extremely versatile. It’s my go to tube amp at home. The clean channel is good as well. Can def be used for nice sounding cleans. Of course it doesn’t really get up to my Fender Twin Blackface. But not many other amps do cleans that well. With this you can tweak bias and stuff as well. Check out other demos on it. This review is very much about taste and music is about taste. There are tonnes of amps I do not like either. Not saying you should get one but I def like mine.

I had this amp, and feel the amp sits in a live mix very well. A nice lead tone can be dialed organic or with a bit of tube screamer. Additionally you can get a different gain and freq shift, swapping out the 4 X 6L6s with EL34. There is a Bias adjustment on the back . Just need a 12$ volt meter to change tube bias for EL34. These amps really are cab dependent as others have pointed out I used a Marshall 1960A and the tones are a bit different then what I’m hearing here. On you vid, I felt I heard the best hot tones came out with the last guitar swap in this great video. Maybe the pickup in the ESP is not the best match, not sure. Excellent video, enjoy your funny interjections as well. Great job!!
@RisingMoon6972 жыл бұрын
Open the back and there is The ODS/ODV switch selects one of two input circuits for the high gain channels only. ODV is the tube input path. ODS selects a really cool,high voltage input circuit that does a remarkable job of simulating the actual tube. The reason we have it in there is because of the unpredictable quality of tubes in general. That part of the circuit is most sensitive to a noisy or microphonic tube. By switching to the ODS setting, the first tube stage is replaced thus eliminating the headaches caused by bad tubes. Just thought I'd let people know about it. I've owned three of these amps due to issues under warranty. My third one is now collecting dust because one day the high gain channel just up and quit. I just pulled it out and dusted it off to be used for a pass through for my Headrush. Lastly, the pots on these amps suck ass. Constantly need to be cleaned and even then cut out or become scratchy shortly after. Trying to find an enjoyable sound out of this amp is next to impossible. Such a waste considering all the tech they put into it.

Hey man, great review as always! I have this amp and I do agree it is a dark sounding amp with a weird midrange. I like it as it has a kick ass clean chanel (I know, not the target of this chanel lol) and it is different enough from my 5150II so that I can switch whenever my ears get too tired of the piercing aggressiveness of the Peavey (if that's ever possible). I had the Randall Diavlo RD100 and vastly preferred the Egnater over it. But the fact you're honest about what you don't like is great as it might be something other people won't enjoy in this amp. It's definitely not ideal for really low tunings or 7 strings but sounds brutal with bright guitars and mid heavy pickups. If you haven't sold it yet, one thing you can try is to flip the switch just in front of the PT. You can see the manual for that. The default position gives you a solid state first gain stage vs the V1 tube supposedly to help with low volume playing. I'm not sure which position you have it but you can have a go at it. I found that when switching to the tube in V1 vs the solid state circuit, some of the harsness you mention goes away and it sounds a bit smoother. It still is dark sounding and might be even mushier for your ears but you should notice a difference at least! One thing to mention, mine has Mercury Magnetics OT and PT transformers. The previous owner said it was moded but I read they also changed to those for reliability issues. In any case I can't really say what effect they would have vs a stock one so have a look also what kind of transformers yours has. Cheers and keep up the awesome reviews!

Try biasing it first. Mine was biased very cold from the factory. Also flip the switch behind the transformer so that it is pointing out. Inward is solid state preamp, outward is tube. The original hot mod v2 H+ also works in V4 of this amp. Make sure to read the manual to find v4.

I'm playing that exact amp as we speak lol. You sold it to the guitarist in my band. While its definitely not my favorite sounding amp I do think it sounds killer for the stuff we play. More doomy and not quite as technical. It took me a bit to dial it in because as you said the presence really doesnt add sizzle. Keep in mind I'm not a fan of the fizziness of the 5150\EVH\Invective stuff. In fact i had all of your same reactions with a 6505 and invective. They just had exactly what i dont like lol. The vengeance just reminds me of my randall diavlo 100 but with a different eq shape and personally I like this better than the rd100. I tried to like the rd100 because I have an rd40 combo that i love but it wasnt the same at all. I get the feeling that Bruce might have used that layout for this amp with a few changes. @tobaccosun2 жыл бұрын
Eq in loop makes difference. Also used an Airis effects nebula advanced OD and that allowed to knock out some crap frequencies and bring in frequencies needed after preamp section. Also changing a few values in the preamp will bring more clarity and make gain more useable. Jens Kruse also has some mods that help the vengeance, but the price point isn’t worth it for an inexpensive amp that can be Beat by spending a little bit more in another amp. Worth it for $500, yes. $800 or more, no.

I heard if you put the amp in the trash, it sounds better, have you tried that?

Great video, btw, and I really appreciate the way you talk about what youre doing when you move the knobs and what your expecting the amp/gear to do.

Hey man! I've got an Egnator vengeance that i bought 2 years ago. It's been sitting unplayed for the last year, cuz it blew up. Well, just stopped working anyhow. I paid $300 for it. Should I bother to get it fixed, or not waste my money on it??
@belligerentamateur3 жыл бұрын
Man, that's really up to you. They're worth $500-600 on the used market. These amps are known from Transformer issues, so if that's the case, I;'d say not really worth it,
@BackintheFall2 жыл бұрын
Mine blew too. I took it in and got it fixed. There was a capacitor or something that needed to be placed different bc it was touching something in it. Can't remember the full details. That was like a year ago. But once I got it fixed its great!

@@BackintheFall nice to know. Thanks man, I appreciate it!
@BackintheFall2 жыл бұрын
@@mikeflanders1292 no problem. The guy said what was wrong with it is a common issue with the wiring inside. Makes it sound weak and really just does it no good. I blew 8 tubes before I took it in. He said bc that piece was touching another it would keep doing it. He said it was on like the side of the board. Off place. But good luck! Hope you get it fixed and fall in love like I did.

Not every amp is for every one. I own this amp and I get nothing but high praises with the tone i have with it. I dig your honesty but i feel like you have a bad taste in you mouth. i will say this amp does amazing with low tunings, 7 and 8 string guitars. cheers my dude !!

There are moments in the video where the tone sounded killer. I have unusual taste though. LoL. I’d like to check this amp out honestly !!

It sounds better on playback, not as spikey.

Yea sounds decent in the recording. Idk if the vengeance and armageddon have the same circuitry and overall sound but I still think the egnater armageddon was the best sounding amp I’ve owned so far.

LOL that Precence is what I've always turned down, as that headroom is for clean settings :) I'm a Peavey-man with some Marshalls as well. That Egnater is just smooth as Kitty Hawk, old Boogie amps, some Engl, Hughes&Kettner not muddy at all! What's wrong with your ears? Try some greenbacks, can't go wrong with those !

I haven’t see you liking any amp man …. Sorry but not sorry, is very bad to see people trashing all brands like that, creating clouds to people who really needs guidance.

I have almost a thousand videos, most of them are amp playthroughs, I'm very few of them are answered I don't like, so I have no idea what you're talking about. sorry if I don't like an amp that you like, we all have different taste. don't take it personally
@javierleon85768 ай бұрын
I have seen several videos of you testing amps and you saying “ I don’t like this amp “ I’m sorry that is kind of narrow view from my perspective, I do have 30 years playing guitar man.. professionally. I have test my self all those amps. And I think that is pretty bad to talk like that if brands that not might fit on what are you looking. But trashing them just because “you don’t like them” sorry man. That is Not being objective, I get it… is not what are you looking for… and i think or I find that you can be misleading inexperience players to a place that is not good at all … you have try a bunch of amps including mesa Boogie dual rectifier and say “ I don’t like it “ man cone on.. be responsible with the power that you have. That’s all my point. And I hope that you take this in a constructive way..
