Customizing XMBC - Aeon Nox

This video shows how you can customize XBMC using a popular skin called Aeon Nox. It covers how you can customize the main menu, add custom menu items, change the background, and finally shows how you can change the way your libraries look by changing viewtypes, and using movie sets.

Great video. I'm a long time XBMC user but I guess we get stuck in our ways. This is a great skin and has renewed my interest with HTPCs all over again. I liked your suggestion with the custom menus - kids/shows or movies. I was actually impressed with the TV guide feature cause u don't need a tv tuner to use it. You can still navigate to the episode - it's just in your library.

Cheers. I went and grabbed the 512MB model, and have installed Raspbmc on it. So far, so good. Though it basically shows a white screen and blanks out altogether when the infamous HBO "static" logo appears! (The WDTV Live handled it just fine.) Picture is a little blurry, so I set the output to 720p (because that's what the UI is rendered in, I believe.)

Great video and very helpful for myself as I was trying to edit the skin as you would with most other skins. I was and still am using Xperience 1080++ but to be honest, that is great if you want it on a 40" odd TV. However anything 50 inch or above, then really you want something a bit more classy. At the moment I would say that this is probably the best skin for a 50 inch or above TV. Sadly XBMC is so slow on skins, they realise more updates and new versions than skins created. Although this is not 100% the best skin, but for my 60 inch TV it beats looking at an Xbox One clone etc etc.

I believe so. I had some problems with the older versions of openelec playing back media from my NAS, but it wasn't really dropping frames. I'll see if I can find a video that is h.264 and 720 and let you know. I also bought one of the new PIs with 512mb of ram. Probably going to do a refresh of the Openelec/Raspbmc videos soon.

Well done video, hope you keep making them. I just started to get into all this XBMC stuff, it's new to me and somewhat makes my head spin. I like this skin as well, but its crashing some of time on my ATV2. Is their better settings to lighten the load?

For this video I used the windows version of XBMC so I could record it easier. However, all the things I showed here are exactly the same on any version of XBMC. I generally run XBMCbuntu on the two HTPCs I use at home.

Thank you for the very helpful video I love Aeon nox and learned a few things. I was wondering if there was any way to create custom collections. For example I'd love to be able to have all my Marvel movies together. Currently I get separate collections and I really consider them one big movie series. I'd like to be able to not only group them but edit the timeline. Is this possible?

I have mine set up EXACTLY this way. One for animation and another for live (however I upset the comic heads in my House bc I’ve combined Marvel and DC LOL, oops) hope you’ve gotten this figured out btw if not and you’re still using it since 2014...you just click c on particular movie>manage>manage movie set>add movie to new set

I don't get the same menus as what your showing. It just shows the the generic version with the aeon nox skin without these advanced settings.

Thanks for these videos. Very helpful! I'm really picky about video quality. Will the Pi and XBMC play back 720p h.264 videos without frame drops? (I use a WDTV Live, and love the quality, but the menus are too slow.)

Unfortunately Aeon is one of the most intensive skins you can run on XBMC. I would say try the built in Confluence skill and see if that runs a little bit better. The only other thing I can suggest is to turn off some of the backgrounds, or use lower resolution artwork, but I hate to recommend that because that seems to defeat the purpose of using Aeon to begin with.

Hi Kris,Unfortunately I am not sure what you are looking at doing. Are you asking if you can use thumbnails instead of the text in the main menu? So like instead of it saying "movies" you would have a picture of a movie there for example? Or are you asking how to add the most recently added items from your library as thumbnails on the main menu?

this is probably a noob question, but i just started using xbmc, and im guessing that in all these youtube videos of people displaying their xbmc content whether it be movies, tv shows etc, im guessing that all of that content is physically on their hdd? or can you add movies/shows etc to your libraries and favorites that arnt downloaded to the hdd, for example a movie or show in an addon such as 1channel or icefilms, in which you would normally stream it. thx for any help!

Arrgh! I have such a simple problem with my kodi setup, its wrecking me why i can't solve it!!! I dragged the kodi exe shortcut to startup on windows 7 when it boots. now, whenever it boots (even if i exit etc) kodi ALWAYS boots to the freaking settings menu instead!! I can't see a setting to stop it doing this. its such a nice skin too i dont want to change it etc, all i want is for when it boots is to show the main menu, not the settings menu :(

I think you have to go into the "Movie Information" section and then download the artwork. Once you do that, if you change your viewtype to include clearart, it should start showing up. I found that unfortunately a lot of the movies to not have clearart yet, but the ones that do have it look pretty awesome :)
