The whole ‘block rights’ thing from Sony sounds absolutely true too but I’m struggling to be too outraged about it. The whole Game Pass situation has come about solely because Microsoft is a lot richer than Sony, so if Sony has to fight dirty by paying publishers not to put their games on Game Pass, then I can’t blame them. It’d presumably be cheaper than getting them on PlayStation Plus and it’s not like the publisher couldn’t just say no.

Basically, Sony wants you to buy a PS5, get PS+ whatever tier, and buy $70 games each time. Microsoft is like, give us $10-$15 a month, play on whatever you have, play games, we will give you the option to buy the games if you want also but not necessary.

Sony is actually very fortunate that MS did the things they did going into the last generation like dismantling first party studios, choosing not to renew their COD marketing rights that they had the whole 360 gen, focusing their system on media, the DRM fiasco, and so many other mistakes they made. The old leadership at MS failed in so many ways and I’m not even talking about just Xbox. They were the market leader heading into this last gen and they gave it all away.

Ps3 was just way to expensive and the bad news surrounding it like the infamous cyber attack also they didn’t almost lose half their users. People need to understand that the ps2 wasn’t just a gaming console it was revolutionary for gaming and as a DVD player aswell, it was as cheap if not cheaper and higher quality than other actual DVD players, for alot of people it was more of well might aswell buy a ps2 it has games on it too why not. The biggest thing was when they made indie devs pay for their games to be findable. Sony had horrible software, and music CDs came with a literal Rootkit virus if they were Sony Music published. Sony has a long history of bullying rivals and doing shitty tactics. So no tears for Sony. It's unfortunate for them that Microsoft under Satya Nadela has become such a giant. Azure paved the way for Microsoft to become who they are.

It seems some Sony fans are on the defensive for this one... look, the hypocrisy of Sony's position is clear, and anyone refusing to see that is doing so wilfully or out of brand loyalty. Sony has perfected a certain formula, leveraging extremlely aggressive first and third party licencing and exclusivity, which capitalised upon and then extended upon a dominant market position. Microsoft found a way to quickly challenge this using the resources it has; namely, lots and lots of cash. And Sony thinks this is unfair. That's what this is all about. That Sony never foresaw Microsoft engaging with the gaming market in this manner, and actually resourcing the gaming division with creating this alternative to the Sony model, is the basic motivation for this argument of theirs, and this is what they want to somehow prevent from happening. That's all. It's that simple. Sony doesn't want competition. It doesn't want innovation. It wants the gaming market to remain exactly the way it was when they were dominant. Its quite simple. Of course the double irony is that Microsoft has ramped up support for Xbox and GamePass just as Sony has become ever more dependent on profits from the gaming division to maintain an attractive bottom line for investors, and with Jim Ryan et al under pressure to monetize tentpole franchises to the nth degree, resulting in practises which are becoming less and less consumer friendly as time goes by... Full price remakes and remasters, and remakes of remasters, or characters withheld from games on other platforms, or a refusal to budge from the premium price on releases and engage with subscription services the way Xbox has... Sony simply cannot compete with GamePass and lacks the cultural will to do so, really... so it would rather damage Xbox and Game Pass than try to do so.

Even worst, Sony can’t provide its clients with its own cloud and streaming technologies, they are using Microsoft’s technology and infrastructures (Azure data center). Every time a PlayStation player uses the ps store, save a game, stream on twitch, or plays via ps+, it goes through Azure. Not a good look for a company supposed to be #1 in the gaming industry. But let’s pretend that VR is a big business for PlayStation…

they also have a clause that states something about if they release on gamepass they could be pulled from the sony store and that they must provide the dollar amount that Microsoft Offered them to put it on gamepass so that they could match it. And its possible that they might pull the game from the store while it considers matching and thus publishers don't want to lose the sony market and thus don't publish to gamepass. Again could be a bit wrong in the exact details but I believe this was also talked about in the documents.

I don’t care if it is business, since all I care about as a customer is playing games and getting insight into this shows me PlayStation has no confidence in their revamped competing service PS+. I’m cancelling my sub to PS+ end of the month once I have completed Stray but if Sony did first party and more 3rd party titles day one like Xbox I’d be 100% signing up to PS+ premium for longer. I’m glad Sony is being called out, hopefully they realise they need to man up and actually compete and be innovative in their approach to Xbox Game Pass if they are not wanting to do day one titles that isn’t really Microsoft’s problem.

@@DestinL Yeah exactly, the key thing I think is people trying it out realising it’s good and word of mouth did the marketing which spread to PC players buying the game on Steam. I don’t agree with Sony that services like Xbox Game Pass and PS+ affect quality. That is a Sony mindset problem, because it directly goes against the pay to play model Sony has been riding for many years. The industry is changing because of Microsoft and their innovative approach to Xbox Game Pass, and Sony need to adapt and be innovative in their response. I've been playing via X-cloud a lot recently on my smartphone and razer mobile controller and it has been great! everything synced and feels like I have my games when I want them even outside of my home. We can now clearly see priorities, Xbox is consumer friendly and Sony is wallet hungry

As gamers we don’t necessarily look at how ruthless Sony was during the last generation. Exclusivity what’s the name of the game and either you want to make the exclusive content yourself, outright purchase exclusivity from the creator, or at the very least give the perception of exclusivity. Sony made games you could get nowhere else Sony paid developers to keep content exclusive or they paid for marketing deals that made it look like Sony was the place to play this game. You can name any Number of Sony developed games last generation that kicked ass. Come on look at how many times Sony has purchased exclusive rights to a video game from Square. Finally look at how Sony partnered with active vision that way you saw COD on Sony platforms and commercials with the PlayStation brand and COD. Yes COD was multi platform but you couldn’t tell by looking at the commercials. It was a ruthless campaign to let you know come here to play games. Now Microsoft is trying something different they are saying come here for GamePass no wait a minute you don’t have to come here for GamePass game pass is everywhere. That definitely threatens the exclusivity model because that means people one day on PlayStation I’m going to ask hey can we pay for GamePass here. Somebody will most definitely say no I mean come on look how they wanted to get rid of cross platform performance but this will allow consumers to ask that question if I can play Game Pass on a PC on a TV and any number of other areas which will be coming in the future (Nintendo switch we’re looking at you) then people are going to ask why can’t I play it on my PlayStation. In fact when Microsoft starts saying yay you can play this anywhere as long as they let us give you access people are going to turn their head and look at somebody and say will you give us access. By some estimates, Microsoft is paying hundreds of millions (and into the billions) to get a steady flow of games onto Game Pass. Sony is using their long-established partnerships and market-leader influence to sign contracts with select publishers to prevent new games from going into Game Pass. Microsoft can't be everywhere at once and prevent every contract from being signed. And you're weirdly happy to place the blame on Microsoft for not being all-powerful and all-knowing while looking past the actual responsible party involved here, making the deals to handicap Game Pass.

Gamepass is just tremendous value for money. In a country like South Africa, current gen games cost between 80 and 100USD, and not 70USD. One of the big reasons why I switched to XBOX this gen, after being on PS for 4 generations since the mid 90s.

Realistically sony should stop complaining and revive killzone and resistance. Unreal engine 5 killzone, and Bungie made resistance. It's the only way forward for Sony. Making a pass won't matter, they need to compete with halo and gears then the pass would matter. If you can make something like gears and halo from unreal engine killzone and a bungie made resistance. That would interest alot of people including Xbox gamers that may buy both consoles if Playstation had something for hardcore fps players that was made by Sony. Especially if those two titles were brought back.

It's crazy how with it MS is in this case, I literally haven't purchased the Extra tier of PS+ because their exclusives aren't day 1, and I already own most of the games in the extra tier because a lot of them are exclusives you couldn't get otherwise. Sony wouldn't be cutting their losses, they would be cutting their wrists if they did that. The console CoD, Diablo, Overwatch would immediately switch to X-Box. It slow down their console adoption while strengthening Microsoft. It would also set a bad precedent as Sony would be breaking contracts (apparently) and industry wide they would lose trust. Lastly, and most importantly, they would be throwing away a 30% cut on games that not only sell millions of units on their console, they make tens if not hundreds of millions in dlc.
