To me Sonys exclusivity deals are way dirtier than buying Studios. Sony is paying specifically to block games from platforms without taking the financial risk of acquiring these studios. Sonys been reaping the benefits of XBOX not getting fully funded but Phil Spencer changed the game and got the cash to push their weight around like Sonys been doing for years. This is long, so I apologize. While I agree with Destin's video (wholeheartedly) I can see the point being made by the devils advocate. The truth is that many of the innovations MS put in to play through Spencers leadership are moves that only MS could make. The cross play functionality (If MS is to be believed) required a major rework of Live. Gamepass requires content and will only be really profitable with in house studios and major numbers as well as an insane backbone and cloud infrastructure. That is a major gamble for for any company that isn't MS, Amazon, Apple, Google, etc.. Even for them it raises eyebrows because of the eye watering costs involved. Publishers the size of Zenimax media and Activision are major concerns and purchases for any of the Console players, except MS. Zenimax media is a weak of groceries. Activision a month. Should there be a serious bidding war, no one has a chance against MS. The only reason MS got their arses kicked last gen was because of the insane arrogance of MS leadership and them thinking that gamers are just going to go along with their plans. Everyone was telling them the x1 was underpowered. It was ugly. THe kinnect required too much room, no one wanted an always on camera in their living room. No one wanted a digital only future. Gamers in general, just don't care about the TV integration. Their reaction was tone deaf to say the least. Sony knew they won when the price tag was announced. I'm not overstating anything. It's been reported that Execs literally started laughing and dancing when they found out how much MS was going to sell the x1 for. So when Sony announced that the PS4 would be a hundred dollars less, what was MS's reaction? Stay the course. The one company that could give away the all the consoles they could manufacture that year, and still make a profit decided, nah that extra hundred was more important. Sorry for the sidebar and history, but that brings me up to my next point. The hardware was hampered, underpowered, and what did MS do? The mid cycle refresh. A move no one else would do under normal circumstances. While console manufactures do everything they can to reduce hardware costs and manufacturing, MS went in the opposite direction. They needed to fix their rep and get that hardware crown to let the people know they are still in it. If the last generation went in the opposite direction, Sony would not be able to do something like that. All we have to do is look at the PS3 era.

Look, the hysteria that the recent acquisitions have generated bear no relation to how business functions. The industry was becoming too console centric which was a dead end route that Phil Spencer and Microsoft realised and came up with a strategic decision that has proven to prescient. Sony was slow to understand this, but has now woken up to and is reacting. It takes time to turn a juggernaut around. Microsoft's agility allows them to compete in a value savvy way. It can't be a monopoly when you have companies like Tencent, Nintendo, EA etc looking to acquire developers and publishers at an equally aggressive rate. This is business and is by its nature a dog eat dog system. More acquisitions will follow and as long as the gamer is getting value for their purchases then there is nothing to fear.

People point to netflix to saying that gamepass prices will drastically raise prices, what people don't understand is in streaming Netflix holds the largest marketshare and holds alot of licenses for popular third party franchises so they have leverage to raise prices. Also Netflix usually only raises prices by 1 dollar every 2 years this year was an exception due to the high inflation. Microsoft will most likely not double the price of game pass they will most likely create a third teir at a higher price and lock some premium features behind it (like 4k game streaming, up to 4 gamer profiles integration with a different service).

And there's a huge difference in revenue streams. Netflix depends exclusively on subscriptions so they need to be constantly pumping out stuff to keep their user base. Either they keep an explosive growth or they raise the prices. Xbox, in addition to the subscription revenue, still has money coming in from paid DLC's, micro transactions and game sales.

Microsoft did disrupt the standard model of selling video games and guess what there’s nothing wrong with that. Disruption happens in industry all the time. Henry Ford disrupted wagon sales. Amazon disrupted hell everything. Look at Netflix they disrupted the movie industry. The music industry was disrupted by Apple and previous iterations of free music downloads. Now the same artist who were disrupted by Apple and their $.99 songs love the fact that you can make a hit song and not have to make a hit record. Disruptive forces happen all the time Sony was disruptive to Nintendo. Nobody said anything back then. What Microsoft is doing is introducing a new actually it’s not even knew a different approach to game sales. The subscription model nothing wrong with that. Netflix introduced the subscription model and we would all agree that the film industry is better for it. What Hass to happen now is Microsoft either succeed and others adapt or they don’t succeed. Either way the company has done nothing wrong for trying to do something differently.

Due to the amount of games I have found through gamepass and taking chances on ones I normally wouldn't that were not in gamepass, my purchases went from around 300ish cross platform to 3500+ in the Xbox ecosystem. I have played more types of games, bought games I never would have, and spent a ahitload of money but gamepass is bad. What an incredibly bad take on MS with what they are doing with gamepass.

If you add the Activision Blizzard market share to the current Xbox Market share, you don't even get 20%. You don't even get the same market share that Sony does. You need AT LEAST 60% in the us (varies from contry to country) to risk being considered a monopoly. Some people like to throw the word "monopoly" out there without even knowing the meaning, monopolies manipulate prices at their own will and constantly do costumer unfriendly practices like, in the case of videogames, charging you $70 for a videogame saying that it's neccesary even tho they had been breaking revenue records, and not giving you a free next-gen update of your games. You know who does that? Sony, you know why they will continue to do so? Because they will continue to have a bigger market share than Microsoft (at least in the short term)

This isn't a great rebuttal, simply by the virtue of the fact that it feels like you're paraphrasing and inferring to your audience what Adam meant, instead of showing what he actually said to your audience. His assertion wasn't specific about Xbox, it was a critique of MS as a corporation holding way too much power. While being 10 times larger than it's nearest competition (SONY), therefore being able to buy up large swaths of the industry while still undercutting all of the competition (things Sony can't do). It's monopolistic practices 101. But up all the vendors who sell to your competition, or even if you can't, you undercut everyone else because you have the capital to sustain losses. This is exactly what Walmart did to mom and pop stores and other "sell everything" stores.

You don't have to be a monopoly to violate anti-trust regulations. The fact that Microsoft will still be the third largest gaming company in terms of revenue after the Activision Blizzard deal doesn't guarantee that the deal will go through. "Anti-trust" comes into play when there is actually market manipulation, power abuse etc comes into happening. There is nothing inherently "anti-trust" about buying another company who aren't your direct competitors. So far, from what I have read, there is nothing illegal about this deal. At least in the USA (EU is a different beast). If by any chance, Government regulators block this deal; MS can sue them in court and pretty sure US government will lose this. Already have happened with AT&T and Time Warner merger where judge ripped apart Government's case.

What's sad is their basing arguing for the gaming industry to keep being shit for no logical reason. Like I've never even understood why PS fans argued so hard for exclusives. It's the weirdest thing. A common argument I run into is that Xbox sucks because they release their games On PC and thus have no exclusives. For some reason I need to explain over and over again why that's why I CHOOSE Xbox, because they don't force to be locked down to a single system to play their games and instead actually innovate in ways that benefit me as a user. Maybe I'd give a damn about PS exclusives again, if there was a PS anywhere program where I could buy a game once on PS and own it on two platforms with the save files transferring over and syncing 1:1. I have to say, before I got my Xbox One X and saw just how much Xbox under Phil was turning the industry around, I was about to quit gaming for the most part and do I don't know what. Everywhere I turned I just got screwed over by gaming companies. Mobile games Ruining everything with RNG and Microtransactions. Exclusives taking away my freedom as a gamer. Pricing in console and PC games going to shit with most AAA games being $120 for all the content (I didn't really get into indie games until Game Pass). And with services like Netflix and Spotify and ecosystems like Apple (which I now hate but always though they did this well), syncing all my information and making everything available to me on all my devices, I desperately wanted that in gaming. Before game pass it was unfathomable there'd be a service that let me play games on my console, on my pc, and on my phone with touch controls with the save data syncing across all instances. Now that's here and looking to improve. What we've had for years with video and movie streaming and mobile ecosystems is finally coming to gaming. This was all answered by Xbox and Game Pass, to the point where I'm happy to spend most my time and money on gaming again.
