I don’t understand why producers (movie or otherwise) have been making such an effort to remove Judeo-Christian influence from Indiana Jones. I feel like that was such an interesting aspect of it. Personally I think Raiders and Crusade were the best of the lot and they put such an interesting spin on Judeo-Christian artifacts and what they might do. Even the Temple of Doom had a more supernatural, otherworldly aspect to it. This move to more science-fiction, technology theme kinda kills the magic for me. Idk if I’m in the minority or not that’s just my own personal take on the trend of the franchise.

Isn't the Holy Grail story Anglo-Christian? Early Anglo-Christian stuff is utterly fascinating but totally neglected in the modern era. That whole Glastonbury area of England is permeated by history and legend (the Grail, Arthurian legends, the site of the first Christian church under direction of Joseph of Arimathaea, also possible ties to even more ancient sites like Stonehenge). I bring all that up to show that there's some amazing stuff to work with but that would require on the part of any writers some level of reverence and awe for history, religion (especially Christianity), and just plain old mystery. I think "modern" writers are broken people who can't fundamentally feel these things (especially about anything in real life) for some reason and they are often even hostile to them.

I would say the grail would be more Anglo-Christian but my overall point is that part of what made Indiana Jones so fun and interesting, at least for me, was the more supernatural, religious mystery behind these objects most simply label as dusty antiques. It really is a shame how much modern writers just completely disrespect this area. Like you said there are so many different avenues they can take that would harken back to those great movies.

Animations in avowed look extremely stiff, the type of thing we would expect from a game like Skyrim in 2011, I remember outerworlds being like that but since most combat in that game was ranged it wasn't as noticeable. That stiffness from the npcs combined with the melee combat the looks weightless and un-impactful is what is giving it the VR game feeling (also the art direction looks very VR-like). It feels like obsidian hasn't moved very far past the new vegas era of animation quality.

If this is all we're getting from Xbox, it's proof mega acquisitions are more destructive than anything. What about the people who made Rage 2? Redfall was a disaster (& that's on MS for having zero oversight or quality control on their acquired assets). I mean think about it, as I said "if this is all we're getting from Xbox" (aka for 2024, which is the case if the Dev Direct show is anything like the 2023 show which showcased Redfall, Starfield, Forza & HFR), then going into 2025 the Bethesda deal would have generated practically zilch in terms of quality releases. That also explains why the brand is struggling right now because the studios they're relying on aren't punching their weight (& I think budgets could be constrained as well). COD & Activision won't save Xbox.

Modern Gaming Audience. What that title implies and why regular gamers hate the term and should be avoided if you're a developer. 1. Spectacle over gameplay. Visuals can be fun to look at, but thats it. They are only there to look at, go ooh and ahh for two seconds or slightly more then move on. If you put it mostly spectacle in the game and less of the actual gameplay, the game will become boring very fast. 2. Abandoning the roots. Modernity always has the same trend. They axe the roots of what made the franchise what it was and inject stuff in that doesn't make sense in the franchise to subvert expectations. While gamers are usually open to such ideas at times, if you abandon the roots of a beloved franchise, the fans of the franchise will be especially upset. 3. Pandering and Woke politics. Its not a secret anymore that anything that's marketed to a 'modern audience' is full of pandering, inoffensive humor and political discussions that are insufferably woke and highly geared to the radical left wing side while demonizing the right wing side, radical or not. 4. Propaganda. Its a part two of 3, but it should be said so its not jumbled up in word salad. The person who said it'll be made for a modern audience gives me the vibe of someone who claims they are oppressed in society, while injecting their own views into media and being praised for it. Live and let live if you wish, but a developer touting the features like painted fingernails, feminine styles and rainbow pins, shirts and flags should tell you wokeness is a guarantee. 5. Movie game over video game. A movie game is more different than a video game. Video games are purely gameplay, engaging and giving you agency. A movie game gives the illusion of a video game, but the cutscenes are the main focus. Minutes and minutes of cutscenes, sometimes unskippable. Many modern audience titles shoot out these movie games like Spiderman 2 or God of War Ragnarok or even the Last of Us 2. 6. Unlikeable/butchered characters. A modern audience game, especially one with an existing franchise, tends to either make a extremely unlikeable character You're supposed to sympathize with, or make the main character you play as extremely flawed to the point you know they aren't supposed to act like that. Or in some cases, even both. Peter Parker in Spiderman 2 is a good example. The game portrays him as incompetent, neglectful to his girlfriend, and careless. In comparison to Miles, who is confirmed to replace Peter in the new games, where some either dont like or dont mind Miles, but dont want him to be the main Spiderman. 7. Ego-filled devs. A lot of dev teams of modern titles after or before or even during release would come across criticism of their game. The normal response would be to respond to the feedback in a respectful manner or not at all. The devs of these modern titles do not. They accuse the critics of being hateful bigots, tell them claims like 'Don't like it, don't buy it', and shit talk old fans of the franchise. While this would plummet their product and their business in some cases down the toilet, it should still be taken into account the ego the devs of the modern titles have. And those are the reasons why I will never trust a title with the introduction of 'For a Modern Audience'. I was fooled once by the new Star Wars, then by the new Saints Row. Never ever again.

Best Games of 2023 can we expect? I got a voice acting background and have to say that Yuri Lowenthal's voice has been such an inspiration for me since the Prince of Persia Trilogy. His performance in Spidey 2 is amazing. The vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like him and the late Kevin Conroy are a great impulse to not give up. You almost saw me as Leon in those new RE games :)

I think AVOWED's problem is the lack a cohesive art style. If you look at SKYRIM the first thing that pops are the snowy mountains and forests. The color palette is very simple to process, Black, White and Blue. ELDEN RING's theme revolves around GOLD. You have green grasslands bathed in golden light, enemies wearing gold, castles built with gold, a huge golden tree in the middle. The color palette is orange and green. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, everything is green because of the reactors, with a completely industrial design. It all ties to the narrative and story of each game. These games feature different biomes and enemy design but everything follows a general design principle. The so called visual narrative. Obsidian games like the outer worlds and avowed have none of that, colors are all over the place, there's no art direction, they think they are very creative coming up with the most outlandish enemy designs but none of then compliment each other. Feels like their artists are allowed to do whatever they want without rules and proper procedures. The fact that you can use guns along with magic wands should tell you how undisciplined they are.
