Xbox FS2020: Full Autopilot Flight (Planning, Setup & Flight) using the Series S/X Controller!

In this video, I show you how you can use Button combinations, on your Series S/X controller, to complete a fully planned route, using Autopilot.
The landing phase in this video is a little messy, but it shows my errors (for full transparency!)

Yeah, as long as they keep pumping out patches on a regular basis..I can't believe the sensitivity settings haven't been patched yet to where it saves reactivity and extreme dead zone settings..Also, the thrustmaster flight stick button assignments desperately need to be patched..

I had this occur and what I did to fix it was to click the X button to reset the flight plan, then press B to exit the world map and then return to the map and it lets me add waypoints. No idea what causes it though.

I do enjoy watching your tutorials on MSFS2020. I followed your tutorial here and tried it out. I flew from Inverness to Southampton via Edinburgh, Blackpool tower and Salisbury cathedral in the Cessna 172. 3 hours 48 minutes flying time !! Google maps has it as 586 miles but I am not sure how accurate FS is because if my airspeed is 111kts (128mph) then 4 hours flying is going to be 512 miles. Amazing experience. I did notice it wasn't flying along the route planned, but took autopilot off and changed the heading, then autopilot back on again to get back on my line on the VFR map.

Great video. I find it easier to use the RT bumper or LEft bumper to add and decrease my altitude settings. It’s a little bit easier to control than the right stick. Great video though.

@@Huddison when I take off there is a marker in the distance that says time climb and a number in feet. Next is shows a marker that says time approach in feet. You didn’t have them on your screen and I wasn’t sure if I should turn them off(and how to). Wasn’t exactly sure what they were for.

I think the "Bug" in the course line on the map, is the course line isn't drawn properly. You added Emirates Stadium as a waypoint, and that's exactly what your plane did. The course line didn't go there. Same thing for Windsor Castle. That's a waypoint you added, but Course line doesn't go all the way to it, but your plane will. You'll also notice, that the plane flew the lines shown on your world map when you set it up, but the VFR Map in game didn't show the same lines. Great video as usual Huddison!! 😎

The reason it doesn’t follow the line perfectly is because it’s treating your waypoints in the same way it treats VOR waypoints. If you watch the PFD, the magenta arrow looks just like it would as if it was following VOR and when it overflies the VOR, the magenta arrow flicks around and the plane heads off in that direction. It wasn’t off course when you took off, it was simply aiming for the first waypoint. Also for those having issues with getting Nav mode to work (I couldn’t get it to work reliably for ages), make sure that you have the magenta arrow. I didn’t have it at first and couldn’t work it out. The fix is that you press the CDI key along the bottom of the PFD until the magenta arrow appears. It’s the key to switch between the various modes of where the aircraft gets its navigation data from (VOR, GPS, etc). Edit: the glitch you have with some controls such as the altitude going off in the wrong direction to -9999 or whatever it did; this also happens with the heading, QNH and a few other controls. It’s a right pain in the arse. I use the Series S myself and I’ve bought a HOTAS and a keyboard and mouse which all work very nicely. If you use the mouse to change the altitude, heading etc, it works perfectly. It’s something to do with the controllers, not the sim itself. So if you have a mouse, use that for these controls, not the controller.

I find if u switch ALT ON before setting altitude. It defaults to a few hundred ft, then u can easily set it where u want and turn it back off till after ur airborne.

Thanks for another great detailed video. This is extremely helpful when you walk through each step of your setup. I have followed all of your steps and have one issue. My plane tracks the path accurately, but the altitude never passes 380 feet. It seems like a bug. I'll try to remove the free Garmin nxi that was offered in Marketplace to see if that helps. I found my altitude issue. Another Xbox S/X user mentioned deleting the free Garmin NXi from Marketplace. That solved the problem, and explains why there has been other odd altitude issues when flying other aircraft.

@@Huddison yes I just checked, it’s installed; I downloaded all the free updates after installing the game and that was one of them. It’s a weird little bug, if that’s what it is. I find that even when it just loads a simple straight line flight plan, and I turn on the ap and select nav, it shows’loc’ on the ap area of the mfd and the plane just goes straight. Doesn’t turn to hook up with the flight plan!

Is that with the 360 gamepad? I find that using the lightest touches with the trigger buttons works well; but that's on the Xbox consoles, using their gamepad.

Hi, I just couldn’t get on with controlling the aircraft with the Xbox controller so I bought a HOTAS (throttle and stick- like a fancy joystick with a throttle control) and it has twist for rudder on it. It makes things so much easier to control, particularly the fine control you need to make the aircraft fly smoothly. Having said that, rudder when not used in a coordinated manner will throw your aircraft about a bit. I’d ditch the controller for everything but looking around and drone control, and use a HOTAS for most of the other stuff.

Awesome info again, did a flight using auto pilot last night. Didn’t end well flying the grand caravan though as I exceeded the max speed when fiddling with buttons zoomed in after turning it off. Couldn’t figure out why max cruise speed says 195, but I couldn’t get it over 130 when cruising......only sped up in a nose dive 😂 Also in your videos it shows the adf/dme soft key on the garmin, mine only shows dme and the fms knob just says n/a when clicking on it. Any idea if theres a setting for adf to show? Every youtube video I watch just shows adf/dme, mine must have been installed by a dodgy dealer. Cheers

Hello again , has your game on Xbox series x been crashing and freezing , it just resets too. Mainly when I’m landing or the approach. It’s since the GOTY update , it’s been unplayable to do a flight :(. I reported it on Twitter and some others are having the same as me. They need to stop working on all the other stuff and make it a bug free game first!

Im having issues, when i set up a flight plan i start from a ramp, when i leave the airport and put on AP and Nav my plane turns back to the airport, ive noticed the pink line starts at the airport, but my planes just flys over the airport then carrys on in a straight line, ignoring the GPS route, yes, im definitely on NAV and not HDG

Which aircraft is that in? It could be that you've turned on Nav, but are too far from the course to capture it.

@@Huddison The standard Cessna 172, im following the course flying straight out form the airport, but when i get to 1500ft and turn on the AP and NAV my plane does a 180 and starts heading back to the airport, almost like it thinks it needs to hit the checkpoint at the airport before moving onto the next checkpoint, but when it gets back to the airport in then just keeps flying straight until i stop it

When you activate Autopilot, it will stay at the altitude you are at when you activate it, unless you give it commands to climb or descend. See my Back To Basics With MSFS series for lessons on this.

Yes unfortunately I'm still having the same issue..The bug is bugging me:). I think my co-pilot is a Tottenham fan. I've mapped my controller the same..Everything works fine but I still just heads straight for Heathrow. One thing I have noticed...Once I'm on the runway my Garmin isn't set to GPS by default like in this tutorial it's on LOC1 I have to hit the CDI soft key to change it. No idea why that should make a difference. Some good news though if I fly the Cessna Citation it works perfectly so I'm guessing it's something to do with the G1000NXi. Thanks anyway. It's a really helpful tutorial much appreciated.

Try going to content manager and seeing if there is an update for the Garmin 1000. I had the same issue and it was fixed after installing the update.

I have the problem when I start a longer flight that my controller switches off in the autopilot after 10 minutes or the game lands in the pause menu. Thus, the flight does not go any further. I’m using a mouse and I’m not able to hold on the NAV once the FLP has been set. I can hold on HDG, ALT (changing che VS) but even though I have a route on the right screen, I do not find a button to hold on the NAV… 😢

To be clear: are you asking where the NAV button is?

@@Huddison I know where the button is on the G1000 but if I push it, the only thing that changes is a LOC label on the right side of the ROL one, while it should change the ROL to NAV. The plane does not follow any route. It works using HDG only, but it does go straight following the heading that I choose with the gear… It works on other planes, with an older GPS.

@@liberaelsapo Thanks Marco - I'll be investigating that when I do my next video on using a Mouse & keyboard with the Series S. It's not good if the NAV button is inoperable.

The biggest issue I’m running into on the Xbox is if I am trying to do a long multi hour flight and go afk the sim always automatically pauses.. I’ve tried even keeping something on one of the controller sticks but that doesn’t appear to prevent it either.. do you have any idea how you can keep the sim from automatically pausing when away?

@@Huddison Thanks! For reference I’m also using the Hotas One so both joystick and controller are obviously on, but eventually the controller turns off and/or the game will auto pause. Let me know what you find!

Do you have your default controller plugged into the Xbox, via a USB cable? That's one option to stop it turning off - also check power settings, in settings: ensure that the Xbox never goes into sleep mode (or similar).

@@Huddison I have the Hotas one plugged in via usb but the Xbox controller is wireless. That’s a good idea about the Xbox power settings, I’ll have to check that!

Plug your HOTAS in, fire up your console and THEN switch on your game pad (once it’s all on and powered up). It’ll appear as a secondary controller, not the main one. This should (when it behaves itself) stop it from auto pausing.

Anyone having any issues... if you have The Garmin G1000 NXi addon then delete it. It took me a few hours to figure out why my plane wouldn't follow the GPS - this was why

You may also have been having the same issue I was. Make sure there’s a magenta arrow in the PFD pointing upwards from bottom to top of the heading circle. If it’s not there, press the CDI button on the PFD a couple of times until it appears. Make sure you’re in Nav mode by clicking the Nav button to on, make sure heading mode is off so it’s not conflicting, and away you go. Just remember that it flies direct waypoint to waypoint so it won’t follow the line perfectly.

This is not a "game" for kids. You should be able to set autopilot on and the plane will reach its programmed destination. The sub menu for autopilot is crazy who can remember all these button combinations on top of all the other settings? This is really hard!

There’s a bug for me when flying vfr atc never answers at destination airport for landing, I land anyway and then my coms will only connect to the airport I departed from can’t talk to the airport I’m at.

Atc is very buggy I've noticed. There's occasions where it won't work at all.

@@Huddison Yup sometimes they won’t even respond form the departure airport aswell and flight following never seems to work.

Might’ve found d out the root of my problem, I think the g1000 working title mod is having conflicts with the vanilla game engine, things work pretty well in the TBM 930 but the planes with the G1000 system screws everything up on the ATC side, that’s just a hypothesis tho I need to do more testing.

It depends on where you’re flying to. Some airfields don’t have ATC to respond to you. Having said that I’ve tuned to one ATC and had another answer. I wanted to land at Kinloss but had Leuchars nearby answering, even though I tuned to Kinloss. They even only have Leuchars runway options. I think this isn’t a bug as such but a mismatch of data.

I Bought Xbox series X for MSFS 2020 I've been playing ps 5 since it was released I have over 30 of the top games but now my PlayStation 5 is collecting dust 😂😂 Haven't touched it since I bought MSFS , I okay no other games

When I try to use my Xbox controller with my Series X and MSFS2020, I can't get the reticle on the screen (as in this video) to allow me to move it around and make selections. My bumper buttons allow me to go left and right by tabs at the top, and if I'm on a selection screen where there are multiple boxes (i.e. Training Lessons) I can't choose anything due to not having that reticle. Anybody have any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong? I have gone into settings and reset to the default settings for the Xbox controller. Thanks in advance.

@@Huddison I'm out of town at the moment but will try that when I get back home. I seem to remember trying every button, knob, stick, and the d-pad and nothing happened but I will try it again. Thanks! Great video by the way. I've been playing it on the PC ever since it came out (with a Thrustmaster HOTAS) and it works great on PC - except for the load times - but would like to play it on Xbox Series X as well. Will eventually get a yoke (when I can find one in-stock) but until then figured I'd try it with the Xbox controller. Thanks again.

@@Huddison Yeah I tried the left analogue stick and still get nothing. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I don't seem to find anyone else having this problem. I've tried it with both the controller that came with the Xbox, a wired Xbox 360 controller, and the new Elite 2 controller and they all so the same. Nothing. May try uninstalling and then reinstalling MSFS and see if that makes a difference.

Do you have Xbox Live? It's unfortunately required for Xbox MSFS multiplayer.

Do you know how to get rid of that stupid cursor that is like a reticule which is also on the pc. I have changed every control function and there is nothing that its linked to, it just pops up randomly and its not changing to legacy as many claim because that doesnt work. They are dumbing this sim down to suit consoles which is bloody annoying. Flight sims are just not suited for consoles.
