Xbox. It’s a video game thing. Video game things you play. On the TV. With a box. But what if you didn’t? What if Xbox wasn’t a box at all? What if we were the Xbox the whole time?
Today I wanna look at new developments from Microsoft regarding the brand, and maybe remember how we got here.

so a few hours before this video went live, Microsoft announced xCloud servers are now based on Xbox Series X rather than the Xbox One, so games will look better. But more importantly it appears browser support of xCloud is out today, so, kinda wish they announced that before the video was done.

Look at Nintendo and you see why. Servers for shit you aren't paying for are gonna naturally be shit since there's no way P2P will ever work in anything semi-competitive, which is the demographics xbox and playstation catered to since they started releasing FPS games (aka literally day 1 with xbox and PS2 for Sony.)

It's very possible that Microsoft's next move is to become an internet provider too. It makes so much sense too. They are a tech company, their "Netflix for gaming" need a better internet (which, let's be honest, most of the internet provider out there is just bad) and they have an insanely deep pocket and connection Either that or Starlink will be finished first and then Microsoft become their partner of sort and target this Netflix for gaming idea into the global market

At this point xbox is such a staple of the gaming medium that it likely will never go anywhere. It's shown time and time again that they want the entire collection of games and accessibility available to be carried forward and expanded upon, which is pretty indicative of the company and practice itself. No matter where Microsoft goes next for its constantly expanding mediums and ideas, xbox is always gonna be a constant that won't go anywhere. If it did go anywhere, there would be such an active uproar from the community that they'd almost be obligated to bring it back. Otherwise the publicity backlash would hurt them far more than any direct monetary one

That’s crazy, time and time again the idea of xbox leaving will result in a lot of backlash that’s shows how much people love brand. If only that could’ve happened with Sega, they were also a such beloved brand that had to leave but it seemed no one cared at that point. Sega was always more innovative than xbox, yet we let Sega die. No idea why they would want to keep xbox around since time and time again Microsoft has dropped the ball so many times and they’re still fine in terms of loyalty towards the brand.

Like Sega isn’t anywhere close to being dead. In fact they’re doing really well for the last many years, with Yakuza and Persona becoming immense successes. The idea that XBOX becoming a service, maximising the use of the Azure cloud stack, not just by streaming but also running AI-assisted gaming (e.g., MS flight simulator) is probably what excited Nadella to push for XBOX and be the Netflix of gaming. I'm actually really happy with xCloud right now. I was a huge detractor at first, and I'm still hesitant to proclaim love for it, but man has it been nice to have. In my living situation I have no room for a television, and I can barely run a heater and a cellphone charger at the same time without blowing the breaker. It's pretty much handheld gaming only for me. I got my switch, my phone, and an old ass laptop that can barely run Sims 2, and a 40 GB hotspot is my only internet. But with xCloud I can actually kinda game sometimes. Internet's not always great, and some games run better than others, but as long as I'm not trying to play anything too fast-paced past my data limit, it's actually functional. Also it's nice when you're playing on somebody else's console but they don't have a game installed. You can stream it instead of installing unwanted games onto somebody else's hardware. Also no download. Super convenient. That said, most gamers will have a TV, console/PC, and home internet service, and I'm really not sure I ever would've cared about it if I had those things.

Even when cloud streaming becomes a thing by the time it does goal posts will shift such as in the refresh rates; where the typical console/PC by that time will probably do 240hz+ (and up to 4k if not higher) and streaming will have only up to probably 90-120hz at best (also assuming up to 4k). But to note phones also will become dramatically more powerful to such an extent in which they might be the “next” console experience which Sony has their feet dipped into as well which might mean that “Xbox phone” could unironcally be a thing in the future

I don't think the world is ready yet for cloud gaming, as the internet isn't capable of doing it in most places right now as you've already pointed out. I think right now they should focus more on Game Pass and cross-play. But with PC, they should focus more on Steam integration with their Xbox library, instead of the Microsoft Store which nobody wants to use. It would also help if they made their Steam releases more optimal at launch, rather than release them in a broken state and then patch it up later down the line. The Xbox console would still benefit as an all in one console that can support as many titles as possible, provided they get around to adding additional Xbox Original and Xbox 360 titles, when or if that will happen.

Its a very interesting time to be in gaming, you have this kind of thing going on with Xbox and Microsoft, you have the disaster that turned out to be the PS5, you have Switch shipping out a version of the Switch with some fancy screens they wanted to get rid of, and seems to be pulling back from the now very outdated Switch, you've got enormous prices for GPUs that are thankfully said to be going down soon, and then on top of all that crap, Valve just comes out of nowhere with the Steam Deck. To me it's like consoles have begun to see their last bits of life in general before they're just, fazed out of mainstream, it's always been a point of contention but really, when you have upgradable hardware on a PC, the longevity is always going to be there, where with consoles they'll pile up in your closet as newer ones come out with better gear, which isn't price or hardware efficient at all. The Deck is going to suffer the same fate, but it's clearly a kind of trial for Valve to introduce more people to Steam and PC gaming in general at a time where it just so happens that consoles are kinda suffering. It's kind of an empowerment to existing or new PC gamers than just a push to move to consoles. I'm really eager to see what happens with all of it.

MS has the right idea of mixing PC and Xbox together (so to speak as you said). Consoles are to expensive for me and barley have any games worth paying $500 every few years for. Now I just stick to PC gaming. And with MS and even Sony putting some games on PC, I for sure won't go back to consoles. I know some argue PC gaming isn't expensive, but it depends on what kind of PC person you are. A. The person who always needs the latest hardware. If your this person, of course it will cost you insane amounts of money just to push out a few extra frames. B. The person who builds their PC and doesn't really upgrade until they have no choice. Then its cheaper then console gaming. My current PC I built in 2014 for about $1100. It still runs games just fine. I don't have a 4k screen I can't run games in 4K. But lets face it, unless your screen is insanely huge, you won't notice the 4k really. I probably won't buy any upgrades until 2025, if not later. And if I do it will probably be a video card. Currently I got a 2070 Super.

Every few years? Who is paying $500 every few years for a new console? PS4 was $400 & released in 2013. PS5 released at $400 & $500 in 2020. That's 7 years if you're buying day one. I'm a PC gamer, and I've always spent WAY more on my PC than any console. My GPU alone, which is several years old now (RTX 2070 Super), sell for nearly $1,000 alone (some models more than that). That's not including a processor, motherboard, RAM, m.2 NVMe drive/SSD, case, fans/cooling, etc. Or if you're talking the $500 models of new systems, they even come with 4k UHD Blu-ray players on top of all that. I don't have a Series X or PS5, just the PC I built & a Switch. But I feel it's dishonest to try & act like console gaming is expensive & PC gaming is cheaper. It's really not.

Honestly, I don't see microsoft working on another console after the series x, especially with the purchase of Activision/Blizzard. Why is that? Simple, Microsoft hasn't released a single xbox exclusive since the end of the first year of the Xbox One, where all games have since been released on both Xbox AND PC. This should be a major warning sign as Microsoft has been doing this even more now, further pushing towards releasing games onto the pc. So what that tells me is that after the end of the Series X, Microsoft may no longer be focusing on consoles and instead just focusing on releasing software and games onto pc and the other consoles. This would make them more money without having to pump money into a console.

I think Microsoft should rather go for more gaming products than consoles and encourage more PC gaming since it's literally superior in erry possible way. While they have perfected controller designs, they should more importantly focus on its hardware now and improve it further. They already make better controllers than what Sony can sit out in terms of long term use and ergonomics at least, but they are a bit behind on latency. And Nintendo should take notes from both. Buying out companies like Activision/Blizzard could be great. Making sure we get the highest quality games, safest and better managed work environments, and make the games available everywhere. In which they can then claim errybody plays Xbox games. Because they technically are! They'll be playing them on the Normiestations more than the Xbox itself, but PC gaming contains like 80% of the world's gaming population. It's why each generation of consoles sell less and less and the oldest of consoles always are at the top of the list. Bcuz less and less people buy consoles each generation due to PC gaming being superior in erry possible way. It makes the whole idea of consoles just very stupid in erry way with the exception of Nintendo and Steam Deck.

Funny you say that about the ps2 because microsoft themselfs tried to kill pc gaming during the 360 era even paying publishes to not release their games on pc like what happened with alan wake

the internet speed issue is soon to be fixed with starlink, spacex's satellite internet capable of right now of 200-500 mbps down and 150-300 mbps up if Elons goals are achieved that number will one day reach 10 gbps, a whole GB of data every second and due to the usage of thousands of low earth orbit satellites bandwidth and latency are not an issue this will not only bring high speed internet to those that done have it, it will bring high speed internet to the 3.2 billion people who dont have internet access at all cloud gaming could really become the norm here soon

Xbox now makes gaming accessible via smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, etc. and is partnering with and buying out major game studios. Would there be any reason other than collector's impulse to go out and buy the physical consoles? Would Xbox soon cease to produce consoles and make gaming all cloud based due to these reduced console sales? Would they take a financial hit since everybody could get into games via buying a $30 used controller and a monthly $15 Game Pass Ultimate subscription instead of buying a $500 console? Could having more monthly cloud subscribers worldwide outweigh the revenue gained from one time console sales in stores? How long would it take for that inevitable loss to turn into positive revenue as the world adjusts to Microsoft's cloud gaming being shoved down our throats? How will this hurt Sony and Nintendo since people will most likely find Xbox's cheaper gaming options less expensive? Will Sony eventually follow the cloud gaming trend?

I don’t live in “most places”, but statistically most people don’t live there. I have Gigabit internet for $90 a month (AT&T Miami), most major cities have real Gigabit at this point. On this point you’re honestly just wrong and it’s accelerating. Rural Ohio isn’t a population center my dude.

Hey Whimsu. I was at time of Microsoft BoBs existence not a computer Nerd. I was not even Born. Therefore I do not get the reference. I know who Siri Apple is, and who Alexa Amazon is, I even know Bonzai Buddy, but Microsoft Bob is a foreign concept to me. Your video is not inclusive enough for my tastes but it still funny so nevertheless I remain subscribed. But be careful, if you post cringe: you will lose subscriber. Good video! :)

BoB isn't what you think it is. It was before all of those and I highly suggest you look into it. It was a hilariously massive failure in terms of the direction Microsoft thought the GUI was going to go.

Microsoft BoB was one of these 90s GUI overlay programs in attempt to make using the computer more....easier understand, in this case by using a house analogy. They tended to fail cuz while maybe (although this is a bit dubious) it helped an old person (or so) 'understand' to use the PC better, it was faster just doing it from the regular Windows 95/98 GUI with its folders, windows, etc motif. Microsoft BoB did introduce the little buddies like clippy and the little dog that sometimes pops up in Windows XP. The channel LGR ha a video explaining it in detail.
