@@Anthony8851 Well, first impressions matter, but they aren't the sole reason Xbox One got trounced by PS4. The PS3 was in a somewhat similar situation as the Xbox One early in the seventh-generation, though sort of for opposite reasons. But Sony humbled themselves and then got to work putting out amazing games for the PS3, and ended up outselling Xbox 360 by a hair. Had Microsoft done the same thing, we might be having a different conversation, but they refused, and still refuse, to heavily invest in new exclusive games.

Except they sat comfortably at third and had better consumer deals like the game pass and bringing the exclusives over to pc to effectively merge the two platforms exclusively wise. While the ps4 outsold it due to not fucking up the first impression and having a garbage name and having the cheaper price. Although both sony and microsoft had worst exclusives when compared to the ps3 360 gen although ps4 excluvies are better but at best average with a handfull being great with microsofts being mostly meh with exception of forza and gears being damn good. Then the switch came and took number one from sony due to it being a portable and home console hybrid and having great exclusives with a handful of meh and not needing a half gen refresh like sony and microsoft.

They got their target audiences mixed up, when they studied the data from the 360 it showed masses of casual users primarily using it to stream Netflix and other video, play EA sports titles, and Call of Duty. They pitched the presentation as if that was who was watching. However casual users don't typically watch these types of presentations. The hardcore gamers who do watch these presentations were more interested in unique gaming experiences, console exclusives, upgraded game features like higher resolution, better graphics, higher framerate, and high end hardware specs. This pitch fell very flat with the hardcore crowd that tuned in.

Also they didn't research the fact that Europe is 50Htz TV so when watching TV through the xbox it looked weird due to mismatch on refresh/framerates.

The thing is they thought they already had the gamers in the bag and it was not making them a decent profit (on Microsoft's scale). Their target for XONE was a billion (!) users (their words). The only way to achieve that was with something more mainstream than core gaming, which is TV and sports. They were 100% aware of what they were doing, but they didn't expect a backlash, because they already had the most desired gaming box. They wanted to extend the user base and instead lost what they already had.

Yup. Microsoft managed to launch a console based on cable box integration just as online streaming started hitting critical mass. The idea they were pushing for was to make the XBox a thing that would appeal to general audiences and could do just about everything you'd use a screen for: internet browsing, watching TV, Netflix, etc. This is why they called it the XBox One: it was meant to be "all-in-one." The problem is, of course, that the majority of people watching these presentations are gamers, and they care primarily about games. And when you only touch on sports games and Call of Duty, games that are available on all consoles anyway, then spend the rest of the presentation talking about a bunch of stuff that isn't gaming, well...

Yeah, except Xbox destroys Playstation in terms of variety of games, number of games released and also quality. Because yes, playing the same copy pasted basic ass third person action game over and over is not quality. Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2 are better than any game made by Playstation in the last 13 years. Game Pass has revolutionized the industry and Microsoft just closed their best quarter ever. Microsoft also has a higher average metascore than Playstation despite having released twice the amount of games as Playstation. They've recovered from this in a huge way. They're just not selling more consoles than Nintendo or Sony, which doesn't matter because it's not their priority.

Xbox have a more powerful hardware, better ecosystem (PC, cloud, mobile, play anywhere), backwards compatibility, it's 2024 and PS still don't have a good backwards compatibility, it's a shame. Not to mention better services like game pass, and Live is stabler than PSN. Only thing good that Sony have is some ex-clusive games, but this topic is completely based on personal taste, and imo, MS games are better.
