Yea only heard praise about the game personally…Wonder what would’ve happened if it was allowed to sell itself before going on gamepass. Nowadays it is so hard to see indies or what not worth anything without word of mouth. As steam as a PC store is one of the only ones that allow discovery and even then it has almost 100k games on its store(most of which are just trash games tbh) I can’t imagine the discoverability on other stores or consoles.

I did buy it (on PC), and I didn't buy it on sale, but I didn't hear about it either and bought it quite a while after its release. It is in fact awesome, although I found the timing for some of the last rhythm sequences in the story somewhat counterintuitive and was stuck for a few hours (from watching streamers, either it's just me or the timing was changed in a patch later). @altrag
@altrag 15 күн бұрын
Well... yeah. If "soulless corporate slop" or "broke woke" makes a billion dollars while "real games" lose money, the corporation is going to go with the billion dollars. Corporations don't exist to make you happy or provide you with good products. They exist to make money. If making you happy and providing good products makes them more money then great, everybody wins. If making you happy and providing good products doesn't make them more money, they simply won't do that. There's way too many people - especially in the US where decades of deregulation porn has desensitized the population to corporate overreach - that cling to the idealized entry level description of capitalism where everybody needs what the other guy builds, and we're all better off when we trade. There's a reason that's _entry level._ It's not the full story, and definitely doesn't account for the existence of shareholder-owned corporations. Stop believing that corporations are going to do whatever you happen to think is "good", or even whatever is objectively "good". They're going to do what makes the most money, end of story.

True. Pulp Fiction cost $8 million to make, and grossed over $200 million. But it was a risky film to put out. Studios want the sure thing, they don't want to take risks. They think they can buy their way into being a blockbuster with a lot of CGI and family friendly jokes. No risks, and a lot of money spent. Both game studios and movie studios need to take risks on smaller, ballsier projects that push boundaries and expectations. Focus on making it fun/entertaining, not just "impressive looking"

The issue is not the cost of the games, it's that they're not good. A $300m movie isn't a bad investment when the movie makes twice that back or even a billion.. GTA6 is going to end up costing Rockstar about $1b to make but it's easily going to make that back 3 or 4 fold so we know it's a good investment. The fact they take 30% of the profits of EVERY COPY of EVERY game EVER sold is kind of crazy though, as much as i love steam there needs to be more competition to bring that 30% down to at least a 20%. So far there's nothing that even comes close to steam and since its been around for so long people get pissed when there's any kind of competition cause they want everything in one place. I love steam but Taking such a huge cut of profits for simply allowing them to sell on their platform negatively impacts the gaming economy as a whole as it allows less money to be reinvested into developers making more games, and im not talking about just triple AAA games. Tons of indie games and AA games are affected by that enormous steam tax. Its both a blessing and a curse that steam is as good as it is for consumers.

@JustAnotherAccount8 NO, unfortunately your solution will never happen/work. They are the publisher, they are not there for the love of gaming, they are there only there for the BUSINESS of MAKING MONEY from games AND to please the investors. SO whoever sits on that seat, it's all fucking the same! The easy solution to this, is just simply vote with your wallet, stop paying these crappy/shady companies all together. But that's only on theory. Look how many people still pay for EA and their exploitative practices, like the "surprised mechanics, over the years? Or support/defending shady gaming companies, after they have fucked the community over and over? And how much money those Gatcha games, mobile games, games plagued with micro-transaction and gambling mechanics make? The gaming community should first take some accountability and look at what we are supporting all these time. And because of the money that was thrown into those shitty practices in gaming, that's why the gaming industry is in such a state.

24:00 -ish. You could do it, though it would probably have to be done in such a way that it _only_ targeted cloud players. There couldn't be any cross-platform between cloud and non-cloud, and the controls would have to also be more lax in cloud to accommodate the additional lag. The same goes for basically any game that's remotely reaction-based though. Even something like WoW playing completely casual would lead to far too many deaths just doing WQs and the like if you were suddenly stuck with another 500ms latency. The other possibility they could attempt would be to create an entirely new set of APIs that let them divide up the GPU (and maybe CPU as well) work between the client and server. Increase the minimum requirements for client hardware in order to reduce the latency somewhat. They would of course need developer buy-in on that as it wouldn't be (or at least I suspect it's very unlikely) to be something that could be done transparently within the cloud server drivers, but unlike their competitors, MS also controls DirectX and they could absolutely make a DX13 that focuses on that client/server division of work. (That said, I have no idea how - or if - such a division of labor would work or if it would be a true net positive for the games. Just an idea that _might_ work if they can define the APIs well enough.)

As a software developer and game dev in my spare time for well over 16 years now, can confidently say that large software projects with ballooning budgets are a thing of the 90's that have persisted into the future because of ignorance. Attempts to solve it were being agile and running rapid prototyping, which worked before people like this decided to redefine "agile" into their own corporate version of events that we work with today. Want to solve this problem outright? Break your studio into small teams and host internal game jams over a 2mo long period. Give any that are good another 4-6mo of iteration and release the damn games.

It's is absolutely mind blowing to hear them say "making a triple A game is expensive and hard" when Nintendo is sitting across the competitive table from you. Stop spending money on celebrity guest appearances and keep the money in your games and it wouldn't be a fucking problem. Nintendo regularly makes award winning games and is competitive yearly for game of the year with titles on 2 generations old hardware and not a spoken fucking line of dialogue in the game. Don't sit there and act like it's hard when you have a thousand examples of why it's not right in front of you.
@gryph0n55
@gryph0n55 18 күн бұрын
Hey my guy, Japanese companies are a very VERY bad example to pick from about judging if a product to make is hard and/or expensive. For one thing, Nintendo games are expensive to make, you’re just saying that for no reason, you’ve never been given any reason to think they aren’t expensive to make. Do you honestly believe it didn’t cost a fucking fortune to license as many non-Nintendo franchises as they did to use in Smash Bros Ultimate? I would almost guarantee you if Nintendo was public about exact costs of things that Ultimate would have one of the highest post-launch content costs of any modern game with how expensive it was to get so many DLC characters in there. Nevermind how extremely expensive Nintendo’s extensive global marketing absolutely is given the scale of it they do for almost every major title they release. But beyond that, the main issue, you implying “well this Japanese company can regularly put out high quality games relatively easily”, without any sense for the fact that Japanese animation and game companies are notoriously some of the most difficult, overbearing, stressful, and crunch-intensive entertainment and content creation companies in existence. So I guess you using Nintendo as an example as to why it’s not hard to make a AAA game does work, so long as you ignore the mountain of debilitated, depressed, exhausted, underpaid developers and coders and designers that created these things under crunch conditions that often put western game companies to shame. Yeah that appearance of Nintendo managing to consistently not have a hard time making good AAA games is built on the back of some of the worst working conditions and pressures in the entire industry of game development.
@LazyActor

@@gryph0n55 why are you conflating the cost of making a game with the cost of purchasing the rights to make a game with someone else's intellectual property?
@gryph0n55
@gryph0n55 18 күн бұрын
@@LazyActor Because when that’s how you’re making your game, that IS the cost of making it. That’s not a conflation, that’s how cost works. If it costs X dollars to make a game, and X includes this specific thing, then that specific thing is included in the cost to make a game. Basically every game licenses shit, that’s a part of the cost of basically every game. Halo has done it for 20 years, COD does it every year, Fortnite does it every few months, Smash Bros has done it for almost 20 years, Far Cry does it, League of Legends does it, Overwatch does it, let’s not even mention engine licenses or pre-made model/textures bought off asset stores. Why are you acting like a normal thing that appears in virtually every game that is part of the cost of making the game shouldn’t be included when talking about how much it costs to make a game? Also btw, my point also made it clear that Nintendo’s games are all expensive, not just Smash and not just because of licensing. There’s literally no reason to NOT think they’re expensive. I was just using Smash Ultimate as an example because despite the argument this guy is trying to make, Nintendo would actually be among the top in terms of how expensive it was to support a game’s content post-launch given the cost to do what they did with DLC. So not only are they just generally making expensive games anyways, but they even have a relevant example of going even above the industry standard of expense to make a game.
@SaintConnor
@SaintConnor 18 күн бұрын
@@gryph0n55 For starters "my guy", I gave specific categorical examples as comparison between Nintendo and other companies. At no point did I say it was inexpensive to make a game. I'm well aware that it's costly in the grand scheme of things and you can't just make a game with some pocket lint and hopes and dreams. And I sure as fuck didn't bring up licensing so no idea why you threw that shit in there. My *point* was these companies OVER spend on shit that isn't necessary to making a quality AAA game. I think it's super funny you bring up Far Cry because the whole thing I'm trying to drive home is no one gives a shit if Giancarlo Esposito gets slapped into the game if the game is trash. That's money wasted that could have been added polish to making the game better. There are plenty of talented voice actors, that cost far less, that you could create an original character around that would fit the bill and create a greater experience. This is exactly why I brought up Nintendo. Because Tears of the Kingdom, while yes, was also expensive to make (especially due to delays, remote work/COVID), it wasn't near the cost of FC6 and they did it on, again, older hardware and with characters that grunt, groan and cry for dialogue. Also on a budget comparison, TotK had a roughly $183 million budget including marketing and all costs. Modern Warfare 2 had a budget of $200 million....IN 2009.... The point is, and has always been, make good fucking games and the rest of the shit doesn't matter. I imagine with Hi-fi Rush was that if that studio was just, on it's own, making the game without being bankrolled by Microsoft, the amount of money they made would've been a success to them, at least in the short run. But when you have someone else bankrolling, the line you need to hit to break even is now higher because you need to not only pay off all the expenses internally of making that game, but also pay back Microsoft along with delivering to them a profit. The actual statistics for people playing the game isn't aligned with the level of the budget they used. The numbers are closer in the overall to a successful indie game that had less marketing, not something big budget with a major company funding it.

This is the problem with Affirmative Action and DEI: She very well could be the most qualified person for this job. BUT! In the back of my mind, there's a small voice saying, "I wonder if this Black Woman got the job as the PRESIDENT OF XBOX because she's qualified... or because she happens to be Black AND a Woman." If AA and DEI didn't exist, that question would never come up in my mind. I would see a black woman as the president of Xbox and it wouldn't even occur to me that she might have been hired based on her immutable characteristics. I would just assume she's the most qualified for the position.

you got the AI part backwards, she was asked, she doesn't actually have any plans for AI, but it's absolutely forbidden for any company nowadays to say they don't care much, so she had to make up generic contextless speech about how AI is good and important lest the stock prices drop, and she only did that because investors would pitchfork her if she says she doesn't know where to put AI in games, and they're more concerned about cloud bullshit and reducing the costs of making games
