12:30 Computer gaming has always been way bigger than console. There are so much more people who play on computers, and that is not even a new development. Even back in the 1980ties everyone was playing on computers - C64, Amiga, Atari ST. And then, beginning in the 90ties, people switched to PCs instead. PC gaming is and always has been way bigger than consoles.

I feel like anyone who buys a Series S would understand they're paying for less, so they are getting less. And if I was a Series S user, I'd rather at least get to play a game like BG3 solo, than wait on a mp feature I wouldn't even use, personally.

Just think about Series X users (like myself) getting royally screwed over for actually having the capable machine for running the game, and being restricted from it. Thankfully, PS5 and PC gamers (like myself :) aren't being penalized for being core gamers just wanting to game w/o the self inflicted complexities MS has introduced into its ecosystem.

For once a big company (Microsoft) is trying to be pro consumer by giving lower cost gaming options to their community and simplifying the experience across their platform. And yet they get dogpiled on because a few developers are upset they have to make their games work without sucking up your system memory like a hot dog eating contest. It's like if people complained about congestion in a city and the city planners said the real problem was all the poor people riding buses and not their garbage road network.

@@iRadinVersethe series S isn't for poor people, it's for lazy people. The vast majority of poor people like us grew up buying and selling/trading games. The Series S shuts down during Alan Wake 2, Immortals Of Aveum, and even Robocop etc. The system can't even handle those games at lower resolutions without shutting itself down. Mainly from the size. So even though it's equivalent to the 1650, isn't good. Also the 3050 is actually the most popular card in PC's atm.

I think Microsoft should try to get creative and figure out a way to use the storage slot to add an expansion card to boost the CPU/RAM/GPU (whichever is the real bottleneck) kind of like what Nintendo did on the N64. They can call it the Xbox S+ Xpansion card and have a second storage slot on it so you can still add the additional storage. But realistically, the Series S isn't lower specs than many PCs that seem to have no issues running games with Low settings. I 137% blame the developers for their issues.

Those massive publishers have the resources, money, and manpower to develop for multiple platforms simultaneously. It’s like how you see indies start out on pc then move to consoles one by one. Worth noting that the Series S (and X, and PS5) doesn't have dedicated VRAM, they have custom APUs with a RAM pool shared between the CPU and GPU, so that 8Gb on the Series S isn't even really 8gb (though the S actually has 10Gb, with 2Gb being allocated for the OS). On PC, the minimum spec for BG3 is 8Gb of system ram AND a minimum 4Gb of dedicated vram, so the Series S is 4Gb short, at least. It's not an apples to apples comparison, but it gives us a good idea of why Larian is having issues with the S.

Let’s be honest, Baulders Gate 3 is NOT graphically straining the Xbox S in any fashion, and is more than capable of playing more challenging titles, this is a split screening compatibility issue, more down to the coding of the S console video driver outputs, than hardware architecture. C'mon, we're talking about a 1/100 issue with the Series S & Baldur's Gate 3. Jedi Survivor ran better on Series S than PC, Diablo 4 runs great on Series S, in Split screen co-op, in fact Rod Ferguson took a picture of himself playing on Series S on the release date of the game. Hogwarts runs great on Series S, etc. Gotham Knights didn't run well on any platform on release, that's not a series S issue. People don't remember that the Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 console ports came out a year after the PC versions. They had Split Screen co-op, 2 also had it so you could play online with 2 other friends while playing Solit Screen, just like Baldur's Gate 3. So Larian, who's an independent, mid size studio, who grew larger over the years of making BG3, have never had the resources for releasing on console the same time as PC. So them not having the resources to explicitly focus on making the Series S co-op work, which no one is arguing isn't more challenging, isn't some reason to abolish the Series S or forgo feature Parity with the Series X. It not coming day and date with the PlayStation version, was only a drawback to Larian fans (of which I'm one, but we were only a small portion of the console market,& i heve a ps5 & Series X) until Baldur's Gate 3 blew up on release, in terms of concurrent PC players, and amazing reviews in progress. If that hadn't happened, this wouldn't even be a major issue. It'd be like when Microsoft had a limited timed exclusive in The Medium, 5 people cared. As though i had it pre ordered on PS5, it didn't shoot up to #1 on the pre psn pre order charts until after the PC release, and fanfare the game received. 😮And if the Microsoft engineers, who are now working with Larian, figure the co-op out, it again becomes a non issue, and info Microsoft can just give to any developer having issues with the same problem. So yes, it sucks in this instance for Microsoft fans/users, but this isn't the norm, and shouldn't be treated as such. Nor is Yoshi Ps comments about the S specifically, and have been a thought of Devs for a long time. It's why big budget console exclusives are usually so much more polished than AAA cross platform games. Because you're making a game specific for one piece of hardware. It's why Everything from The Last of Us part 2, to Gears 5, besides the skill of the developers, take advantage of the hardware so much more, and look immaculate, and best in class, on release. All devs would rather work with 1 set of specs, so to reference the constraints of the Series S, with that statement, is just disingenuous.

For me, feature parity being the issue, I am willing to wait for my console’s version of the game to come out later or have feature parity patched in in a future update if it smooths out the process for others with the X. For me on a personal level, split screen is not a factor in game purchases as I only play games online or solo so I’ve no need for that feature. I realize I don’t represent everyone but if it makes things better to stagger releases and gives devs less headaches and bottlenecks then I’m all for waiting a while longer. I was already used to waiting on the One X for a long while before I was finally able to get the Series S. I think "bottleneck" consoles are important because they keep games from getting ahead of the economy, let's face it the gpu economy is way too expensive for the common casual gamer. And the common dev workaround of games being artistic instead of realistic makes the games age better graphically and typically leads to longer lifetime sales. Additionally being on as many platforms and/or a wider range of PC hardware as possible can lead to a lot more copies sold (Minecraft and Battlebit anyone?). Overall it is a blessing and a curse and it all depends on which POV your glass is half full for.

Feature parity between the X & S also hampers Microsoft / Xbox's own 1st party developers and games, not just 3rd party games. From the jump, everything Microsoft first-party makes or develops has to be made with the limitations of the S in mind, NOT taking advantage of the power of the X or building with that in mind (while Sony has no such limitations on current gen hardware: you develop for the PS5 and that's it). Put another way, it's like going out to play with your friends as a kid, but your parents (Microsoft) say A) "you've got to take your slower, weaker brother along with you" (Series S), and B) "you have to include your slower, weaker brother in the games you play with your friends" (who are all faster, stronger, and more coordinated). Anyone who grew up with siblings will know exactly what i'm talking about.

I own both a PS5 and Series X. And honestly kinda wish that Xbox would just rip the bandaid off and get rid of feature parity. If developers are being held back from that, then MS needs to realize that in order to further grow their brand they should remove it. As having games or good games is king in the construct that is the console wars. One solution I would recommend is for MS to further invest in the cloud and use the cloud processing power to bring the S to a higher level of quality. They were trying to show how that works with Crackdown 3. So why not further utilize that tech?

The fact that they were still coding the PC version close to launch (late review release), and that they said they haven't finished the PS5 version yet, tells me this is likely a red herring. They couldn't do simul-release, and wanted a public reason to delay XBox.

@@mandisaw exactly. They for sure weren’t about to drop on Xbox anyway during September due to Starfield. I think it’s an excuse to be able to not have to release so close to Starfield on Xbox. They don’t have to worry about it on PS5 since it won’t have Starfield. Their resources were spread very thin for BG3. Especially since they decided to develop for Macs too. Which is fine. Macs can game now and it’s nice to see really

@@TylerKhan Mac development is also a "Blue Ocean" strategy, like with Starfield - fewer games on Mac, so less competition. Plus Steam Deck is Linux under the hood - adds a lot more potential users to the "should we develop for Mac/Linux?" calculation. We always hear developers whine about how hard it is to make games that have slightly different hardware requirements. Sure, one platform might require more optimization, but that optimization would make the game better on all platforms if it had been included from the beginning. They've been doing this for decades on PC since every computer has different specs/hardware. It seems ludicrous that they could get this game working on Series X and not the very similar Series S. Cyberpunk 2077 had huge problems running on super powerful PCs. Was this because PCs are inherently inferior to consoles? Come on.

Release BG3 on the Xbox series X at launch and try to get it available for the series S ASAP. The 2 Xbox's are simular to having a weak gaming PC that can't run BG3 compared to a strong PC that can. If you don't or can't afford to buy top level gaming PC's or Consoles there is going to be some restrictions. No one should be surprised about that.

Series S is both a great and a terrible idea. It allowed Microsoft to sell their new console to people who couldn't afford a full price new nextgen console, and it continues to allow them to sell to people with severely constrained budgets. However it launched outdated tbh. It just doesn't have enough RAM especially. With PC already showing us that 8 GB of dedicated VRAM is getting to be too little, and anyone wanting to play modern games on PC want 16 GB of system memory or more, putting PC's total memory count as a minimum at 24 GB for modern title. In this light the piddly 10 GB total memory of which only 8 GB is accessible to games and have to be shared between game data and graphics data is just woeful. Even when we consider that consoles are easier to optimize for than PC we still hit a point where there is just too much of a performance gap to optimize it away. The Series S choice will make Microsoft a ton of money and make a lot of the poorest gamers happy, but it will be a weight around the neck of developers and gamers outside that segment for this entire console generation. I think late this generation MS either have to give up the feature parity thing or devs will start to avoid the XBOX ecosystem all together because they simply cannot publish on it with those constraints.
@HarryTurney

The Series X has 10GB of RAM that is shared between the GPU (VRAM) and the System, split between 8GB that runs at 224GB/s and 2GB that is 56GB/s. So say Baldur's Gate 3 needs 8 GB of as a MINIMUM of PC, that is just the system ram. The GPU then needs another 4GB ov VRAM (970 or RX 480) making it 12 in total which the xbox series s doesn't have.

Microsoft really done this to themselves in respect of sales of the series X. Most gamers want physical media but when you buy up all the big devs then release those games day one on gamepass for a small monthly fee. Then to add to that you release a much cheaper console that those games will work on for a much cheaper price. Then ontop of that you say those games should play more or less the same across both consoles why woukd you buy an X? Gamers love games so if they can get one console cheap and put the money saved towards a PS5 meaning from then on in they are covered for all major games releasing then thats what gamers will do!

This is why Starfield will only run at 30fps on consoles and was delayed by a year. They are focusing on making games playable on the series S and then it gets released as is on the series X. There should have been a expiration date on when this "feature parity" promise would expire. There is no officially supported split screen in Halo Infinite as promised for this exact reason, people have found a workaround sure but Microsoft have remained silent on this fact because they dare not patch it out or face the wraith of their limited player base. Consoles have been holding back PC ports for a majority of games for years and now Xbox owners are getting a taste of what we've been going through. Welcome!

Nintendo will only release one version of their main home console and will have a major install base. The switch sold amazingly and there's only one. The Xbox series s has to have the same features as an Xbox series x while using the same disc, storefront, UI, and be baked into the same download off a server. If you wanna release an Xbox series x game then you must develop for two consoles rather than one which is more work for less money in the long run.

Nintendo *does* have 2 consoles - "handheld" and "docked" mode on the Switch. And devs are required to meet feature parity between them, despite lower specs in handheld mode. But somehow the giant install base (3x PS5 & XBox S/X, combined) quiets the complaints.

@@jakethatdumbkid7516 Nah, Switch devs also have to figure for two spec-levels, and they just do it. I think the BG3 team couldn't work on both console versions at once, and they opted for PS5 for whatever reasons (larger market, no head-to-head competition at launch).
