Those warranty seals are illegal in the usa, and the major console manufacturers got their hands slapped for them last cycle. Glad to see they're gone. (I like the color coded screws too!) Hopefully spare parts will appear to complement the apparent repairability of the things not soldered in. Not quite as easy to clean the ventilation as the ps5 teardown, but still pretty nice! The silvery foam padding for the ports is also for emi shielding: is the "nicer" alternative to the more common "little metal fingers" approach of connecting the metal case to the grounded port housings. Curious if that case is stamped metal, or metalized plastic: looks like a pretty complicated/detailed shape. Love the removable ssd! Hope they are actually end user replaceable! The chip on the underside is most likely a GDDR6 chip, specifically the lower-speed 2 GB portion of it (I expect it to have 4 memory channels, which would match the expected 224 GB/s if they use 4x32 bit 14 Gbps chips - each of the channels has a 2 GB chip, except one of them that has an additional 2 GB chip that's hanging alone in that part of the address space, thus only giving 56 GB/s). I don't expect anyone to be able to gather anything significant from the drive, all content is likely to be encrypted and no plaintext would be visible outside of the CPU, just like in the One (@MVG you should definitely check out Tony Chen's presentation about Xbox One security!) I just hope it's possible to swap the drive like you can on the One, AFAIK you don't even need special tools now, just run the recovery from USB!

Yeah I've checked out the markings and it is a 16Gb (2GB) GDDR6 chip from Micron (MT61K512M32KPA-14). There are four other RAM chips around the SoC, so it all checks out. One 8GB pool on a 128-bit bus, and the other 2 GB on a 32-bit bus.

The purpose of the Master Chief logo on the power supply is not for aesthetics (how many people are actually tearing down their console?) The purpose is the same as Apple, they put their trademarks on everything so that it makes knock off parts (and thus liability from knock off parts) less of a problem for them because they can then be seized by customs for Trademark infringement which is just about the only thing you can get customs to seize cargo for.

But why master chief? Isn't the xbox logo better? I mean, the xbox logo as a mark of trademark makes more sense than a master chief logo.
@zingbanana4 жыл бұрын
it also seems the chief logo is directly adobe the power connector on the motherboard.
@Wasper2164 жыл бұрын
That’s correct. That’s why cheap Chinese spare parts either have the apple logo blacked out with a marker or on cover parts they just put black tape on the apple and iPhone logo, so that they, most of the time, still get through customs.
@lwvmobile4 жыл бұрын
Nintendo and Sega have both done the same with the boot rom on their old consoles/cartridges. They could sue companies for making bootleg cartridges because the GameBoy and Genesis would require the boot code with the logo baked into it. They go after trademark infringement because the bootleg or unauthorized carts would most likely contain that logo in its code.

Most of the springy stuff on the outer shell and the foamy stuff on the inside is mainly for EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility or Compliance), this ensures that the outer shell acts like a proper Faraday cage. That stuff is used to seal all the seams/gaps from EM point of view.

As an engineer, what strikes me in this design is the shear simplicity in the parts, its modularity, the small quantity of parts and usage of plastic, steel and cooper for the major parts. All of these help drive the cost downward and help improve repair-ability and recyclability. Try and compare this to a PS3 Launch version tear down (or the Xbox 360 launch version) and note the complexity of that machine and you would begin to understand why this design shown here is a beauty.

the fact it has an internal ssd (m.2 30mm it looks like) already makes me happy i picked this system for my 1080p gaming.. it means in the future, i could replace that with a 1 or 2tb ssd (depending on how ssd storage progresses) Edit: also they could easily increase storage size in the future for newer batches, to stay competitive.. i like it.
