That is a seriously cleverly designed bit of kit. Considering how everything these days seems to use clips and glue to achieve miniaturisation it’s extremely refreshing to see something so compact remain simple to repair.

@@carbonsx3 Exactly. I've been working in military and industrial electronics for about 30 years. That type of metal coated foam has been used in that type of electronics for even longer than that. It was only ever described to us as RF shielding, and nothing at all to do with sound dampening. Hell, the only moving part in the Xbox Series S is the fan anyway, and those foam pieces are nowhere near it. It is nice to see commercial electronics finally using it so extensively though.

MS makes dev mode available on Xbox, which removes the homebrewers from the group of potential hackers, and Xbox game pass removes a lot of the pirates, leaving only the people that want Linux who want the console to be hacked, so it's probably not an issue since I'd say MVG belongs to the homebrew/emulation group

Those warranty seals are illegal in the usa, and the major console manufacturers got their hands slapped for them last cycle. Glad to see they're gone. (I like the color coded screws too!) Hopefully spare parts will appear to complement the apparent repairability of the things not soldered in. Not quite as easy to clean the ventilation as the ps5 teardown, but still pretty nice! The silvery foam padding for the ports is also for emi shielding: is the "nicer" alternative to the more common "little metal fingers" approach of connecting the metal case to the grounded port housings. Curious if that case is stamped metal, or metalized plastic: looks like a pretty complicated/detailed shape. Love the removable ssd! Hope they are actually end user replaceable! Chip under cpu looks like Micron (Crucial) RAM. Great teardown, thanks!

Even right now games like ac valhalla are not able to run at 60 fps on xss meanwhile series x is doing that with 4k resolution. In my opinion, if your only argument for getting s and not x is that you don't have 4k , it's not worth it. I like series s and it has its uses but the difference between xss and xsx is really big. The chip on the underside is most likely a GDDR6 chip, specifically the lower-speed 2 GB portion of it (I expect it to have 4 memory channels, which would match the expected 224 GB/s if they use 4x32 bit 14 Gbps chips - each of the channels has a 2 GB chip, except one of them that has an additional 2 GB chip that's hanging alone in that part of the address space, thus only giving 56 GB/s). I don't expect anyone to be able to gather anything significant from the drive, all content is likely to be encrypted and no plaintext would be visible outside of the CPU, just like in the One (@MVG you should definitely check out Tony Chen's presentation about Xbox One security!) I just hope it's possible to swap the drive like you can on the One, AFAIK you don't even need special tools now, just run the recovery from USB!
@SteelSkin667
@SteelSkin667 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've checked out the markings and it is a 16Gb (2GB) GDDR6 chip from Micron (MT61K512M32KPA-14). There are four other RAM chips around the SoC, so it all checks out. One 8GB pool on a 128-bit bus, and the other 2 GB on a 32-bit bus.

@@ErKtheErK Not really the same. On Xbox One the CPU itself decrypted everything and verified all of the signatures, so it's not just like the Nintendo logo: all of the code and assets need to be encrypted and signed with Microsoft keys, which hopefully won't be cracked for decades. Look for the presentation I mentioned on my first comment, it goes quite in depth (and it's not reverse engineered, it's from the Xbox security team itself - they are so sure of their work they aren't even keeping details to themselves)

The purpose of the Master Chief logo on the power supply is not for aesthetics (how many people are actually tearing down their console?) The purpose is the same as Apple, they put their trademarks on everything so that it makes knock off parts (and thus liability from knock off parts) less of a problem for them because they can then be seized by customs for Trademark infringement which is just about the only thing you can get customs to seize cargo for.

Nintendo and Sega have both done the same with the boot rom on their old consoles/cartridges. They could sue companies for making bootleg cartridges because the GameBoy and Genesis would require the boot code with the logo baked into it. They go after trademark infringement because the bootleg or unauthorized carts would most likely contain that logo in its code.

As an engineer, what strikes me in this design is the shear simplicity in the parts, its modularity, the small quantity of parts and usage of plastic, steel and cooper for the major parts. All of these help drive the cost downward and help improve repair-ability and recyclability. Try and compare this to a PS3 Launch version tear down (or the Xbox 360 launch version) and note the complexity of that machine and you would begin to understand why this design shown here is a beauty.

The foam around the connectors and metal fingers on the outer case are EMI gaskets - Microsoft probably had issues passing EMI/EMC tests and needed to add them in order to keep the radiated emissions down. There's a lot of very high speed signals on that board. A designer usually won't add parts like that unless you have to; they're expensive and (relatively) labour intensive to install. I dont think microsoft has ever tied storage to their consoles, typically its a modified block to identify it as a supported drive. but since they partitioned a huge amount for their quick resume it wouldn't surprise me if instead of a block to modify its an entire custom partitioning type(but that can be easily fixed with cloning methods especially since its a name brand nvme drive not a in house microsoft chip design). I still dont think they would tie storage to the cpu keys (like their dvd drives and southbridge) as that would especially suck if the storage died. I dont think the debug headers will lead to anything microsoft had learned their lesson with the early 360's and yes we will porbably be able to dump firmware(like xbox one), but much like the xbox one, unless we manage to decrypt the firmware and gain access to cpu keys homebrew will not come to the series x and s.
